Dolls Damaged During Meets?

Aug 1, 2014

    1. I've recently become aware if Doll Cons and meets in my area and at first I thought, "Oh! How fun!" but then I read about dolls that were damaged at those kinds of meets. One person said their doll's hands were even off. Now I'm definitely concerned and apprehensive about bringing my girl anywhere... Does that sort of thing happen all the time? Or was it just someone being careless, you think? Have you ever had a doll damaged? Or even stolen?

    2. I've seen dolls damaged during meetups, fingers or ear-tips broken or noses chipped. BUT--I've been to 10 years of meetups and that's only 2 or 3 times. AND many more dolls are damaged in falls or accidents at home.

Just be careful, whether at a meet or not. Use stands. Don't put a doll where it can easily be knocked over by anyone or a pet. Normal doll care, really...

    3. Hm... Alright... maybe I can muster the courage after all, then... thank you for your input :)

    4. We had a mishap at a recent meetup where one of our members had her doll's head violently launched off (vinyl Dollfie Dream head thankgoodness). But it turns out it was not really anyone at the meet's fault, just due to the doll body + head having some issues that she didn't know about beore hand.
Since I was the host I felt really bad as I could see she was visibly upset... :sweat
But these things happen and it was fixed so no hard feelings.

Also, if you feel uncomfortable with other people touching your doll, just tell people at the meet up front that you are uncomfortable. Better to explain it up front so no feelings are hurt in the end. :) Doll people are usually wise enough to be careful with other people's dolls.

    5. I almost had one of mine broken during a convention contest because one of the contest people decided that the display wasn't even and then proceeded to take down everyone's displays. Luckily I turned around in time to catch mine before her face hit the table. One of the reasons why I'm not social with my dolls anymore. People just can't seem to be gentle with anything.

    6. At one of my earliest meets we had a doll actually somersault off a table and land face-first on the floor, rather hard.

That stubborn bastard wasn't even dented. XD

I agree that basic doll etiquette will generally solve most problems at meetups. Take care with your belongings and the belongings of others, and the risk will be minimized.

    7. In my opinion I think as long as you keep your doll/s in sight and close range everything will be alright.I'd say like many people have said before , don't overwhealm yourself by bringing more dolls than you can closely keep track of and you should be fine :) I wish you all the best !

    8. My own girl, who is not yet sueded or wired (I know, I know...I'll get to it eventually) was standing on a concrete curb, and as I am setting up my camera, a gentle breeze blows, and down she goes, headed for a faceplant in the dirt. Had it not been for Panbow and her cat-like reflexes, who caught my girl an inch from the ground, I probably would have cried. :sweat

Another girl at the meet sadly wasn't so lucky. Her girl wasn't steady either and fell face first onto the cobblestone road. Thankfully she was not damaged in the slightest! I'll tell you though, our hearts nearly stopped as we saw it happen in that slow-motion vision you get during horrifying situations lol

    9. @ourtangledbones Aaah that other one falling on her face was horrifying! x-x I had forgotten about catching Molly, I'm glad she was okay too! (And I'm not stalking you by the way...! xD; We seem to end up in the same threads a lot though)

At the last meet I was at someone's doll ended up with a broken finger somehow (I think that happened when it was in the bag though, on the way there), and earlier this year a girl's tiny dove off a table and ended up losing his LUTS headplate thingy... otherwise he was okay though.

If you just pack them carefully, and make sure when you put them out for display they are either sitting or leaning on something, and away from the table edge, you should be okay.

    10. Thank you all for telling me about your experiences - both good and bad :) It does ease my mind, though I think I'll end up leaving Tasha home tomorrow (I don't have a bag for her and it's an anime con - not just for dollies). And if I do bring her to any future events, I'll be sure to be super careful! Even though she's hit the floor before and hasn't chipped at all... She's a tough cookie! Lol

    11. I've never had any problems during meets, but i have had a doll fall down onto concrete and manage little more damage than a scrap on her faceup, which was easily removed!! The cool thing about meets is that if a doll does tip over most of the people in the room are very capable and quick enough to catch it. Especially because we're talking about people with dolls!!

I've even had the pleasure of restringing someones doll for them. the key is asking kindly not to handle your dolls without your permission!

    12. There was once a Doll-valanche at a meet I went to. Three SD's, two MSD's and my tinies all went collapsing. My Yo-SD girl fell off the table...ANd landed right on someone's duffle bag face up. My tiny not so lucky...She hit the table right on her freckled face.

    13. I didn't go to a meet. My colleagues wanted to see my doll so I brought someone along. They were all really polite and looked but did not touch. However, my boss told me to show it to her friend and I did. She was very interested in him and kept handling him but that was okay with me. Up to the point where she forcefully removed a ring from his finger and broke it. The thing was kinda expensive. That was the point when I packed him up and left. I did kinda expect things to break and even more so when it's around people who didn't know about how delicate some of the props were. I just didn't expect her to handle him that roughly. And I couldn't even tell her off coz my boss was there. I just grit my teeth and told her it was okay.

    14. I've seen dolls fall, usually while trying to get difficult photo shoots or one falling and taking others down, but never intentional harm done to a doll, and in most cases, none were harmed.

    15. That's so rude! I hope you were able to replace the ring... :(

    16. The worst that ever happened to me was actually to an outfit. Seems the age of the coat (near 7 years) and the heat of being in the trunk on the long drive was enough to make the front of the pleather material separate from the backing. So sad... but I am in the process of getting the coat re-made.

I have had worse happen when doing photoshoots on my own. (Face plant onto solid rock... thankfully it was a minor injury that was able to be sanded and recoated and her faceup was not damaged. :)

    17. All the meet ups I'm at I make sure my dolls are sitting just in case something happened. Nothing has ever happened at the meet ups I've been at (only 2).

    18. I've gone to some doll meets and I haven't seen any dolls get damaged yet, although personally as a rule I generally do not touch other owner's dolls. I just take pictures of them. LoL

If I want to see them in a different angle I'll ask the owner if they dont mind moving them so I can see the rest of it. I dont know what I'd do if i was the cause of damage to someone else's doll. Lol

    19. I was so careful with other peoples dolls during meets. At AWA the tables are so close together I'm terrified of bumping a table behind me and knocking over someone's doll so I walked extra slow. I never saw a doll get bumped but everyone seemed to keep their dolls in a sitting or lying down position to avoid that I guess.

I think the only chipped or broken dolls I've ever saw at a meet were the ones that people were selling.

    20. Once at a meet, a bunch of Dollshe owners stood their guys up on a café table, which was definitely not their brightest moment. Dolls fell, fingers broke, everyone learned a lesson. Pretty much all the damage I have seen happen is from temporary lapses in judgment because people are so excited about dolls!
