It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Doll Photography: What do you like to see?

Jul 6, 2014

    1. What do you prefer to see when it comes to photography of BJD's? Do you prefer the plain close-up portrait shot, seeing dolls in bizarre scenery and things, or maybe something out of the ordinary? Specific themes to the shot.

I'm curious as to what people prefer. :)

    2. I enjoy photos of dolls out in the environment doing things - mainly because I'm far too lazy to ever do anything like that myself, so I really appreciate the trouble some people go to :)

    3. I'm the same as elve - I think the most interesting shots are dolls out in a pretty environment; interacting with it is even better!
Even if it's just using an interesting texture as a background, some chopped logs or a stone wall as a background for a portrait shot really adds interest to the picture :)

    4. I love beautiful portraits that look like portraits of humans - depth of field and good lighting.
But I also like scenes that have lots of doll-scale objects to look at and wonder over.

    5. Dolls are playing various music instrument in an orchestra. That must be really amazing! :love But...only problem is, we need so many dolls.

    6. I prefer edited portrait photos. I love seeing all the features of the dolls face and their faceups. And eyes! The more depth and brightness the better! I also love pictures showing the characters story or personality, but mainly I focus on the face, hair and eyes. I need to take some of my bjds actually, instead of creeping on other people's here and on deviantArt.

    7. I really like looking at doll installations with many doll-scaled objects (agree with E-beth), with good light and nice photo quality. Close-up portraits with interesting face-ups and light would catch my attention as well. I rather enjoy the existence of an idea in the head of a photographer than any particular type of photos.

    8. I pretty much love doll photos in general, but there are a few things that I always find special...

Dolls outside interacting with our world, but bonus points for the creative people who make it look in-scale for the doll.
Close ups of beautiful faceups, I love seeing the delicate details in lips <3
Dolls with props! Ack I'm so jealous of the people who have managed to find lovely, quality in-scale props for their lovelies. Blows me away every time XD
And lastly, dolls interacting or posed together realistically. Some people manage this so well you can't help but smile when you see the personalities coming through from an image :)

    9. Dolls in water! :D

    10. I love seeing realistic dolls that can be mistaken for a human the most. I also enjoy portraits, BJD photographs in nature, and staging with doll-sized props :)

    11. I love to see photos which makes them appear to come to life. The only way I could describe is like in the film, "A Night at the Museum" where when the sun goes, down all the exhibits come to life in a fun, friendly way or like in the "Toy Story" films. Nothing dark or creepy. Just a scene which would provoke an emotional response.

It could be a YOSD sized doll playing with blocks or a boy and girl MSD holding hands whilst walking along the beach as the sun comes down. A scene which creates a response. If you take a photo at their eye level. I believe it can works really well.

I've found photos of dolls and toys in general where the angle of photo and distance where you are up and far (say at our eye level) makes them appear unemotional. Instead of capturing a scene, they just appear as they really are, static and cold. It doesn't create a response for me.

      But ...

It depends why you are photographing your doll. If it to show your new awesome faceup or outfit? Then you you might want them to appear static and not capture a scene but if you are saying wanting to be artistic, then a closeup at the dolls eye level with them in a scene might be an idea to try next time.

It just depends why you are taking a photograph and what you want to show. Anyways that's just my two cents.

    12. I agree with the photos of them looking as though they are alive. Personally i like photography of dolls with their owners, or having adventures with their owners like being real to not only the audience but the owner themselves.

    13. I love shots that put the dolls with in scale objects thus making them look life size. I like interesting settings and outdoor scenery. I also love good portraits and beautiful artistic black and white photography. I just love looking at doll photos:)

    14. I really like seeing the details of a doll, especially if it's with a company face up, so in case I'm ever interested in the sculpt, I know what to expect and at what quality.

Aside from that, I love seeing anything that makes the doll seem... alive? Whatever makes them look human (or non-human), whether it's their posing or their setting, etc. Something other than stoic sales-like pictures. I really like domestic settings, like dolls looking like they're just living their everyday life. It's cute. :)
