Dolls Like People You Know

Nov 15, 2014

    1. If this has been done before feel free to delete/move it!
Just curious; have any of you based a doll of of someone you know in really life? (significant other, friend, family member, even yourself) Did they find out? How did they react? Or if you haven't done this, what is your opinion on it? Do you think it's creepy?
I love threads with stories so hopefully this will be fun!

    2. What a great topic! I am actually basing a character on my boyfriend. Although not in the way most people would think. I don't collect boy dolls so she will be a woman. Based off his zodiac sign and having his personality and characteristics. So while she won't look like him, for me she will have his "essence". She will be partnered with a character based on myself. Only also not looking like me whatsoever.

    3. It's not something I can really see myself doing intentionally. Maybe if it was for a particular shoot with the person? That's the only situation I can really see.

I don't think I'd have a problem with it unless you were some creepy stalker modeling a doll after your obsession or something crazy like that.

But modeling one after your significant other, yourself, or a family member seems fine if that's what you are into.

    4. I wouldn't personally do it because I'm pretty sure it would make said person uncomfortable. I think it might set expectations or that (general) you could eventually get an unrealistic idea of what the person should look like etc.

I think I'd feel less weird about it if it was maybe in memory of a person? The person might still be romanticized but people do that for many other things so I think it would be less weird.

    5. While I've not based a doll off anyone I know, I have found several sculpts that kinda look like some of my friends (for example my housemate looks like an Iplehouse Claude) while my fiance resembles the Ringdoll grown body type because he's quite lanky like they are.

    6. Xavier doesn't look a little like his muse, he looks a lot like his muse... But then again muse inspired the character in the story and I wanted a doll of Xavier. Where they differ is personality and I see Xavier as the character I created and treat him that way. It's the fine line between fan art and creepy fan art, some people are flattered and others want to kill any and all dolls with fire.

    7. At some point I would like to put together a yosd or smaller to look like my son when he was a little boy. I wouldn't tell my son that though, as he's a big hairy teenager who doesn't like being reminded that he was once a little cutie! I've always got my eye out for the perfect sculpt.

    8. Yes, I have.

Mostly, it's just naming a doll after a friend, or giving them random traits as a friend or family member, like similar interests, same birthdate, same favorite food, maybe same eye or hair color, but not a copy at all. Just a few little things that probably aren't even that noticeable.

However, I do have one, Indy, who looks very very much like a friend of mine. This guy is very attractive, and the sculpt looks like a minimee of him (though it is not, he's a standard Soom Lazule!) I haven't told this friend because he's mentioned before that it's "weird" that my other doll looks like our other friend (he does not, in any form, that I can see aside from being a young adult male), and we don't really hang out anyway, just talk when we do run into each other, so it would be extra weird during one of those random encounters to just toss out "Oh, btw, I made a doll to look like you." The doll does look quite a bit like him, but he's not meant to be exactly like him. The character is different, age and birthday are different, life story is different and they don't share the same name or anything. I'm not trying to use Indy as voodoo or a substitute for the real guy or anything weird or obsessive like that. Mostly it was just...."this guy is attractive, this sculpt turned out looking like him, so why not?"

    9. That makes sense. I think if I were to associate a doll with someone, it would be like that, only similar in looks.

    10. When I was just looking through dolls random sites, I saw a doll that looked exactly like one of my friends. It was a Dragon Doll Cheng. He looks identical to the guy I know; Same hair, eyes, facial expression, and even the shape of the face.

I think dolls that look like others would be fine but I'm not into that. I think it's really cool that other people can do that. I don't think it's creepy at all unless the said person has an unhealthy obsession with the person the doll is modeled after.

    11. I fell in love with my doll's mold because it reminded me of a sweet little girl from my church. I dont consider the doll that I brought home to be that exact person, but she definitely influenced my doll's "personality." I see nothing weird with basing a doll off of someone from real life, as long as you keep the doll separate from the person in your head. Or that you keep it limited to that person's style/aesthetics, but maybe give the doll a different name/personality. But yeah, it's kind of hard for me NOT to let IRL people influence my doll's style! But I don't think of them as those dolls. :)

    12. Some of my dolls' characters (and subsequently the sculpts I chose for them) are based on people I know...but they're more like an amalgamation of different traits from different people so they're not really exactly like any single person I know. I find I do draw a lot of inspiration for their clothing styles from individual people I see in my life though.

    13. I haven't done this, but a long-distance friend of mine literally looks like Iplehouse's Bianca (actually, depending on makeup/angle/lighting/etc., she looks somewhere between Bianca and Soom Dia, but basically she looks like a doll and is gorgeous). A part of me feels like it would be kind of creepy to base a doll on her, as I've never planned to do so for any real people I know, and it's a weird subject to bring up to a non-doll friend.

(well, she's not a BJD collector, but she's familiar with some of the history side of ball jointed dolls, though more old German dolls than the Asian BJDs. So she might think the idea neat, but I'd feel weird having a mini-her in my home, as pretty as it would be... The resemblance did have me looking more than twice at The Addiction Bianca, though)

    14. I haven't gone out of my way to make a doll look like someone I know, but I have realised just recently that one of my dolls bears quite a resemblance to one of my work colleagues! Weird :P

    15. I have a doll I made to look just like me. My doctor suggested it as a way to force me to "take care of myself". It does look exactly like me, or as close as a doll can get, and it freaked out a few people close to me at first. I dress it in sweaters with inspirational quotes. ^^;;

It is not an idealized me. She blushed with all my scars and imperfections. she even has my dark circles, and dead fish stare. I had to hybrid her to be fatter than the rest of my collection. Most forum people I meet don't know it's a "me doll" since I don't advertise it too much. some say she's really cute and others don't like her or want me to fix something on her. which is kind of like real life.

I was going to make a doll that looked like my boyfriend back when we were going to get married. But we broke up...so now that idea probably won't happen. haha :/

I do consider the doll to be part of me, or an extension. If that's creepy then I guess I'm fine with that. Hell maybe when I die I'll have in my will that she be modded to hold my ashes or something cryptic like that. Go full creepy.

    16. Well, this isn't exactly the same thing but one of my friends looks exactly like a dollshe Venitu :D And I would totally want him in doll form. But, Im sure he would be very confused if he ever found out :XD:

    17. I have a similar "problem": Impldoll Sally's face is so familiar to me, it's like on the tip of my tongue and if I'd have the time or money at hand right now, I'd so love to get a blank head, make a boy out of her (yes, the one thing I'm rather sure of) and see who it was she reminded me of.

    18. I started joking to my boyfriend that I was going to make a doll of him and that he would have all of his clothes, accessories etc. but the more I say it, the more I actually want to. And after a little bit of searching I found that he looks a lot like a Dollshe Grant. I'm not so worried that he would think it was weird, because he knows that it's an innocent gesture, but if his friends ever found out, they would definitely think I was a weirdo. So I haven't created a mini boyfriend, but I definitely have the itch to! :sweat
