Dolls with emotion

Apr 21, 2015

    1. Recently I have found myself drawn to grumpy pouty dolls, I also love Loongsoul Emily's misunderstood face up and when I got my first doll I gave her sad looking eyebrows now I'm thinking of doing that again in her next face up. I've seen quite a few people say they don't like sad looking dolls.

What do you guys think of sad looking dolls?

Are you drawn to expressive dolls/face ups if so what kind of emotions do you go for?

Do you have any expressive dolls or dolls with expressive face up's, or do you ever plan to have a face up done based on emotion?

    2. I don't particularly like extreme expressions like crying or yelling, but I'd love a grumpy doll. Still I'd rather have it all be like a neutral expression (like how some people look grumpy all the time) instead of an specific emotion

    3. I have one doll with a very defined expression: FairyLand Pukifee Pong. I love how happy and excited Pong looks! It's hard to feel sad or listless looking at it. Pong version 2, Cupid's various incarnations, and Reni are just so...happy! I am not a fan of very angry or sad looking dolls. It's an intensity in a direction I don't want around me.

    4. Another grumpy fan here. I have a thing for those romantic eyes and these dolls tend to look rather sad or grumpy.
I also want a Pong, but I want to do something different with that faceplate than happy.

Ringdoll Mona, the crying doll, I do have her in my favs, but I wouldn't want to own one myself. I also like smirking dolls, but when choosing my Souldoll Joelle, I went for neutral expression Joelle instead of Joelle D. because I wanted to be sure I wouldn't grow bored or get creeped out by an eternally smirking doll.

    5. I am not fan of crying dolls, But I like the face with a little bit sad looking.

    6. I can admire dolls with very strong expressions (toothy smiles, crying faces, frowning, etc), but they aren't for me personally. I prefer to have my dolls in neutral states so I'm not as limited in photos.

    7. I find that I'm drawn to pouty, sad, or bitchy faces on dolls. I do prefer expressive faces in general but I tend to really like the pouty and sad faces best. I love boy dolls that have attitude or what my friend's call "resting bitch face." I don't know why but I find it so sexy. I fell in love with my first girl doll because the company face up makes it look like she was crying in some photos, or just really shy in others. I like meek looking girls with a touch of sadness.

    8. After buying my dolls I realize I don't have as much control over that. It's so odd. Like I have an idea in my head and see a doll that fits it but then I just go the total opposite way. I am totally convince my dolls are picking me, more than I am them. lol. My BJD's are really very pretty but not super dramatic expressions to their face but then they are not the normal "very happy!" faces either. For some reason, super smiley dolls freak me out. I may have a face up done eventually but I am really nervous about the idea. I feel like face ups change your dolls completely.

Sad looking dolls can still be cute but it has to be done correctly. I am so crazy about details and this is why I probably won't ever be able to do a face up. I would never be happy. :(

I am more drawn to cute dolls but like I said the dolls have been choosing me so not all of them are the normal super cute, that I would choose.

    9. I like dolls with defined expressions, and I like a little of everything. I have happy dolls, grumpy and moody dolls, cute and sweet dolls, and even one that looks a little worried. Their expressions help define their characters and how they will interact with each other.

I don't have one that is outright sad, it would have to be a very special one that "speaks" to me for me to buy it.

Eyebrows are VERY important to me for defining specific emotions in a doll. If I am commissioning a faceup, I am most concerned with how the eyebrows turn out. And I like a doll whose expression changes in photographs depending on the camera angle.

I had a spare head for my Ninodoll Bada modded with his eyes closed to make it look like he is laughing. (He is also supposed to look like a specific anime character.)

Apparently he is also ticklish. (Bada is on the right.)

    10. My doll actually has a smug face. I dont know if it's the sculpt itself ir the faceup but he looks pretty smug with a minor smile.
      I really like it. ~

    11. For my collection I like dolls with gentle happy faces or neutral expressions. That said, I greatly admire dolls that look melancholy, but I don't want to look at them all the time, it would get me down too much.

