Doll sculpts that are similar in appearance

Jan 29, 2010

    1. Sometimes I notice some doll sculpts that look alike to others; they may or may not be from the same company, but there is a definite likeness. This can be great if a certain doll doesn't meet the exact wants, though I don't mean dolls like Lusis and Sist, or the Fairyland dolls of various sizes.

Some sculpts that I think look similar:

      Unoa Lusis and Soulkid Mayu
      Unoa Lusis and Fairyland Chloe
Volks Suiseiseki and Volks MSD F-21
Volks Suigintou and Volks MSD F-22
Soom Sabik looks like Unidoll Berkut
      NDoll Luna and Volks Suigintou

      And now some questions:

-Which dolls do you think look like each other?

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

I'm curious to read the replies. :)

    2. I think there are too many for me to list! But, I will give it a go. A lot of these have been discussed in the picture request thread, but I guess I could post them here as well ^_^

-Which dolls do you think look like each other?

      Volks Nono and Mimi
      Volks Luna and Elena
      Volks Masha and Chris/Lucas
Volks SDC Renee and MSD f-21
      Volks Yori and SD16 Kira
I think my Unoa Lusis has a similar apperance to my F01 and Luna

There are so many Volks sculpts that look like brothers and sisters it is silly. I could probably reach outside of Volks, but I really do not know other companies molds as well so it is hard for me to make comparison.
There are a lot more I cannot think of off the top of my head...I am sure they will come to me later

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?

Yep, I end up wanting them both. Availability probably helps me decide which one I get at a certain point in time. But I try not to get a doll in place of another, that never works. I just go for what I really want and if I really want both, I try to get both.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?

I end of getting both probably, or at least own them both and decide I like one more and sell the other.

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

I do not try, but it ends up happening anyway lol.

    3. IH Ryan makes me think of CP Delf El and because I like El, I've noticed I'd like to get a Ryan too. XD The molds are definitely not the same, but they both have this look that I love. I guess it's the lips.

    4. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
      Volks SD Kurumi/Miruku, MSD F-18 and Yo-SD Lin/Shin.
      Volks SD Tae/Anais, MSD F-06.
Volks SD Kun, MSD Enn, and Toppi looks a bit like Kun around the cheeks and nose too. And Yo-SD Kun, clearly.
Volks SD Luna, MSD Mihmi have some similarities, as does Toppi & Mihmi.
      Volks SD F-01 (Megu/Sara/Kira/Nana), MSD F-07, Yo-SD four sisters.
Volks SD Nono and MSD Nagisa.

Lotssss of others when it comes to Volks. :sweat Volks is all I really know about, and they really try to make family resemblances between dolls, to encourage people to collect more - it works on me. :doh

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?
Ugh, yes. :( Like most people, I love Kurumi. But with her costing around $2,200+ when you can find her, she just wasn't worth that to me, I could get 3 MSD F-18s, 2 MSD F-18s and a Yo-SD Lin or 4 Yo-SD Lins for that. So I got an F-18 MSD girl instead and plan to get another soon for twins, then add on two Yo-SD Lins. :sweat So it's kind of going to be like having 4 smaller Kurumi's when I'm done with my collection.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?
Like mentioned above, I opt for the less expensive if I'll be just as happy with it. I personally like MSDs and Yo-SDs better than SDs because I'm a rather small person myself (bigger dolls are really hard for me to carry) and I don't have that much room for dolls. :sweat So the choice wasn't hard. If the SD, MSD and Yo-SD versions were all the exact same price I'd still probably go with MSD, the fact it was the cheapest way to get exactly what I wanted helped push along the decision though. ;)

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

Gawd yush! I just adore little family groups, it melts my heart~ :aheartbea

    5. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
A lot! When new sculpts come out, I always immediately consider which other sculpts they look related to. This is a terrible temptation for me, as I inevitably end up thinking "Wouldn't ___ and ___ and ___ be so perfect as siblings?" Fortunately, I've talked myself out of it so far, but for me there's always a certain appeal about having dolls that are sculpted by different artists, have a distinctly different touch, but still look like family members.

