Dream of Doll DoT Boy reviews and opinions

Dec 15, 2006

    1. So I'm trying to decide who to get next. It's been awhile (a little over a year) since I've brought anyone home and since I moved away from small-cosmos my girls are terribly lonely and need some more friends. I'm also trying to pick a doll that looks like a certain someone in my life and it's not easy. I immediately fell upon the Volks FCS 21 head, but I honestly have other things I'd like to spend a grand on (especially a doll that isn't limited). Then my friend recommended Dream of Doll, namely the DOT boys. They look absolutely stunning but I know next to nothing about them. So I was curious if anyone out there who owns a DOT doll and especially those who own DOTs and other dolls could tell me some comparisons.

How do the boy dolls range in height to Volks girls (I have an SD13 Sara, old school)? Yeah yeah, they give me numbers, I know how tall my girl is, but I would love to see a shot.

What quality is the resin on DOT? What is the color like (I notice they don't offer beauty white...)? Is it lighter or comparable to Volks old normal skin?

Are the knee joints really as cool looking as they appear to be? Because, really, they look friggin awesome and realistic!

What problems have you had with your DOT doll?

Anything else I would need to know if I selected one of these.

Thank you anyone who can offer input!

    2. we've got four DOT boys in the house here, if that tells you anything (mizunoseiryuu owns three of them, and i own the fourth), and they are TALL. 64cm. we don't have an SD13 girl to stand next to them for height comparison, but we do have this --

from left to right -- Beylynn, Narsha boy, 35cm; Kaoru, OrientDoll Il, 40cm; Tamsin, Rasendo Aria boy, 56cm; Keibhan, Narin, 60cm, Kyo, Dolkot HaRa, 62-63cm, Sterling, DOD Sha, 64cm, Sora, DOD Lahoo, 64cm

DOD resin is very pale, and very pink in tone. it does yellow to a nice tone --

this is my Camine, Cyr with mizunoseiryuu's Lahoo, Sora. Sora arrived in June of this year, and Cyr arrived mid-November. Sora has yellowed some, Cyr has not.

as for the knee joints, yes, they're just as cool looking as they seem to be. i adore their knees.

as for problems... the only problems we've had here is that they come very loosely strung through the legs, but that's very easy to fix, and they have VERY large feet, not in length so much (although they ARE fairly long) but in width. the toe-box of any shoes or boots must be fairly generous, and boots that can be adjusted (laces as well as zippers) are a plus, to accomodate their ankles. their heads are on the small side, but not terribly so. it does make shopping for wigs a challenge, but far from impossible, as you can see from the photos.

otherwise, they pose like a dream and are very expressive.

oh yeah -- as to why Sora and Sterling have yellowed so much, mizunoseiryuu didn't realize they were getting morning sun in the room we keep them in, so for a few months they got a fair bit of direct sunlight in the early morning. to keep that from continuing, we've been making sure to close the drapes at night, and not open them until the sun has moved over enough not to be shining right in. the color is lovely, though, so she's not upset about it.

    3. I've got two DOT boys and in my eyes they are close to perfect ;D.

It's true that they pose very, very well. They are also very photogenic, especially Camine... it's almost impossible to make a bad photo of him XD (easier with Lahoo, though, hoho.)

The only bad aspect is on the wig side, it's not so easy to get wigs size 8/9...

I'm getting a DIM Danbi next week so I'll be able to send comparison pics of him & DOTs eventually ;).

    4. I have 4 SD-13 Volks boys, 3 SD-10 Volks Boys, 1 SD-16 Volks boy, 4 CustomHouse boys, 1 DOT Ducan, several minis of various kinds, and a few girls of different kinds.

The Dot resin is very nice. I got Homme Ducan because I always found the dolls to be very attractive. (I have to admit, I got Elf Kirill to check out the resin and faceup. Needless to say I was pleased with the mini elf....)

I really do love all my dolls, but I find the faceups of the CustomHouse, SoulDoll and DoD to be really nice. (I grant, all the dolls I have from CH are Unique, and the same is true for the two SoulDoll dolls I have.) Homme Ducan's faceup is gorgeous and I really do like this doll. He's not limited, though.

    5. Hm lesse,

I started with DoTs, moved to lati and have a FCS boy on the way. I was housing a Dollshe for a while too.

The DoD resin is pale with a lovely pinkish tone to it (hence why they don't offer BW - except for their limited dolls). The quality is good and I haven't had any issues with them.

