Doll Chateau-Too skinny?

Dec 21, 2014

    1. *I really hope this is the right forum/am allowed to post this!*

Okay, so when I was still looking at possible first dolls, I came across the beautiful K-Body-12 of DC. I instantly fell in love with the body scultping( I'm a sucker for well-sculpted hip-bones :D ) Now, I really want to order from DC while their event is still going on, because lately i found how much I love the K-01 body as well, and could possibly order both bodies together to qualify for the event. However, I have a few concerns over the K-12 body now:

1.I still live with my parents, and I'm a tad worried over what they'd say when they saw the doll, as it is SKINNY.

2.The doll is overall really thin and I worry it may look odd compared to my Loongsoul.

      Opinions?
(I'm putting these on layaway, with my own money, in case you were wondering ;) )

    2. Well for point No2, depends how picky you are, i have several different sizes and styles and they are all in my cabinet together, i like the variety and it doesn't bother me they don't "match" i don't even notice it, but some people want a uniform collection, i think that's boring and i would lose interest i think, but each to their own.

Obviously i don't know your parents but as a parent myself, the only reason i could see for concern is if my Daughter had ever had an eating disorder, apart from that what she does with her own money is not my concern, i don't think having a skinny doll is going to cause an eating disorder for instance as that is a psycological thing, at the end of the day i see these dolls as art. I'm actually receiving a DC Lydia for my Christmas present and i will happily display her with my Fairyland/Volks dolls etc.

    3. Each doll has it's characteristics, just like people. There are so many different body types so unless you are trying to have a community of one type of look (for example realistic looking dolls (Loongsoul pretty much falls here) or big eyed or anime), the character a doll 'shells'(represents) is up to you. It's your money but if your parents are concerned explain the doll's character, the fictional person or creature he is representing and that this particular doll(s) has the proper 'look'.

    4. Thanks! :) I do tend to go for realistic looking dolls, though more in the ways of facial structure/eyes/clothing, and DC is an acceptable look for me. I really don't have a character yet either, I think it would be easier to create most of the personality once I have the doll and am looking at it. I really appreciate the insight, by the way! :)

I agree! And congratulations on your Lydia!! I think it would be very boring to have multiples of the same bodies, and, for the most part, brands. No eating disorder here! My problem is that I'd been through all sorts of diets as a kid, and I don't know how to approach my parents with a photo of the doll, because I don't know what they might say. Many people would take one look at the body and assume it's "anorexic" which is really not fair. I think I will show them a photo and see. Thank you so much for your help!!

    5. I dont really think of Doll Chateau dolls as "too skinny" or "anorexic" looking. To me they are very stylized in the same way that different artists will draw different body types. Maybe if you showed them the broad range of body types available from DC it would help explain that the company (and your collection) represent many variations (which I would find healthy).

    6. I Didn't mean to say it like that! I honestly hate it when I see the ignorance people can have regarding eating disorders, and I was afraid my parents would say something about it regarding ed's. I think they are skinny in a good way, they are most definitley a refreshing look compared to standard dolls. They are incredibly gorgeous as well :D I also find your response very helpful. I think that's what I will do. I really love hearing others opinions on this, though I realized as I read them that I sounded a bit ignorant on the whole subject :doh Thank you!!!

I just wanted to add to my original post that i really love this doll, I like how skinny it is, I didn't mean to sound so, I don't know, lame :sweat I appreciate the help from everyone and have decided that I will show my parents the photos and see what happens next. Thank you!!

    7. They ARE very skinny compared to other dolls on the market, there is no denying it. But I think they are more art dolls, a sylized concept of a human being, than other BJDs on the market. Personally, I love them and I will only buy a BJD if it is very different from a doll I already have - which is why my collection will be very small and also include off-topic dolls. A very wide variety of styles and sculpts is fascinating to me.

    8. *v* I'm waiting on a DC boy myself! I wouldn't say they're too skinny, just more stylised like the above posters have said. Honestly though, they'll look fine when clothed. I've seen one of the kid bodies in real life wearing clothes and he looks great, not too skinny or anything!

    9. I agree with Fachtna that DCs are an art doll, which is why I love them myself. Although the doll's limbs look absolutely skinny to where I would say they must be quite fragile, but that is DC's charm. A very unique doll company, hope I could own one of them soon as well. :-)

    10. I agree again with them being stylized and yes they are very slim but as they are dolls I don't think it should matter too much as they are in essence sculptural pieces of work. Size wise compared to other dolls I own a DC Alberta whos front section is pretty much the same size as the K01 and I also a DC Barbara on the K07 body, at the same time as owning a Leeke Art Body girl and I love the difference between them!

