Ever fall for a sculpt just because it could be the sibling of another?

Feb 6, 2015

1. So I love love LOVE Doll Chateau's dolls, and have been waffling on whether or not I want to get a DC Bella to go with my Queena. Well now it's sort of settled...surprisingly not because of anything Doll Chateau did. Instead, it's because DollLeaves released a new girl, Pepper, who looks like she could totally be a sister to my potential DC Bella~!

I mean, don't get me wrong, her fullset and faceup are stunning but it's the potential sibling-ness that really sells her to me...I might have to take both home ^^;

Has it ever happened to you that you've fallen for a sculpt (you'd otherwise have no interest in) because it looks like it could be related to one you already have or plan on? :)

2. Yes, twice, for the same sibling dynamic even!

I have a set of dolls that I'm building in both MSD and YO sizes; same characters, same personalities, everything, but two different scales. For the MSDs, they're a range of companies and sizes, but all the YOs are LittleFees. For the central character, I'd selected the Shiwoo sculpt, because it could almost have been sculpted from a picture of the character. Really, there was no other choice! So to choose his brother in LTF size, I compared blank faceplates (removing the name from any visible part of the image, to avoid any bias), looking between them to see which looked the most like Shiwoo's brother... which ended up being Chloe, a sculpt I would never have considered, being both extremely popular and intended as female. But he fits perfectly!

Similarly, at MSD scale, the central character was again a Shiwoo, and with that group, I'm pairing sculpts (head sculpts, specifically) with ethnic backgrounds, so two dolls can only share a sculptor if they're related by blood. Which meant that the character's brother again had to be a CP sculpt. I really had no idea what I was going to end up with, just that I'd likely have to split a doll to get just the head, as he needed to be taller... as luck would have it, an order I was planning matched up with last year's Sarang event, and some local friends wanted to pair up with me so we could get free shipping. The amount we ordered made us eligible for all event items, as well, and initially I'd considered taking the LTF plate, though I had no plans, but neither head was really doing anything for me... well, the other participants wanted that one, so I looked at the Sarang head again, and finally realized--he's Shiwoo's brother. Like with Chloe, he fits wonderfully (and again, like with Chloe, most Sarang owners have leaned female with the sculpt), and I'm pleased to death with him!

And there's an extra set of siblings that got into the mix, too, though only one's ordered so far. I ended up with a Little Monica Irin last year, a doll I'd never looked at from a company I'd never looked at. I initially tried to fit her in as one of the characters in the MSD family, but she didn't suit the character at all, so I gave up and reshelled that character. Because of the way I acquired Irin, I feel it would be inappropriate to sell her, so I explored her look and found her a new character... one that needs a brother. :sweat That sent me back to Little Monica, and I absolutely adore Demitri as her brother, so sooner or later he'll be coming home to me, too!

3. Wow, sounds like you got bit by quite the sibling bug lol! Maybe it'll become a slippery slope for me too xD

4. Yep! I was browsing in the MP and ran across a Volks Nono 13. Her faceup was very blushy & pink, and she looked like she could be my Rose's big sister. I actually had an old SD 13 girl body just hanging around so I bought the head :) I'd never really thought about getting Rose a sister, but this doll (now named Magnolia) was just too perfect! They look very sweet together. Normally I try to resist impulse buys like that, because they always end up back on the MP. But Magnolia is going to stick around. She has the perfect "resting bitch face" that Rose has at certain angles. It's so funny!

5. Calico, my doll family has quite a lot of sibling groups, though not all of them related by blood. XD Only two sets have the company limitations on them, though, so they've really made me look at dolls I might not otherwise have really looked at all that closely, which has really been fascinating and shown me some sculpts I never would have otherwise considered bringing home!