All of my DoTs came well strung though I've heard some say too tight, or too loose. I suppose it's luck of the draw. Either way, I've never restrung a doll until last week and my DoT boy was super easy (he needed a bath and a tightening up only because I've played with him heavily since May)

Head mechanism - very easy to open the headcap. Magnetic and stays on nicely. Removing the head is easy as well. Lift the s-hook and turn until it slides out the neck opening. Putting it back on is just as easy. Fit the s-hook through lift and turn until it sits in the fitted groove.

Mould - I prefer a smaller head to body ratio (more realistic) which is probably why I like DoTs much more than say the CP boys and girls. They are taller but not overly so. Their body sculpt I quite like, and I like the torso joint. The locking legs are a plus and make them so easy to stand. The feet like some said are wide but it's not too hard to find them shoes. Hands are on the big side but they're quite nice.

Clothing - they'll fit the SD13 long leg boy pants :) in general their limbs are a bit longer, otherwise they fit into most of what my old CP boy (before he went to his new home) wore. Like I said shoes can be more difficult especially as DoD is often sold out of theirs and restocks are not all that often. Sellers on eBay have relatively cheap shoes that will fit (I have a few pair I need to get rid of myself ;)) and a lot of the wider toed boots fit well. Their legs aren't quite as beefy as the CP boys so they fit into most boots there as well that have a nice generous width.

Faceup - DoD does lovely subtle faceups. Normally they don't custom so if you want a custom better to find someone on the boards to do it or do it yourself

Eyes and wigs - eyes are easy to find at 16mm, wigs are a 8/9 size so companies that sell similar sized head dolls are good as well as Jpop. I think Kstarr can also do 8/9 wigs but I haven't tried. I do know I -love- the Jpop wigs...so silky and soft and no staining yet.

Wait times - usually around 5 weeks to ship date. Right now closer to 8 with all the dolls they're coming out with. Much faster than an FCS though (I just got word mine is ready! after 13 weeks)

      Pics:

NS Elf Ducan (homme ducan is the same mould just no pointy ears) - default faceup

NS Sha - indoors flash and no flash for resin comparison - default faceup

DoT Sha vs CP SS NS El (see the resin difference! with flash because of the backlighting at my old house)

    6. I've been looking at 60cm dolls for a bit, and NO other dolls have really interested me then the DOT boys.

I've been absolutely obsessing over the DOT Shall, because he is so beautiful.

I was wondering what the opinions are on the DOTs? Before I spend 600+ on a DOT, I wanna make sure he is the one for me! :o

    7. Eeek. I didn't even notice the DOT thread sticky at the top.

Rawr. Ignore my stupid self. @_@

    8. Actually, I kinda still do need help. D:

After reading all that was said in the threads, it seems like DOD has a pretty bad reputation. Just because of the poor customer service, and the inconsistency of their resin and so on.

But no one has really said anything of how they are like NOW.

The DOT boys are really one of the FEW boys I actually really really like. I don't know what to do, because I rather not deal with all of the trouble, if its not gonna be worth it.

    9. I have a DOT Camine. He's a bit over a year old now and I love him to bits. I really like the DOT boys' lanky bodies, beautiful hands and smaller heads. And I've never had problems with DOD's customer service. Sure, its'n not as good as say Iplehouse's, but it works well enough.

Buying eyes, wigs, shoes and clothes for DOT boys can be a bit of a challenge, occasionally. They have tricky eye holes, small heads, big feet and long limbs. So for example a good deal of the stuff that Luts sells just doesn't fit.

I'm very fond of my doll's pale resin. And I really like his size and looks. DOTs pose well, especially when hot glue sueded. Also if you're feeling unsure about buying from DOD, DOTs pop up quite regularly on the second hand market. If you get the chance, going to a meet and seeing one might help^^

    10. Oh I didn't realise I put Shall instead of Sha!

But hmm. If I truely want him, I'll deal with the customer service, but if clothing is a big issue I dont know if I wanna go thru that. D:

Finding cloths for my current DZ is already tough..... But those DOTs are sooo amazing.

    11. DoTs are the best >;p

I've only ever handled Lahoo and Camine, but I would definitely recommend beveling the eyes to better fit 16mm (or 18mm I guess). The customer service really is hit and miss, but the dolls are just absolutely so lovely <3

    12. I have a Camine (on a girl body, though) and I haven't had any problems with resin quality. The customer service was adequate -- it took a long time for my doll to ship, but they let me know and everything.

I second the eye beveling thing. DOTs tend to get a little crosseyed because DOD doesn't bevel their eyes terribly well. An eye beveler will only cost you a few dollars, though, and beveling the eyes is maybe 30 minutes of work.