    11. Oh no! I never thought you intended to say the dolls looked like they had an eating disorder. I meant that I believe the concern is logical to worry about your parents having this opinion. The dolls are indeed very skinny, but it's an artistic choice rather than depicting an "ideal body" or anything like that. I don't think you came off as ignorant ^^;. I hope it goes well and you love your new doll!

    12. If you see their dolls in real life it just looks, well, like a very slim doll (though I personally find their torso too slim without clothes on).
Comparing them to other companies is what often makes people feel uneasy, I guess, because compared to other dolls they really do look too skinny.
I'm currently waiting for my first DC MSD. But since my other dolls aren't as slim, I'm making this doll a non-human character to "excuse" his slim frame.

    13. I think dolls can be any size as they are dolls. I don't think they all have to have a realistic body shape as they are a thing not a person. I am getting a large dc boy and his crazy skinny long body is what attracted me in the first place. Ok my guy is not going to be human but that's beside the point. Bjds are pieces of art and if you look at paintings and sculptures anything goes.
Choose the doll because you love the way it looks or it suits a character you have in mind. If in the end you decide it doesn't suit you then at least you can sell the doll and often get a fair bit of your money back.

    14. I love the DC kid 01 body and bought two for my DiM happy heads. But I wasn't sure I liked how skinny their legs were. Even so, I was very happy with the bodies. Until I bought a Unoa and discovered that I actually preferred it's body to the DC body because I like the way the Unoa filled out the skinny jeans I was making. This was a total surprise to me!

I decided to sell my DC Bella and ordered a Dollzone b45-12 body for my DiM head. This body turned out to be my favorite. It falls inbetween the very thin DC leg and the heavier Unoa leg. Now I have all three bodies and I love and appreciate the variety though the Dollzone is still my favorite.

I think you should go for what you like over what your parents might think and consider all types of bodies since you will discover your favorites as you go along.

This is the same pair of jeans on my Unoa in the first picture and on my DC kid body in the second. I think my Unoa looks adorable in them while I'd need to take the jeans in a lot for the DC body. Even after doing that I don't think she'd be able to fill them out in the way I discovered that I like. But my DC kid body looks wonderful in skin tight thigh high stockings and lingerie.

    15. DC are meant to be too skinny. They are probably about as skinny as you can get and still have room for string to go through! They are meant to be stylized... not realistic... that way. So basically... it's up to the individual to decide if they like the look or not, and if they like the look compared to other dolls. Some people will, some people won't like it.

As far as stylized dolls go... DC probably aren't any odder than Pullips, with huge heads and eyes and tiny, skinny bodies... Again--they aren't meant to be realistic one bit!

Most parents may worry if there's a doll that looks like it is meant to be pretty much human, but is too skinny and a bad sort of role-model... but if you have other dolls that aren't ultra-skinny, and if you're old enough and wise enough not to model yourself on dolls, your parents shouldn't be that worried. Of course, they may be types who just don't like the look... but who knows what people like and don't like? As your parents, you probably know more than anyone else.

--And it probably would help if you didn't keep your ultra-skinny dolls lying about naked! DC look less like skeletons when they are clothed!

    16. I have the k11 body (i think? haha) and she fits in just fine with my other slim minis. When shes dressed her skinniness is less exaggerated, and she still looks in scale with them.

for no1 I'm not sure why your parents would have a problem with that? People come in all shapes and sizes. But if you think they would have a problem with it, I guess all you can do is talk to them and hear them out.

for no2 again, my DC girl fits in just fine with my other minis, although she's a lot taller, but most of my dolls are on the shorter side of the spectrum anyway.

    17. They are skinny in such an obviously "art" way, I think it's fine, even as the mom of a teen girl. The only problem I have with the skinniness is that I was told when I was thinking of buying one that the resin is so thing that it cracks and chips easily. I don't know how true that is, but it was from someone in the hobby much longer than me.

    18. I'm not particularly fond of Doll Chateau's "skinny" bodies, but I do find them beautiful. Their style is just not for me though. As for your family, I doubt they will have any problems with DC's dolls?

    19. I loveeee dc's skinny body's.
      it makes them so weird.
      and I love weird...
      That's all ! ^^

    20. Just for me, I find their bodies a bit too thin for human characters. But they are really amazing sculpts all the same and I appreciate their art. Doll Chateau is really a marvel that I've enjoyed since getting back into the doll hobby this year. (I have 1 head and 1 full doll on my secret wish list ;)).