6. The Fairyland Elf Soony. She could easily be a big sister for my Luts Ttori Elf.

7. Yeah, I'm currently in the middle of this, haha. I'm saving up to bring a Oceanmoon Lin home, and I am veeeery slowly falling for their Eun-Ho as a possible brother for Anri. The problem is that I've limited myself to four total dolls due to both space and fund limitations, and I've fallen for Luts' SDF Eveline as well. Neither of these dolls have characters yet, though - so I don't know what I'll end up doing. @-@

8. I've wanted a FL Risse for awhile but recently got a FL Kai just because I thought they would make the perfect siblings~ And their has been other sculpts, but the Kai was really a sculpt I wasn't too interested in til I really looked at them both and was like yep I need them both~

9. So far *fingers crossed* not just because it could be a sibling, but when I first fell in love with the sculpt that would become my first purchase, the catch was this: She was one of a limited edition of two. One doll was available, and the other had already been purchased by someone in Japan who there is probably no chance of ever getting to know. But still, that feeling of "she'd have a twin somewhere out there in the world" really stuck in my heart and deepened my certainty that it was the doll I should get. But I got her blank instead. The feeling of connection between my doll and anyone else's, then, is out of the question. She *feels* like an only-child. It's one of my only two regrets about her. =_=

I bought another tiny, expecting he'd make a nice cousin of hers, a couple years older brother-sort-of look, and though the dolls look right for the part and share a nice continuity of style, I'm still trying to get a sense of connection between the two of them. It's not as strong resonating in my mind as that of the limited edition (2 in the world) sisters though.

10. Yes! I'm in the middle of it as well. I want another tiny next to my current one because she looks a bit lonely. I plan to save up later on.

11. Oh yes, when I've ordered my Lisa(Iplehouse) in grey skin I already knew that I'll be saving money for another Lisa in normal skin so they can be twin sisters, one with a dark ghostly life story and another with a normal human life...something like that,I'll work on that story when they meet...:)

Great topic by the way

12. I have four Notdoll sisters, two are complete and two are getting faceups at the moment (those two still need bodies). When I got the first one I didn't think I would be going this far but they really have a distinctive look across the sculpts so over time it became imperative that I bring the family together. The first two have distinctive personalities and I can hardly wait until the second two are done, I feel like only then will their story really be written. While sometimes I do sorta shell characters more often they only clearly get defined as they are completed and I'm spending time with them, dressing them etc. So while I can give the overview I don't think sibling dynamics will really emerge until they're all together. Which is one of the things about dolls I find interesting and exciting.

13. MeetDoll is a very small company in northern China and when I first saw their Sirius head in jeeryama's eBay store, I thought he would make an interesting girl. Then I noticed they also had a girl head, Miss UU, who had a family resemblance to Sirius, at least in my eyes. I hemmed and hawed and finally decided to get them both and have them be brother and sister. These are the only two heads that MeetDoll makes that I know of.
They are now on SpiritDoll bodies, which are a perfect match, and I've named them Felix and Fanny after the composer Felix Mendelssohn and his sister, who was also musically precocious.

14. That's basically how I pick most of my sculpts. If anything remotely resembles my main characters, they're on the list.

15. I can totally relate to this! I know it's a loooooong shot to own both SD 13 Shiro and Jun Tachibana but I would like to (in the future) when I get very very rich hahahaha. I totally love the two of them and Jun is my grail. :...(:D

16. Not siblings so much, but Parker ended up being 5Star Edmund in his final shell because he looks like a poutier version of Tumnus, whom I had used for Mikko, Parker's father.

17. Oh yes. I've fallen very hard for Theo Doll Theo at Dollmore. He looks very much like he could be the younger brother to my Leeke Koji, who I had zero intention of getting brothers for. There is a similarity in the eye and mouth shape that I find engaging, and Theo's nose looks like it would grow up to be similar to a Koji's nose.

I also fell in love with Leekeworld Min because he looks like he could be a brother to my brother's Volks Cristal. ^-^

18. Just many times.......I like to see my doll in pair, and when I got one doll, often think about his future partner! XD( and my pocket weeping......

19. Yes! I've done this several times, with varying degrees of success. Some are cross-company, some are not. It's very dangerous and expensive. LOL!

I bought the Gomidoll Idue head (right) three years ago to be a potential sibling to my Volks School A, Gavreau (left). I was always struck by their likeness, plus they are both very large heads. But I haven't done a darn thing with Idue yet!

20. Yep, that just recently happened to me with Kanadoll Adrian. He would have been perfect as my Obsidius's younger half-brother.

And they don't even really look that much alike imho, but still seemed like a sweet sibling match to me. Unfortunately I missed the pre-order period for the head, so eh. Not gonna happen probably. Still like the idea however >.<
