1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dolly Meta

Aug 28, 2014

    1. I feel like I can't be the only one who's added some kind of meta characteristics to their collection, and was curious who else out there may have done it. In a way, it adds an extra, subtle layer to some of the groups I've pulled together here; something that isn't obvious, perhaps, to the casual viewer, but creates an additional feature of the collection that at least I can appreciate, even if no one else may.
Do you have any meta aspects to your collection?
What sort of characteristics are they?
Why did you decide to add those elements? Or did it just happen?

To start things out, naturally, yes I do have these aspects! Specifically, within two particular sub-sets of my collection. In one, the group represents a "family" of sorts that has come together across multiple nationalities, ethnicities, and parallel worlds; while when I got the first two dolls in the set I was thinking more about scaling between them, as I started to explore more sculpts I realized that I could distinguish their origins through the distinctive sculpting characteristics of different companies. Thus, a company can only repeat in the set if that particular origin is represented more than once; the MNFs are from one nation, the LM dolls from another, and so on. It offers each origin its own origin, in a way, and has really made me branch out and look at a lot more companies than I would have, otherwise!

Within the second family... that all depends on if I can actually bring it together as I want to, really. In this case, the collection will ultimately represent only four characters, two couples. One is from the present, and the other from the past, with the easiest way to describe them being that the present-day couple is a "reincarnation"* of the past one. I'm using CP dolls to represent these four, and so far have succeeded in acquiring the "past" selves, specifically, two secondhand CP Luts Delfs. To complete the set, I'll be getting the same sculpts as FL F60s fresh from the company, thus making the "past" selves the older, discontinued sculpts, while the "present" selves are the brand new, available versions. Having the old as the old, and the new as the new, will again be one of those things that maybe only I will appreciate, but once I happened on the idea that I could do such a thing, I definitely wanted to accomplish it!

So what about you? Have you done anything like this with your collection? :D

    2. I guess I kind of do in a sense. I call one of my dolls "class president" because whenever I display her with my other dolls, no matter what size they are, she seems to dominate over them like one of those bossy anime class president types.

Other than that they are mostly treated with the same feelings as my other cherished objects. I really only refer to dolls and stuffed animals with pronouns like they, he, and she because they are made to look like living things. I do talk to them and treat them well though since I like them a lot and I think all objects have an energy to them. I want my dolls to collect good energy.

    3. Sometimes outside of my storylines, I will have my dolls refer to the fact that they're dolls. Usually they are interacting with me instead of each other, and I am just doing a funny story for the entertainment of my friends.

Here I am forcing Gavreau into a centurion costume. He especially hates it when I'm in control because he's a real bastard in my stories.

I started doing this with my first BJD because he didn't have anyone else to play with. But I wrote myself out of the stories (for the most part) after some more BJDs arrived.

    4. Vince's entire character is sort of meta-- he's the doll who's 'aware he's a doll', but he does interact with the other dolls, who have a setting and story and characters where they would never be aware of that. (they wind up with a little meta awareness when interacting with him because he makes it hard to ignore, but it's forgotten any time he's not there)

    5. I've got a few dolls that are dolls in character as well! So I suppose a doll who is a doll character aware that they are a doll is sort of meta... The Elysian race that built them actually uses them as dolls/automatons/magic-driven robot-helpers on occasion, but honestly? They are mostly toys that will also make you coffee if you so desire and can be trained to do a variety of tasks even within the actual story. And I suppose this is taken one step further with the Engel line of six units that may ascend into a higher level of consciousness therefore being able to "actually understand" what they are as opposed to treating it as simple information.

Furthermore, Ushiwakamaru's character is a member of a doll-making clan of onmyouji that use their dolls as substitutes and/or vessels for their shikigami and has two dolls of his own. So technically he is a doll that collects/owns dolls. =P

    6. My Ashly (MA Corvi/IOS 80) is sort of a meta character/doll. Although my whole cast of characters is firmly in their own story and world, which is a slightly alternate modern setting in San Francisco, Ashly is also the most advanced and least connected-to-reality psychic. I have said in talking about him, that he is in touch with so many versions of reality and that in one of his realities he knows he is a doll. And that it would only take some further focus for him to switch realities and cross over, becoming the doll.

I wish I'd made this up about a smaller doll, the idea of an 80cm doll coming to life is more unnerving. >_>

    7. I do this. Outside my regular storylines, I do stories in which my dolls interact with me. In some stories, they at least acknowledge that they have 'doll characteristics' instead of being fully-realized entities in their own right.

Also, I think my incoming Lumedoll Blaze is going to be very meta. In his story, he's essentially a mysteriously miniaturized man being looked after by a family of normal-sized people (i.e. my SD+ crew). The character is a fully-realized yet tiny man, not a doll, although he sometimes gets treated like one. (Élise, in particular, likes to dress him up and carry him around, and treats him almost as if he's a child even though he's clearly an adult).

    8. Yes I do this with my dolls. I Started Off with Renji (From Bleach) because I wanted a doll that was of my cosplay, and my friend had a Byakuya. (don't worry I'm not off topic I'm getting there.) Second doll was Rukia. Then the Third doll was Thomas and he and Rukia hooked up and had one baby and then I got 2 more Kids for them. Then I brought in May who is Thomas's sister and then Klaus who is May's BF. Once I got Trill and Sarish I had May and Klaus break up and now him and Trill are together. May and Sarish are trying to make it work but they're more like good friends. Thomas and Rukia are married they had some marriage problems at the star because she really did like Renji. Trill and Klaus are engaged but Trill isn't ready to settle down.

I also have Castor who is a centaur and he was a twin with his brother Polocks but his twin died (real story my friend was going to order the same one and in the end couldn't). He is close to my other Centaur Cyan and they babysit Rukia and Thomas's kids and hope to have one of there own one day (waiting for tiny taurs to come out again) they have tried a few times but nothing ever works out.

I just got my new boy Pine I haven't fit him into the story yet but soon he will fit in soon I just have to finish styling his hair and a few things May is not sure she is interested but like I said he has to finish getting ready. He is mostly my little boy right now.

Thats the main part of the I have a few others who fit in but there more like friends of the the dolls like my doll Vince he is just Thomas's buddy who has had a rough year but is getting better and will soon be able to chill with his friend again.

    9. I see this a lot in box openings and I like using those elements in BOs as well. Mostly it's dolls asking for wigs or their eyes to be put in (which makes clear that they know that they're dolls waiting to be whole).
I did a BO where the new doll was trying out wigs and ended up stealing some other doll's wig to try it on.
I think adding meta elements to a story can be a funny way to do even more with your dolls. ^^