    12. I am the same grinning faces on dolls just looks to unnatural, when I do "a sad face up" it's mostly just in the eyebrows and blushing that makes them look a bit flushed.

    13. I really adore dolls with emotions, my two dolls both look kinda grumpy, but in two different directions. My Eden's more pissed/mad, meanwhile Nōy tends to have a rather arrogant/moody face. Subtle touches of moods really come well on bjds in my opinion, but I, personally wouldn't buy a doll with a sculpted on emotion like Ringdoll Mona or IOS Jaguar, even though i absolutely adore them and enjoy looking at in photos. Guess I'm just too much of a coward to go with a single expression that won't be changed with wipping off the faceup.

    14. I love dolls with grumpy faces - the DollShe Saint would be my number one favourite in that category. I also have a strange fascination for dolls that look somewhat...unhinged. Think IoS Jaguar and Ringdoll Norman Dark 2.0 (the latter I have on order currently). Insanity is infectious.

    15. I like emotion in my doll faces but also fairly neutral expressions. The only guy dolls I have ever wanted were angry looking but thats probably because I want my boy to look like a metalhead. I settled on saving for a SoulDoll Jang because a Dollmore Mettaa is just too big... My girls are smiling but X looks sleepy, Tripp looks mischievous, and my OT porcelain girl looks thoughtful and a little sad. I think the big grinny ones are cute, but not for me. I do find I am very attracted to grumpy dolls though, I just love them!

    16. My favorite dolly expressions are smiles. My grail doll, Puck by BJD Freakstyle, has the best grin ever. Delf Lishe is another favorite because of her subtle smirk. I love Pukipuki Pong Pong most of all the puki pukis. Pong Pong has an enormous smile! :cheer

    17. I'm a huge fan of expression, I can understand the difficulty in getting one since most of the time theyre sitting on a shelf and it seems like they're frozen in time versus if their face is calm it makes them look like they could actually be sitting there
but the more expressive the better in my opinion. crying faces are great, yelling is awesome, things that alter the shape of the eyes from how open the jaw may be. hard to find a good selection of them sadly

    18. I have a soft spot for the sad ones - I fell in love with my first doll (DT Seola) because of her beautiful sad, thoughtful face. I also adore my PKF Cony's sad expression and my PKF Choco's pout. I don't think I'd want a Ringdoll Mona, but I found the photos mesmerizing when she first came out. I think it's because of growing up with play dolls who all had those shiny happy faces.

On the other hand, I love my PKF Shiwoo's little smirk. She (mine is a girl Shiwoo) looks like "I know something you don't. And I'm not telling you what it is."

    19. I tend to prefer a neutral-to-slightly happy look in most of my sculpts. Something that's flexible, and can take on several expressions depending on how the head is angled. However, I do have a LTF Reni, whose big smile is fantastic! I may someday try to find a second faceplate that looks like it could match Reni to be a more subdued expression for her, but for now, that smile's adorable and it fits the character well. I love the Shiwoo Smirk all three of my boys have, but it's a lot more subdued than Reni's face.

On the other side of the spectrum, I have LTF Piki, who looks perpetually worried (and his faceup deliberately emphasizes that). I also have LM Little Irin, who has a bit of a resting bitchface, and incoming is IS LanXing, who has a very definite scowl. Piki and LanXing were both deliberately chosen for those expressions, to match natures of their characters, and Irin was a raffle prize; she's not what I normally would have chosen, but in spite of the bitchface, she's still a lovely girl.

    20. I think Ringdoll has a few dolls that are extremely expressive, but I feel like I would get bored with their expression. For example, I really admire the Mona sculpt but I wouldn't own it because I don't know how I'd use a perpetually sad doll. Same with a pukifee pongpong- I am afraid I would get bored of its expression (I actually want one though, because they are too cute). I think straight faces are so much more versatile- either that or slight smirking faces, like Iple's JID Edwin, he's a cutie <3