The one problem I have seen is that sometimes DOD resin is a little shiny. I didn't have this problem with my doll, but the option hands I bought for her later are kinda glossy. A little sanding with high-grit sandpaper or a coat of MSC fixes that right up, though (I just haven't gotten around to sanding the spare hands yet).

    13. Hit and miss is the word to describe their customer service. Sometimes I don't know if they are just ignoring me, or not even receiving my mails.

I never had trouble finding clothes for my DOT boys. Luts clothes do fit them fine in my opinion.

DOT has large hands and feet so sometimes you need to remove their hands to put on clothes. Shoes make sure you get the right size.

Wigs you should get one that's 7.5-8.5, 8.5 and above will be quite big on them and just look silly! They have small heads.

They pose pretty well. Resin is pretty nice. If only they would stock more CLOTHES....

Eyes 16-18 is good. My Sha can't wear anything bigger than 18 (his eye sockets are really narrow). 18 pretty much fills 90% of his eyes so I can't imagine 20s and above O_O

DOCs can wear 14-16mm. MSD clothes do fit them ok. Even minifee clothes fit them. Shoes are not hard to find for them but I hate their feet (it's hard to hook the feet back once you remove them and I do this all the time when putting clothes on them) So I just added S hooks to the feet to avoid trouble.

Homme Ducan and Elf Ducan can probably wear a 20 I think since their eyes are wider (although I've never tried).

They stain really easily though (from wigs and clothes). My other dolls don't do that except for DODs. Maybe it's just me.

    14. Well, I managed to completely skip out on the customer service issue by buying Lahoo secondhand. For me, DoD's dolls are always the most beautiful. Maybe it's just cause I saw them first, but Lahoo definitely didn't disappoint me in comparison to what I saw on the site.

As for clothes, I believe there are folks on here that make clothing for DoT. So..that's always something to look into.

    15. I love DOT boys as well. I have a DOT Lahoo, my SOrren. He is the only the doll I have ever trully bonded with. I have had other dolls that I liked very much, but none could compare to my affection for my Sorren.

They are good posers, they have a very beautiful body in my opinion. Their facial features are so gracefull.

I have no problem fiding clothes for him! Iplehouse has a lovely collection that fits him perfectly. Also SD13 clothes for the long leg type will do fine as well. I got an SD13 skimpy jean from 4D and it fits like a glove.

Shoes can be a problem. SD13 shoes will fit better than shoes made for luts boys.He has also worn a pair of Hound boots that look lovely , although I feared that they might look too big.

COstumer service has always been very polite and I had no problem with them.

The only problem in my opinion is that DOD has a long turnaroung. About 6 or 7 weeks. But if you are willing to wait it defenitely worth the while.

    16. Oh wow. Thanks everyone for the info! I would be lost without DOA. :heartbea
I think someone said that all DOTs have magnetic caps?

    17. Yes they do:)

    18. So far all the clothing and shoes I've got from Dollheart also fit my Wynn (a Camine), though a couple of the trousers do ride up the ankes a bit when he's sitting - looks fine standing. As for the resin, his was a sort of shiny/blotchy for the hands but the body was much better; as Chibaraki said, a very fine paper or sponge (600+) will solve that easily. Not had any problems with discolouration from clothes so far, but he's only 6 months old.

    19. I have a homme ducan, I've never had a different doll so i don't really have anything to compare him to but I think that he is just great! I had no problem with customer service when I got him. I think that DoTs have great preportions, they're all long! The only problem is his wig doesn't stay on without putting elastic bands around his head, even though its a DoT wig. He has a magnetic head cap and locking knees to help him stand :)

    20. I have three dolls from DoD, two DoTs and one DoC....all bought from Sept. 2006 to Feb. 2007. I have NEVER had a problem with customer service (and I have bought wigs and extra hands outside of doll orders, so bump that to five seperate orders with zero problems) and my dolls always come to me perfect!!! My DoT Homme Ducan is a BEAUTIFUL boy...the body is so amazingly sculpted. He can pose wonderfully and stands on his own. I'm very *very* pleased with DoD!!

As with resin, I never had a problem with matching. Even my second-hand, older DoT Shall's resin looks fine next to my brand-new resin Ducan:

Btw, I got more "naked" pics as well as pics next to Shall (older resin) here:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1567907#post1567907

EDIT: Some more comments: 1) I got Ducan *extremely* fast....one four weeks instead of the seven I was expecting. Also, his wig (and all of the DoD wigs I've bought for my DoD dolls) have fit like a dream ^___^
      Hope this helps!!
