Dolls VS Characters

Oct 11, 2013

    1. How do you divide it, do you have more dolls than characters or vice versa?

I'm planning to end up with three dolls each of my Tanya and Kantagon characters, the first pair are hand made, the others will be Soom Mini and Super Gems. I will have two versions of Kiyara and Serendipity, but both sets will be handmade (It was just going to be one pair, but my first versions are too small for the MSD scale I want for the rest of my dolls). Misander who will more or less remain the same character and will hopefully be the first doll I actually buy.

I'm really excited for the Iplehouse Leona and Boris dolls I want to get next year because they will routinely change characters. Tasha's will include my OCs Jaqulienne "Jack" Hunt, Natascha Jenkov, and Firalina, as well as cosplay of Natalia Romanova, The Black Widow of Marvel comics and likely other female superheroines as cases may suit. My male Iplehouse will vary between OCs Dee and Lawrence Jenkov, his cosplays will include Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier, Bucky's Captain America costume, Sephiroth, Vincent Valentine and Vampire Hunter D.

I know I'll end up with more than just those dolls though, I want two or three child dolls to dress up and match with the various adult dolls, and I know I'll want at least one doll to be my OC Sam Hunter as well as Steve Rogers' Captain America, but I haven't even started looking for a sculpt for him. I'm also considering making Superboy and Miss Martian dolls, and I may end up finding or making a few buff ladies to do additional superwomen and OCs.

I expect it'll take me about a decade to get all the dolls I want for my collection fine tuned, and I know some characters might take over sculpts, or new characters will jump out and etc, but surprises and unexpected opportunities are what this hobby is all about. Especially depending on how my own doll line develops.

    2. Oh I definitely have more characters that I do dolls. I have over 50 characters and 4 dolls, there's like no way I will be able to afford a doll for every character. It would take forever! *_* However, I do plan on making a decent amount of them into dolls, but sometimes new characters just keep coming.

    3. My favorite aspect of writing is coming up with characters and names, so I definitely have way more characters. I have 4 dolls and too many characters to count, so I could never make them all. I just pick the OCs that are most important to me and I shell them. All of my shelled tinies are part of the same story & my big girl is part of a different story. I'm careful about the characters I shell because I don't want them to just be disposable. Fable, for example, represents a little girl who is fighting cancer with a smile. She's probably the most important character I've ever had and was difficult to shell because she just had a certain look. A lot of people find child dolls to be kind of... transparent? Like they don't have a lot of depth. But Fable goes through a ton of things throughout her story and she just represents hope and a light at the end of the tunnel and that inspired me to make a doll out of her to use as a physical representation of that hope. Nori is a girl I've been wanting to shell for over a year now. Her character just keeps coming back, with different names and tiny personality shifts but always recognizable as who she originally was. I won't go into detail about her, but she just kind of shelled herself. Like I saw a sculpt and it basically screamed "It's me, Nori, bring me home!" So I did. :)
I don't really have an exact plan of who will be shelled because everyday I have a new OC fighting for a spot on the dolly shelf. In this hobby, I've learned that you kind of have to go with the flow and accept that the direction that your collection goes has the ability to change at any moment. So I'm just letting it go where it goes.

    4. Yeah, it can definitely be a challenge to decide which characters deserve their own dolls. For me it's fairly easy to decide based on who I use the most. Outside of the stories I'm writing, I do a lot of RP with friends, and a few of my characters are more malleable and adaptable, and the more I use them, the better I understand them, and the more I like them.

    5. I've written a series of books (7, 8 if you count The One That Shall Not Be Thought of Ever Again, Please). It takes place in my own made up world. I have 2 BJDs.

      So yeah.

MANYMANY more characters than dolls lol

I like your idea of changing characters on one doll!

    6. I have way more characters than dolls, but most of my dolls are / will be pulling double duty in two stories. :)

    7. I'm a writer and a roleplayer too, so I have in mind so much characters that I'll be really difficult to ever see them all "dollified" XD Lot of them are so strange that shell them will be really difficult, especially if I will continue to mantain my purpose to remain in MSD size. So, somewhat like Laynieloo's experience, I wait to see a doll that screams "I'm (character name here), take me home!"
That happened with the Catish Reaa I'm currently waiting for, I saw her photos and immediately thought about Dahlia, my anthro-steampunk character... I must have her!
But I also have a lot of dolls that are "dolls", took them because they're pretty an fun to dress and not to be a specific character, and that's the case of my Dikadoll Mian Mian... he even still lack a name, I cannot think one better for him than his sculpt's one...

    8. I'll be in the minority and say I have more dolls than characters. Since I've long since quit role playing or writing, my "OC"s don't really exist to me anymore, except maybe one or two. Now, my dolls come first and then their characters.

    9. There are wayyyy more characters living in my head than I could ever recreate as dolls, for financial reasons, space reasons and aesthetic reasons. I'm a writer (not professional) and I've been creating characters and stories ever since I was a child. I'm always creating new stories and new characters. So, the answer to the question is that I have many more characters than dolls.

Each one of the dolls I do have only represent one character each. I don't use one doll to represent multiple characters, nor do I "change" the characters of my dolls. For all intents and purposes, the doll is the character, or the avatar of the character at least. My current dolls are all from the same story, which is a soft SF story set in the modern day. One of my new dolls that I'm currently waiting for is actually part of a different story line, in which he is the protagonist. Eventually I want to get a doll to represent his lover and their child.

