Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Doll-related Goals

Oct 9, 2012

    1. Hey guys! I've just put Angel of Dream's Primo (one of their 90cm guys) on my wishlist, but I've given myself a requirement- I have to lose 30 lbs. before I can order him. I've been wanting to lose some weight for health and personal reasons, but have had a hard time getting the motivation to do it- but I feel that if I force myself to wait until after I've lost the weight to get something I really want i.e. a doll in this case, I'll be more likely to actually accomplish my goal. So my question is, does anyone else do this?

Do you use dolls or doll-related items as personal rewards when you've accomplished something? If so, what would you like to accomplish and what's the reward?

I'd love to hear everyone's response to this! ^u^

    2. This sounds like my type of carrot to inspire a change for the better (like exercising or making an attempt at finding a job.) I think I'll have to give it a try :] Alright, if I manage to go down 35lbs AND manage to get in better shape I'll buy myself a doll i want~

    3. I used to only allow myself to buy dolls with money earned from a raise, promotion or from selling old junk or other collectibles. So I was motivating myself to work hard and clean house. :P But now that my financial situation is better, I just reward myself with a certain amount of doll money per paycheck. That encourages me to keep my job, and I raise the amount if I get a raise.

    4. sanachii- Those sound like some really good goals! That's part of the reason I wanted to share this, so it could give others ideas on how to make positive changes in their own lives. c:

CloakedSchemer- That's a really good idea, especially for those of us with jobs that we aren't exactly thrilled with!

    5. Well, I do tell myself things like "If you don't spend any money on video games this week, you can buy Shard a new wig/outfit." and things like that :|but that's more of a way of managing my spending than meeting any actual life goals.

    6. hmm, Sometimes try to do this with doll related goals. For example, sometimes I will not buy a new doll until after I have finished one I already have. (considering I have about 5 dolls that still need to be sanded and blushed while having another on layaway, I clearly have not taken this seriously thus far.)
I now have too many dolls, though, so I think I will do this a bit more seriously. In fact, last night I did an evaluation of all the clothes and shoes I have and am in the process of putting things up for sale. I've decided not to buy any new clothes and shoes until I have organized the ones I already have. (I'm not going to make myself wait until things sell, though  )

    7. louiselle- Very cool! I need to go through and try to sell some non-dolly-related stuff too. lol

    8. My goal is to prune my collection into dolls that have preconceived characters and not to buy dolls just because "they look cool". For me, that makes dressing them and doing their faceups so much easier. Now that I've read some other people's goals, I've decided that I won't buy the two bodies I need until I get an exercise routine of 4 days/week! :D

    9. I like the idea of using dolls as a reward for something like weight loss~ I've been trying to exercise more and this is a fabulous idea! Maybe put a certain amount of money aside each time you lose so many pounds and by the time you've lost your goal you'll have the money for the doll on hand!

    10. Syrill- I'm right there with you on limiting myself with getting dolls just because I like how they look. I've done that before and I wound up not bonding with them like I would have liked.

Boussole- Thank you! I'm really happy that people are gaining inspiration for their own goals through this! And I really like your spin on it too with setting aside money for pounds lost! :) I also think it would be a good idea to print out a picture of the doll you want to keep up your motivation.

    11. When I'm striving for a dolly goal and fighting temptation (whether it's lose weight, work harder, don't waste money, etc) I do this. Trying to eat better? Put the pic on the fridge. Trying to get through work? Put the pic on your desk/register/other visible spot to remind yourself "All this hard work is for him". Tempted to go get fast food or expensive coffee? tape a pic to your wallet. lol It works!!

    12. Back in 2009, I tried to do a similar thing in regards to learning to drive. I told myself I could only start making my boy Clairvius after I'd passed my driving test. Needless to say, he's been living with me for over two years... and I have yet to even book my first driving lesson. :sweat

I'm usually quite a determined person, so if I want something it'll usually happen regardless of whether I try to motivate myself with dolls. With learning to drive, I just plain didn't want to, and still don't, which is why it never happened. With me, dolls just tend to... accrete. It's not even a decided thing... they just come together regardless of my own plans! :D

    13. I've told myself many times that I can't buy another doll until I pay off my debt. Then another limited is released and I use that as an excuse. X_X

    14. Fin Raziel- I would probably do the same thing if I had a credit card. Darn those pretty limiteds and their short windows of availability!

    15. I do this too! Sometimes it takes a pretty big carrot to get this donkey to move forward. In the case of a doll being limited or soon discontinued, that is even more incentive; when, say, the goal is to get a job for more spending money. As long as you resist the urge to cheat!

    16. Havra- It does seem like resisting the urge to cheat is the hardest part of keeping dolly-goals! In my case I have some added accountability through my husband because I told him my plan.

    17. When I was in high school and before I had any dolls, my mom told me that if I got higher than 70% in math, she'd buy me an MSD and if I got over 80%, she'd buy me an SD. I didn't reach either goal, but she gave me enough money to buy an SD as a graduation gift anyway :)

    18. This idea of reward is really impressive. My problem is not tackling things I've needed to do. At this point I have 3 big projects that would make my life so much better but I keep putting them off and then I feel guilty. Now you've all inspired me to reward myself....I need shoes, wigs, and eyes. That my plan! I think the reward would make me feel better about spending the money (yeah right!).

    19. I don't own a doll just yet, and I know I'm a while off on that one, but I do have a set goal for my dolls. Scarecrow Hal is the first one on my wish list, I've loved him since I saw him about five or so years ago and that's not going to change. I'll only be getting him once I have a job and have my life settled. Generally I'll want to have a little "dolly savings" box for anything BJD related, but I want to ensure that if I need some extra money that would be money to dip into. It may take a while to get what I want, but I'm not used to achieving many goals to begin with and I want to make sure that as rocky as things are now, they're acceptably manageable when I really get to join the hobby so I can handle more tasks like buying clothes, eyes and wigs for my little loves.

    20. faeryfae- That sounds like a good plan! That's a big part of the reason I'm using a doll as my reward- I tend to get frustrated and lose motivation in the process of doing something, but if I have a reward to work for, then I'm more likely to do it.

Niryuu- That's completely understandable and really responsible IMO. It's definitely better to get your life settled first before dropping hundreds on a BJD- and at the same time, buying a BJD could be the end goal that you look toward to help in getting through your financial circumstances.
