Ever come to love a mold you once hated?

Oct 24, 2009

    1. The strangest thing happened to me recently. I used to very much dislike the look of the sd10 four sisters sculpt, but recently I feel I must have one! It was totally out of the blue, I hadn't seen one in a particularly different look than what I'd seen before and yet suddenly it's like some kind of weird dolly craving like I must have one right now O_o I don't have a character in mind for the doll, and she'll totally derail my structured doll "plans," (as well as being my first girl) but I know I'll get her as my next doll.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Was it gradual, like it grew on you, or did you see an amazing faceup on a certain sculpt and that made you see the true potential? Or has anyone been like me and randomly and instantly changed their mind? *_*

    2. I was never very impressed with Heliots (their facial shape is just kinda weird to me) until I saw one particular naturalistic faceup that was a real "wow"! Since then I've seen a larger variety and come to understand why they're so popular.

    3. This has happened to me lots of times. And strangely, they're all made by Volks. So safe to say, their sculpts have some sort of "evil" magic which they cast on people who doesn't like them XD

I used to totally hate a lot of their molds, mainly due to the odd combination of facial structures and the lack of symmetry. But lately I kept getting Volks dolls. the 4 sisters' head was one of those very much hated molds. Same as for F-16, etc. But I find myself wanting them badly, and constantly trolling the marketplace for possible purchases.

For me it was a very gradual process. The real turning point for me, is probably seeing very unique face-ups being achieved with the mold in question. So yes, like what you said, seeing its true potential makes me want to have it. Espcially if I can see myself do the same thing with this particular mold. Afterall, being a customizer, the ability to turn something dreadful into something wonderful is very appealing.

I can totally see myself being tomatoed by Volks' devotees....but that's just my journey through the mystical jungle of this hobby:sweat

    4. Yes! This happened to me too...I hated the way kalix sculpt promo pictures looked. My roommate said I'd like the doll when it first came out. But I told her the sculpt was not for me and I named a few things about it that I didn't like, such as the lips/nose/eyes. But once I saw owner pictures I absolutely fell in love with the sculpt, ironically, I liked everything about it, it's absolutely my favorite sculpt. Ended up buying 2 kalix in aftermarket prices. X_X;

    5. I used to absolutely despise the AoD Mo. Like, every time I saw the promo photo, I would either laugh or cringe at the thought of someone acutally buying one.

I thought this way until the other day, when I saw a used head on ebay going cheap. Now, first my thrift senses went off and I instantly wanted it. After the initial shock wore off, I decided to examine the head more, and found that as well as it being cheap, I really really liked the mold of it. Not connecting what it was, I asked the seller for a picture of the head with face up, and he sent me the Mo promo. I was shocked! How could such a nice head look...so BAD?! So, I started searching for pictures of Mo's. And discovered that, what I had previously thought to be THE UGLIEST doll on the planet had quite the potential to look good!

I bought the head ($35 after S+H) and am now anxiously awaiting it's arrival! =3 I think I'm going to be really happy with him.

    6. Notdoll SD girls-all of them. when I first saw them I wondered who could *possibly* find them attractive, with their weird mouths and the fangs on the vampire sculpts and faces that looked like they'd been hit with frying pans. I have no idea what happened, maybe it was seeing some nice custom ones, but one day it just *clicked* and I totally got why people liked them. It was completely strange and random...and now I want a Belladonna Eternity and a Ligaya Winter Eternity. XD

    7. Hominivorax: You're awesome. Vampires totally don't sparkle. I'm in a class about Vampires in Slavic Cultures, and my professor has reminded us of the nonspakliness of vampires on several occasions :3

This happened to me with Supia Rosy. I used to think she just looked mean and kinda confused, now I think she's adorable and I really want one!

As for Volks, I refuse to have opinions. Theyre too expensive for me to ever own, so it doesnt behoove me to like them :/

    8. YES definitely... I HATED the DT Estella... even up to the day I received one on my doorstep to do a faceup on... and then I started to blush her in the way the owner had asked... soft, suttle, with freckles and VOILA... I WANTED ONE... still do >.< unfortunately there are far too many on my list so she'll have to wait a few more spots before she can come home.

