dolls verses character personalities?

Jun 4, 2014

    1. Do your dolls seem to exhibit the same personalities as the characters their based off of, if so do you think it's more you just wanting to see that character in the doll so much that you do, or the doll actually effecting the way you see that character?

I thought this up because I had a bit of a doll accident today T^T I was in a rush so I tossed some stuff in the same bag with my dolls, everything was fine until the bag feel and a glass jar I had tossed in the bag broke, oddly though the doll that was closest to the glass when I put it in the bag wasn't damaged at all just a little dirty from the contents. But my other doll now need some sanding as the glass cut into his chest.

However the point being here is that the damaged doll is my sd based on a character who would defiantly do anything to protect a child and my other doll happens to be my Yosd child character... coincidence? or more? no idea but it made me think of that question.

    2. Interesting. Who knows but it is thought provoking.

    3. My first doll has the personality that I planned for him before I ordered him but having him here also helped build up his personality even more.

I'm not sure if this makes sense.

    4. Haha, sometimes dolls do seem to fit their character. One of my dolls is a bit of a Casanova character-wise, and he somehow always ends up with his hands on other dolls if we put them together. Little David Cop-a-feel...

    5. Well I think that even though you may have a personality that you want for the doll, they already have a personality of their own... Personalities that may or may not fit the one you see for them. I only say this because looking through all the company photos of my first boy, Apollo, I thought he would fit in as my 'regal aristocrat/prince charming'.... That was not in the cards apparently.. Seeing as he turned out to be a picky, narcissistic boy prince with a 'higher then thou' personality...

    6. I thought about having my first doll to have a personality that was quite timid. But, when I got him I was trying out some poses to see how well he poses and things, and just the way he was sitting... He didn't fit the personality I'd previously thought. Ryul reminds me a bit like Yuuya Kizami from Corpse Party, a bit of an 'in your face, don't mess with me' nature. Odd, but still. *_*

    7. Oh my RachaelGrohl - you just made me realize that although I have pre-planned a couple personalities for some dolls I want, and the doll I want most is based off an existing character of mine, it may actually not feel right when I get the doll. :O I can't decide if that would be terrible or completely ok. *_*

    8. I'm not always making specific character designs when planning a doll. I mostly plan the whole installation. And when I change the installation I may change the present design. I think it sometimes leads to some character changes but I think I enjoy it. Once I decided to represent one of my characters but I just took the name and some facts which made the doll different anyway. And now I have 'just Chuu' (character) and 'my Chuu' (doll) to tell them from each other when talking to people. They are both 'my' though.

    9. That is a very interesting story that happend to you. Fascinating^^.

My dolls are mostly based on pre-existing characters, but are all OoC. I try not to define their character from the start, because in the end, they will be doing whatever they want.
My little Loki was a very sweet boy, without an idea behind him. Well now he is still very sweet, in his own mischeviouse-agressive way, with to much sass and a lot of character. What happend???? I don't really know.
Do they behave like the characters they show me, yes.
How much of it is unconciouse projection and how much anything else is a mystery to me, that I'm not interested in solving.

    10. I think it can be a bit of a projection from our own view of them, though I might ascribe some of that to a few of mine. One wasn't cooperating for posing at all for quite a while. He'd fail to take poses, became suddenly fussy to stand, just a real pain. And the headless body I got for his boyfriend (reshelled the head) never stood at all, in spite of being from a company known for their engineering. Then I got the new head, and suddenly both of them are posing beautifully! Could be a coincidence, could be a projection of my own frustrations over them not looking "right" until now, who really knows?

There's no doubt that the girl whose character wanted to date one of the boys looks grumpy, though, but that's more a consequence of her sculpt not "cheering up" as much as I'd hoped when faceupped. It's more a bit funny to me at this point, and she'll get shifted around a bit in the future to fix that.

I've encountered a couple of other "concidence" things along the way, too. A physically weak character's doll wouldn't stand for me at all until about a year or two after I'd purchased him (his younger version stands, but not as well as others with the same body type). Another looked "haughty" to me until I finally named him. Just little things like that, no damages or anything, but a few fun little coincidences.

    11. This is actually an interesting question, especially for those whose dolls are shells of existing characters (er if I'm understanding the topic correctly).

I really love the sculpt l picked for Cissy, I think it looks a lot like her, but... it's missing a little of her personality, I think? Doll Cissy is way cuter (in looks and demeanor) than Actual Cissy... I guess I'm okay with this; I figured before I got her that this would be the case, but sometimes I wonder if a different sculpt or just a whole different approach on my part might help. I feel like she is almost a different entity all together.

    12. My new dollmore boy is very foppish because of how loosely he is strung. His character is very rigid and serious so it sounds like I will be tightening him soon.

    13. dreedree - I guess it could be a cool thing! But could be a bit annoying if you're absolutely wanting that doll to fit your pre-assumed personality. ><

    14. My dollmore boy is doing the opposite right now. He naturally poses in very effeminate positions. His character is stiff and proper and would never tolerate looking as silly as he does.

    15. My dolls have their own personality and I can't even change them at all. I don't know why but just seeing my dolls, they give me a vibe to tell me which kind of personality they have. I always want to plan and even write down their background plus "personality" but when they really arrive, I have to change all my plan because they just aren't like what I plan for. :D

    16. Well, the sculpt that I bought for my doll is based off of not only my character's looks, but current personality as well. I specifically wanted a doll that wasn't smiling nor frowning because she's gone through a lot. So although she's content, she's not necessarily happy-go-lucky. I guess in this sense, you could say that my doll exhibits her current personality ^ ^

    17. I cannot say I've ever tried to shell a personality. I've bought a sculpt that looked cute and shy on owners' pictures and ended up with a tomboy, with sharp features, more cued-up than her brother. She was meant to be the younger one, she ends up being slightly older than him by a few months. I haven't finished her face up so there Is a slight chance that her personality changes again, thought I really like her as a tomboy :D .