I seriously spend too much time musing on this, considering I don't actually plan to make my doll collection a "family" though I'm tempted because I have so many ideas. For example:

Any K-Doll sculpt + most MSDoll sculpts, especially the early ones + Crobidoll Yeon-ho + DollnDoll Yuha + DIM Danbi + DIM Lloyd

Volks F16 (and variations) + Crobidoll Lance + DollnDoll Lucian + Psyche Yeon + Everpurple Zion

Crobidoll Lance + LittleMonica Dyuke + Luts Bory can be the baby brother

      Littlemonica Yuria + Musedoll Ciel

And there are some where the styles are too different for them to fit together side by side as family (in my opinion) but they still each remind me of the other:

Volks Williams looks like Soom Namu

Napidoll Marcel looks like Volks Ken

Everpurple Iris looks like Unoa Lusis

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?
Maybe? Hard to tell whether it's because they look alike, or whether it's because my taste is really narrow. :sweat I own a K-Doll Kill_U 1st and plan to buy a Volks F16 next; Crobidoll Yeon-ho and Crobidoll Lance are on my list too, and part of it is because I think they have a bit of similarity to Kill_U and F16 respectively.

I like that variations in bjd sculpts are fairly subtle. Because of that, sometimes it is hard to choose. I know I waffled between Kill_U 1st and Yeon-ho at first - Kill_U 1st won out mainly by being limited edition, but still I may one day own both.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?
N/A I suppose. But often, I find myself thinking of this or that sculpt as an improvement on an older sculpt by a different company. For example, when I first saw Napidoll Marcel, my impression was that it was a better version of Volks Ken. Marcel captures the same overall look or feeling that I liked in Ken, but Marcel is sculpted in a style that suits me more. Both of these sculpts are still available though, and I'm not 100% intent on getting either.

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?
Yes and no. I'd rather not have all my dolls look like siblings and I try to suppress the ridiculously elaborate family plans I dream up, but at the same time I want there to be a visual link between all dolls in my collection. I want them to look like they came from the same world, at least, if not the same family.

    6. Bobobie / ResinSoul are known for making elf ear and human ear versions of many of their sculpts.

68cm girl Chun (human ear) / 68cm girl Lian (elf ear)

      And so on.

Now similarities between sculpts across companies would be more interesting to see. How similar are the Dollmore Dollpire sculpts to the Iple House EID girls for example? I dunno, but one of them looks similar to EID Luna in face shape at least (although the fangs are a major difference).

      Phil.

    7. When it comes to Volks the Lucai family all look very similar, which is a big draw as far as I'm concerned (love me some F-16/Lucas/Sch A/old F-28/Irvin/Masha, oh yes...) and I'm convinced that there's a really strong similarity between Liz and Hewitt too, though I've never seen two together in the same picture and it niggles at me so... and probably will until I do, I imagine!

Given that I have an example of most of the Lucai sculpts, I suppose I do have a collection that resembles one another to some extent, but I think it's more the fact that my own aesthetic is drawn to those sculpts rather than a deliberate decision to only buy similar-looking dolls.

    8. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?

Leekeworld Koji and Luts Junior Delf TERRA. I noticed this when I went around looking for a sculpt to represent my future Koji's little brother. TERRA totally looks like a younger Koji to me.

Leekeworld Mabel and Luts Kid Delf Bory. I didn't like the body on Mabel, but liked the one on Bory, so I got her instead.

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?

Not particularly. I think it's cute, but most of the time I'll go with the one that 'bothers me less' either body-wise, company-wise, or resin-wise.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?

If I liked the limited enough to want it, I'd want the limited. If there was absolutely no possible way for me to get it short of paying out thousands of dollars, I'd most likely not get it at all. Getting the doppelganger would only serve to remind me how much I want the limited.

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

Not really. If I have characters I want to shell from the same universe I'll opt for sculpts that work well together, but other than that I'll get whatever sculpts I fancy even if they don't look like they 'fit' together.

    9. I think that Iplehouse's Silvia and Souldoll's Chantal ver.1 look very similar.
I do want them both... ^_^"
I don't try to buy dolls that look alike, but I have found that I tend to choose them anyway. I'm just attracted to certain features.

    10. breakaway, el and lishe looks alike. i think mostly breakaway and lishe (lips)

    11. Soom Beryl, Dollstown Elysia and Dollstown Momo.
Unidoll Jace and Dollmore Mary Pearce.
      Iplehouse I and Elfdoll Soah/Sooah.

    12. Crobidoll Lance and Souldoll Hewer.
Iplehouse Ryushin and Luts Senior Delf Howl. (I'm hoping to get a howl later on to be my future Ryushin's descendant.)
Kid Delf Lime and Iplehouse JID Vito.

I don't try to form my collection of similar looking dolls - I just happened to fall for most of the iple YID boys. ...and their JID's.... and their EIDs.....

    13. Gee, I can answer this because I'm currently going through a crisis deciding which one I want. XD; Oh dear... I should be saving for a body for my poor floating head anyway...

-Which dolls do you think look like each other?

Leeke-D Chouette and Neo Angelregion Seio. Right? o-o

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?

      Yes, and I don't know yet. D8

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?

Therein lies the problem... I guess I might end up trying for both, yeah...

