1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dolly Pawning?

May 12, 2015

    1. (Please delete if done or inappropriate!)

I've realized a lot lately that people can be forced into a situation where they sell a beloved doll because they need money for other things, and while I understand a lot of things come before dolls and doll clothes etc, it's a shame to see someone part with something they love. Would dolly pawning be a good idea? Would you do it? how could the system work and would it be successful? If such a system were in place, the owner would have more piece of mind that their doll could come back as apposed to being sold on permanently. Interested to hear if anyone else has thought about stuff like this, or if it is even a practice already!

    2. I actually have heard of this, though it wasn't through a pawn shop. Someone was having financial troubles, and their friends offered to "buy" their dolls from them, with the agreement that they would "sell" them back to the person at the same price when she was able to afford it again. Once, I loaned a friend some money, and she let me keep her doll as collateral until she paid back the loan (which she did on time). I think that would be more comfortable than a pawn shop, who may know very little about a doll's value or care.

    3. I could conceivably see a BJD store doing this as well. You'd 'sell' your doll to them for slightly less than the going price (to cover the costs of storage space and such) and then later buy it back for the going price, maybe in layaway payments to make it easier to afford. If you don't buy it back after a certain length of time or default on your layaway, they'd be free to sell the doll on. There are stores that sell second-hand dolls already, so a system like this might actually make sense. People at a BJD store know how to handle dolls and owners could trust them to keep the doll safe while it's there.