    9. I used to absolutely hate Migidoll Yujin. I thought he was the most unattractive doll I'd ever seen. Then I saw a picture of one painted by SDink, and my view was completely changed! Not only was Yujin no where near as unattractive as I'd always thought (quite the contrary, I now think he's a beautiful sculpt), but he was perfect for one of my characters that I'd always wanted as a doll. I'm now trying to scrape together the funds to buy him before this Migidoll ordering period ends! :aheartbea

    10. It really is amazing what difference the right facep can make. I used to think the BBB Weylin was horribly ugly...until I saw a custom faceup that made him look awesome. Now I'm tempted to buy a head to play with...

    11. I was not an initial fan of Iplehouse's EID Jessica. I'm not sure what it was, but her face often struck me wrong somehow...I was very excited that a new EID woman was coming out because I really liked the body and was hoping for a head that would suit my tastes better. Then, before Luna came out, Iplehouse released the "B" faceup for Jessica...and I love it! She looks beautiful. She's second in line on my wishlist now! I was really surprised that a new faceup was all it took to change my mind so easily. ^_^"

    12. Not a mold- just a company.
I used to think I would never get a doll from Soom. I don't know why, I just did. Now I'm putting one on my wishlist :o ! I don't know what happened, I think I was just suddenly inspired!

    13. Yes. Delf Yder used to be my least favorited Delf mold of them all. But then I saw a non-default pic from a certain person, and my heart just sort of melted for him. Or her, rather, as I now greatly desire to have a Yder girl of my own. :)

    14. yeah actually... shushu's are now one of my favorite sculpts and recently I've found a love for Hounds... Volks dolls as well... the more I see non-volks faceups on them, the more I like them (really love Suiseiseki) <3

    15. I remember not seeing the appeal Volk's molds had, especially the 4 sisters. But now I really appreciate most of the wonderfully customized molds I've seen :]

    16. So totally Leeke's Mihael. I was so turned off by his nose, his mouth and his teeny weeny eyes! (is there much of anything else on a doll's face?)

But then I saw some mods that looked really nice. And then I saw some NON-MOD faceups that managed to do justice to his head. Now I'm rolling around trying not to buy any I see on the MP or in any Leeke GOs that I enter....

    17. Yup. Back in March, when Dollfie Dream Nanoha first came out, I took one look at the promo shots, thought, "WTF, dude? She just looks WEIRD," and moved on.

Then Fate came out. It was love at first sight, even when first sight happened to be very grainy low-res magazine images that I think may have been taken with a cell phone. The more pictures I saw of her, the more in love I got.

So imagine my surprise when I found out that Fate and Nanoha have the same head mold! At first I attributed the difference to the face-up, which is part of it, but recently realized that it's Nanoha's default eyes--they're a very dark blue and do NOT photograph well most of the time. But in the few photos where those eyes look good, they look REALLY good. And now Nanoha's on the top of my wishlist. XD

UPDATE: As of November 2011, change Nanoha's status from "top of wishlist" to "officially home and even better in person." :D

    18. Yes--a lot of times what changes my mind is either seeing the doll in person, or really good owner pics with different faceups. I never would've gotten a Bobobie had I not seen some in person (now I have four), and Volks dolls never really interested me until I saw some Volks girls at a convention. I ended up getting a B&G Freya head for Cait which I would never have done if I hadn't seen one with a non-default faceup. It's not that I disliked the Freya head, I just never thought it suited her until I saw one in a different style.

    19. I used to hate pretty much all volks dolls. But I've realized that they have wonderful sculpts, but the pictures on the volks website and their default faceups really don't strike me as all that flattering. I plan on adding a few volks girlies to my wishlist soon~

    20. yes XD i used to HATE zaoll, but now i want a zaoll luv real bad!! 0.0