    10. I definitely have more characters than dolls. Mostly because I have a LOT of minor or NPC characters that aren't important enough to shell, as well a few a characters that I can't find a doll that works for them. (Wrong body types, wrong skin tones, wrong face sculpts, wrong heights, etc) Of my characters, only a few have more than one doll for them. Amir has SD and MSD form, Loki and Hansel have SD forms and MSD heads, all because I upgraded and couldn't part with their original sculpts. Zack has a YoSD and SD form because the SD head was a limited event head and I wanted to grab it while I had the chance, even though I won't use it for years (my characters grow in real time, so no rushing him to adulthood).

I don't change the characters of my dolls, unless it's a permanent change (Like if I want to scrap a character, but still like the doll and want to reuse it).

    11. I'm an illustrator/writer of my own comic, and I once made a list of the characters in my storyline, and it was over 80. Those were the important ones. I've since made up more. I'm good at that...making up more. There are angels in my story, it's so easy to open an Angel Encyclopedia and find new ones.

So basically, there will never be as many dolls as characters for me. I'm at the point now where I don't want any more as my characters, the ones left aren't important enough for me to care about them. A few I have aren't important enough, but for whatever reason, I have them as dolls.

I actually do have one doll based off a comic character (not so much "based off" as is...), and I'm planning on making at least one more....so I don't even need my own characters now to "make" dolls! Scary.

I can't do the "shared" character thing....my dolls can only be themselves if that makes sense....and with one exception, I can't change their characters either. If they don't work out, they get sold, and I find another doll who will work. I do have a bunch of dolls who are the same character. They're like, an actual percentage of my collection now. O.o

Commenting on your future dolls: Yay comic characters!!! I'm doing a few X-men now (sorta), and I'd love to see what you do with your Marvel and DC based dolls!!

    12. I end up always with the doll first, mostly due to their aesthetic. I have many characters, but none of them translate over into dolls (aside from the Marvel character of Shatterstar I'm doing). So, I actually have more dolls than characters, to be honest, because I don't plan the character out first. I admire the people who have the character planned out beforehand; their ideas get translated so well!

    13. I don't have OCs. I'm not a writer or anything of the sort...I just like dolls and drawing. I create my OCs after I get the doll, the doll gives me the vision and the character, so I guess my dolls are my characters.

    14. I have way more characters than dolls, and I'm okay with that. I RP with my dolls, and after a while we tend to add more characters to the mix just to make things interesting. If I tried to doll all of my characters I'd probably have over fifty or sixty dolls, and that's just too many! I just pick the core characters that I really like to doll, though I have to admit, having so many characters makes it easier to impulse buy.

    15. I don't have any characters but lots of dolls :) Maybe I will think of some characters for some of my dolls but definitely not all of them since I really don't have that much creativity :)

    16. I'm finding the responses to this thread really interesting! I expected the general consensus of there being far too many characters for all the dolls, but I'm surprised that most are firm about keeping their dolls tied to one concept. It's really cool other people are into making their dolls into fan-tributes and I'm a little surprised more of you don't mention doll cosplay. It's really neat how most of you consider each doll to be one core individual, although I lean that way myself, I also see them as being more malleable and there's a grey area between some of my characters where there isn't much difference.I think it will be really interesting to see how my tastes evolve once I get my dolls, and if they end up taking on identities outside the characters I dress them as.

    17. I have way more characters than dolls, but I don't really have the desire to shell all of my characters. I have a specific storyline from which I want to shell about 4 characters from, and then perhaps 2 or 3 of my other characters which are very special to me.

    18. I have two different stories that are important to me. The first story's characters are msd sized except for two yosd girls. The second set of characters will be SDs. Right now, I'm focusing on shelling the characters from the first story. I'm on my 5th doll with about 5 more to go. Then I'll start the second set of characters. I'm not sure how many characters I plan to shell in the second story. I haven't really thought about it to much because I'm still working towards to the first set.

I plan to only have 1 character per doll. I don't think they can be more than one person. I do have one character who is pretending to be another character in the story. She will often be portrayed as the other character even if that isn't who she is. Their stories are very closely intertwined so I plan on shelling them both. It's going to be hard to find two sculpts that resemble each other but still look different, especially since the other character is a boy.

    19. I have loads of characters, but each of my dolls will only have one. Well, except they may dress up as different reincarnations of their character, or cosplay, but that's it. Sam is definitely going to cosplay Sebastian from Black Butler. ;) I want to shell characters from the stories I have planned that take place in the same universe, as well as a character from a scrapped story (who was the character I wanted to shell in the first place) and my main roleplay character (Jonathan Crane, or Scarecrow, from the Batman universe). :) While I doubt I can shell every character I want, I'd like to shell the ones whose stories I actually end up writing. But, eh... we'll see! I don't think I'll ever be done. Can't you see me, laying on my deathbed, whispering, "just... one... more... doll..."

    20. I have more or less a 1-to-1 ratio of characters to dolls. I have some vaguely-defined characters who are currently without dolls, but I generally don't develop a character until I have their doll form as inspiration. And since I use my dolls as inspiration for my characters, I haven't had any characters 'change' dolls yet, and I can't really see it happening.
