Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. "Downsizing" the hobby -- c/would you?

Jan 11, 2013

    1. I'm not active in this hobby anymore but I still own all three of my dolls and their things. I'm thinking about downsizing to just one doll, since I'd probably never buy another one if I got rid of all of them and I might miss having at least one around.

But I can't decide which doll I'd keep, since one is irreplaceable market-wise and another is of sentimental value, or if I'd best just hock them all and buy one new doll with wardrobe.

I'm sure other people have downsized in this hobby before, so I'd like to hear about it. How far did you downsize? Are you more content without the hoards? Any regrets?

To those who haven't downsized: would you, could you, should you feel the need to?

    2. I feel the need too! I have 75, with one on the way, and 2 awaiting payments, thankfully not due until late Feb! I'd like to start over and just keep a few but I doubt anyone would be interested in my dolls. Some I could never get rid of.

    3. I've thought about this, and I could choose one of my dolls that I would keep over the rest if I absolutely needed to. I enjoy having more than one doll so for the time being I can't see myself downsizing. I don't think it's necessary unless you want or need to. I've just decided to slow down and plan out my doll purchases so I can enjoy the ones I have and slowly integrate new ones without being overwhelmed.

    4. I have about 45 BJD's and about 1000 vintage dolls . In about 10 years I plan a major downsize so I can move. There are around 3 that I will definitely keep. I have started the vintage downsize already but I am not ready to part with the BJD's yet!

    5. Personally speaking, I find it difficult to let go of any of my dolls that I have spent time with or made clothes for
I still have many dolls stored, though many of my early dolls were discarded by my parents or given to my sister ( she is 11 yrs younger than me) and what with moving house so often only one still survives. He takes pride of place on my aunts bed!
Though now I have a huge collection of antique dolls (all carefully stored) and currently I have a sizable BJD collection which I have to admit, tho I love them all if they had to go it would be best not to choose and just clear the lot.??

    6. Oh dear have I downsized over the years!! by the late 90s I had a room and a walk-in closet full of dolls of all kinds (though that was before bjd), but moving into progressively smaller places kind of did away with all that. Even a few years ago I had like 22 bjd at one time, i think my max was? Now I have five, I think... but I can't see them all staying forever. As I get older, I like less and less stuff. ^^;; I always thought I'd be a crazy doll lady forever. Now I am left mostly with just the crazy! XD

    7. I only have one doll at the moment, but I can't see having more than three or four at a time. I'm just not that into stuff, if that makes any sense. My house already seems so cluttered.

    8. To those who haven't downsized: would you, could you, should you feel the need to?

I think I would downsize if I had to,or didn't feel the same way about my dolls anymore. Maybe keeping just one doll,or selling them all to buy a new one would renew your interest in this hobby.

    9. If I were in your position and felt that it was time to part ways with the majority of my collection, I believe I would keep the one doll that was of the most sentimental value to me and not be concerned with any super rare, collector dolls that I might have. The only reason I would keep those I guess is if I were willing to wait until they had more value to sell... but I don't even think I would then. I mean to say, if I were leaving the hobby but wanted to hold on to one doll, I would hold onto the one that brought me the most joy so I could look at it every day. The others, sitting in closets out of the sun and out of view waiting for their value to increase would just be a waste of space for me. But that's just me. :)

    10. I downsized from 7 to 1 before- then I became interested in a different aspect of the hobby and "upsized" again fairly quickly in a new direction :) I found downsizing was a good way to gauge how much interest I still had in the hobby.

    11. I am trying. Twenty-something dolls is too many for me.

    12. I never could. D:
I can downsize other collections, but my dolls mean a lot.
I'm thinking about selling one, because it was an event gift that I never bonded with...

But all my others? Oh my gosh, no.

    13. I've been selling some of my dolls, but my collection keeps getting larger, but my current resolution is to not buy new dolls without selling one of the current ones due to space issues and I don't think I could keep track of more dolls. x_x 7 is about the limit of my attention span and since I don't buy dolls with identical needs usually, every single one needs different clothes so keeping them clothed with enough variety is a lot of trouble!

    14. At the moment I don't have a lot so I don't feel the need. I really control myself in getting new dolls just so I never have to go through the phase of downsizing. I just try to spoil the ones I have now. :)

    15. I know myself well enough to know that eventually I'll downsize the crew. Probably by quite a lot, given the number of dolls I own...

I came into the whole BJD thing knowing from the start that no hobby or collection is forever for me. I tend to keep up my interest in something for a few years, then move on to something else. I usually hold on to my favorite things from the former hobby or collection, but it's very rare that I hang on to everything. I simply don't have the space for that.

So, while it's likely that I'll have my favorite dolls around for the rest of my life, I also know that some day I'll look at the majority of the crew and know that it's time for them to move on. I've enjoyed them while I've had them, though, so I'll have no regrets.

    16. I haven't ever sold a doll (been buying since 2004!), so I've got a definite hoarder mentality.

I DO wish to downsize in material items, but I have a LOT of other stuff to downsize before I get to my dolls.

I know I COULD downsize a bit, but the dolls are my latest and probably last big hobby, so I'm not really worried about it. As I said, I have a LOT of stuff I WANT to get rid of first. And then I could get rid of some doll clothes and wigs before dolls...

So while I COULD, it's not likely I ever will downsize on dolls... Not unless something drastic happens, anyway! *_*

    17. Maybe it's because I just started, but I can't really think of selling any of my dolls.
I have parted with many things before, figurines, manga, trading cards, all of which I put in a lot of money and time collecting but some day just lost interest ... but for now, I'm certain bjds are different.
one because I have waited for 10 years or so wanting one before finally buying the first, not only because of money issues (I COULD have bought a few instead of buying tons of trading cards X'D)
so yeah, no. I don't think I could downsize unless I really have to. unlike my ability to part with any other hobby I've had so far X'D

    18. I haven't really had to downsize yet since I only have 12 BJDs at the moment but I have put some of my plans for new ones on the back burner so I can have room for other types of dolls that I collect. I couldn't part with any of my crew at the moment.

    19. It's interesting to see everyone's limit on how many dolls they'd have before they start downsizing lol Here I am with only three (and a head) and I'm ready to chuck 'em all! I started looking for the "one" doll I'd buy new since my kids are just too big for my taste, sentimental or not (so all of their doll stuff has to go too, hmmm). I love hearing everyone else's input! Thanks, guys!

    20. I don't see the need. Ironically my 38 doll collection seems to be about mid-size for this forum! LOL! They pack up easily and I can move them when needed. I have definitely sold off dolls to buy other dolls but at this point I've run out of dolls I want to sell (and there is one I'm just stuck with).

Maybe when I'm an old woman I'll start finding homes for them before I die or something, but now I just enjoy the ones I have :) Although I have a few that still need finishing...
