1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Does she stay or does she go?

May 17, 2015

    1. Not sure if this is the right place to post but I think this is a very common problem in this hobby. I bought a DZ Nyu (now discontinued) and I love her sculpt I really do BUT it does not suit the character I wanted her for. So now I am battling with myself over if I should sell her on or try and make a new character and risk me not bonding with her.

The main problem I am having is I am probably going to end up with 4-6 white skinned dolls not including the Nyu if turned into another character and for me I want to have quite a varied collection so 4-6 of one skin tone is enough for my collection.

So if I was to make a new character I would want her to be a different skin colour which would mean me dying her or I have heard people have used spray paint before. And because she is discontinued that makes me feel a bit uneasy plus there is the fact she would probably have a complete style change. I might try and give her a new face up and see if that changes how I feel.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Did you end up selling the doll/s on or reinventing them?

    2. Alllll the time! Of my current 19 dolls, 2 of them have been "reused". Both my Iplehouse Mars hybrid and Jie Doll Michel were bought to be characters I ended up scrapping, and using the dolls to shell two much more loved characters. In other cases.....not so much. Usually, once I've reused a sculpt 3-4 times, I no longer am interested, even if it is beautiful.

But in a funny twist, sometimes I rebuy dolls I've sold. Example: Obitsu Haruka. I bought my first as a practice head, named him Jasper, played with him for about a year and a half. At the same time, a friend was selling her modded Haruka 60cm boy, whom I had fallen in love with at the time, and I bought him too. So I had two Harukas, but sold them both, thinking I preferred MSD better. Later, after I changed my mind and preferred SD, I rebought a Haruka, this time on a 55cm boy body, but his storyline, and there for bond, fell through and I sold him to my other friend. I swore I was done with Obitsus, since I never bonded.....until I was looking to shell a beloved female character and found a 50cm Haruka on the MP at a great price who came with a beautiful wig and faceup suitable for the character. She'll arrive next week. XD

    3. A sure sign for me that it's time to sell a doll is when I look at a doll and all I see is $$$ signs.

    4. If I were in your situation and really loved the sculpt despite her not fitting for the character, I would try to come up with a new character for her. I wouldn't try to dye her and risk ruining her and her resale value since she is discontinued. A new faceup seems like an easy and fast way to try a new look and possibly a new character on her.

I already have more white BJDs than I ever planned for, but the vast majority of my BJD family is normal resin. So I am flexible in the ratios. I wouldn't object to having more tan or white, depending on the sculpts. I have one character I created in my head in 2005 that I have been trying to find a BJD for since at least 2008. I've bought at least NINE girl BJDs to be her, and still haven't found the perfect one. About half of the dolls I bought for her were changed into different characters successfully and easily, but I sold on the other half (usually because there was something physical about the doll that didn't work for me).

    5. This is the exact problem I've just been through with my Minifee Mirwen. She is a sculpt I wanted for the longest of time and so when I had the opportunity to get one I jumped to it directly. She got a personality and a concept, and all was well. But I never got around making her clothes. And she didn't even get a face up after five months. She spent more time in the drawer than out. Even so, this was the sculpt I wanted for so long, and I kept holding on to her, until I simply played with the thought of reshelling her in a bigger sculpt. To make her an SD-size instead since it would be so much easier to make her the clothes I had in mind and the style I wanted. Then it only took a couple of days before I had her sold and she was shipped out, and I've never felt more relieved to be honest. I've been having such a bad conscience about her never getting any time in the limelight, always being in her drawer, that when she was finally off my hands, I got the motivation back to do stuff for my other dolls and I made like four pieces of clothing and a pair of glasses and a wig in just a couple of days after she was gone. Just because I didn't have that nagging thought of "I should really be doing something with my Mirwen instead..." hanging over me.

I did also play with the thought of trying another concept or style for her, instead of the idea I originally started out with, but since I didn't have anything come to mind I sort of gave that up. I don't want to be making up characters and concepts because I have to. Especially since I have so many projects already started that need my attention.

Now, Minifees aren't limited in the same way that DZ Nyu is since she's discontinued, so it's a bit trickier since if you should happen to change your mind it would probably be much harder for you to find a new Nyu than for me to buy a new Minifee. The only advice I can give is the one a friend gave me - put her away for a couple of weeks or a month. Put all her stuff in her box and put the box in the closet, and if you during that time feel the sudden urge to do something with her or get a new concept - great! If not, then maybe it's time to part with her. There's really no reason to keep a doll just because you love the sculpt - I'm just as happy watching other people's Mirwens as I was having my own. Perhaps that would work for you as well :)

    6. I've been having the same problem with one of my boys that I got a couple months ago. I got him during his company's discontinue event so obviously he isn't available anymore. He was at an insanely good price and was a bit of an impulse. When I saw him in the brand I thought he looked perfect to be one of my doll's little brother. So I created a character for him and the character has become more vital to my story then I thought he was going to be. My problem is now that I love his character and I can't just remove him from my story, but I don't like the doll so much anymore, and I can't stand seeing him around.
Sorry if this didn't really help with your dilemma, but at least your not the only one who can't decide with selling or reshelling characters:P

    7. There are different shades of white skin if that helps. Even if you get four dolls in white skin, if they are not from the same company there is a chance thy are going to look like they have different skintones. My DZ boys are in white skin and they do not match my Loongsoul and Doll Family white skin dolls exactly (the Loongsoul is close but a little yellower). If you like her in the white skin keep her in white skin. Using dye can end badly and you can really ruin a doll. I would hold on to her as is and see how you feel.