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

      No... I'm trying to vary. Problem is, I keep falling for the same types of dolls n___n;

    14. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
If any one can prove me wrong on this I'll be suprised, but Choice Louis and Choice Jerome from BlueFairy TinyFairy are pretty much identical. xD Maybe Jerome has a slightly wider eye? I just spent about five minutes flicking between the two and the only real difference appears to be the eye colour and wig. >_>

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?
Welllll, me myself, I'd just go for the cheaper one. ;) Because I'm stingy like that.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?
If the limited was priced ridiculously high, or if I wasn't 180% in love with it, I'd probably go for the similar one. 8'D

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

I don't think it'd be worth doing that unless they're family, they'd loose some of their 'identity' to most people who don't know them too well.

    15. B&G's Nailo and Luts Delf Yder, or Elf Yder. Face on, they really do, but from the side and other angles, no. I have a Yder and a elf Yder, and buying a Nailo, so we shall soon see!

    16. I think the Dream of Doll boys look a lot alike. They have similer lip and eye shape...

    17. Nothing specific, but there are a lot lot lot lot lot of dolls I think look like the Volks F-16. I mean, apart from other Volks dolls that look like the F-16 (Lucas and Chris, I think). I've never liked that head, but it was always really popular, so I guess other companies liked that look too.

I've seen a lot of other dolls that look really similar, just in a generic "look pretty boy doll give us your money" way. But again, nothing really specific. A lot of new little companies have very, uh ... derivative sculpts. Not copies, but very decidedly un-unique and ho-hum.

    18. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
Like many others here mentioned I notice dolls from the same company can at times look extremely similar, or dolls sculpted by the same person but may work for seperate companies can also look similar so I won't mention them as I think that's kind of a given and even expected. I was rather surprised though as a member was asking about Iplehouse Amy and Island Doll Amy and I realized when I looked them up that I too thought they looked remarkably similar.

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?

I may be torn between them, but given the way I collect dolls, in that I choose them to shell a specific character, I'd most likely end up just getting one as there wold be no need for me tohave two dolls for a single character. And I choose ultimately by which one I am drawn to the most, which one is the prettiest to me, simple as that.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?

As I answered previously, I wouldn't try to obtain both unless I had a second character that could fit well in the similar sculpt. I haven't been in this exact situation when it came to a limited doll, but I've decided on something similar between a rather pricey body for one of my floating heads and a second body that was equally a good resin match as well as about half the price. In the end however I am aiming for the more expensive body for although it will be a bit more difficult to get a hold of, I already know I wouldn't be happy settling for something I didn't 100% want.

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?

Despite the fact that I aim very reluctant to have 2 dolls from the same company, my answer to this is absolutely YES. My older sister cannot tell my big dolls from one another and I can even see myself that they share very similar features. However, as they are mine they all look as different as night as day, and it's their similar style in the way they have been sculpted that ties them all together for me. I admit this has made me somewhat leery about future dolls and how well they will mesh (such as Musedoll's Re-Che whom I adore), but I figure if a love for a doll can outlast over a year, he's probably worth it ;)

    19. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
Cause Volks was my first love I know a lot of molds are very similar if not identical that have already been named. But I do notice the MSD F-18 and Kurumi. I think Nono and the MSD F-01, Liz and Emma, a lot of the dolls that are in the same story arc tend to have a similar look to them.

-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?
Basically with look alikes whichever comes up first when I have the money ends up being the first I come across.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?
I would opt for the bigger release doll. The chances are they will come up more often on the marketplace than the smaller edition. While I want to be greedy and have both, I'll settle for one and consider myself lucky. I have nothing against say getting my MSD f-18 and a Kurumi nor an Emma and a Liz. I be happy having a doll as a doll and having what I had seen as my only option and my dream side by side :)

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?
Nope. At least not intentally anyway. I go towards dolls with large eyes so they look similar in that sense but that's about it.

    20. -Which dolls do you think look like each other?
I can't tell the Volks sculpts apart with a very few exceptions- Same for the LUTS Delf face sculpts. Several other companies also do this for me. They all blur together.
-If there is a doll you like that has a look alike, do you end up wanting that one too? How would you choose between them?
In the end I like one more than another.

-If there is a limited/hard to obtain doll that you really like, but a similar sculpt exists, which one do you opt for? Or you you end up trying for both?
Never had this problem. I like the same things in my Leeke Romeo that I like about the Saint, but in the end I find I enjoy Romeo more because he's less perfected and pretty, with more character.

-Do you try to form your collection into dolls that look similar to one another?
That would utterly bore me. I go for realistic sculpts in general but I do want them to look very different.
