Evil Baha!

May 18, 2013

    1. I saw this advert for a book on the back of a magazine! Poor Baha is not pure evil! I'm quite terrified by what it says on the back of the book too:

      The Maude is outside.

      It wants to come in.

It wants to sit on your chest.

      :o

    2. Huh... I hope that is not stolen artwork. Strange cover for the book regardless, but it does grab one's attention.

    3. I contacted the author's agent out of curiousity, I'd be interested to find out why they decided to use a Baha! Also I contacted Pipos to see what they think. I hope permission was obtained from them or the owner of the doll/photograph! It's funny as I have a friend who is creeped out by my Baha and always does silly voices pretending to be a demon trapped inside her, so he found this advert very amusing!

    4. I heard back from both Pipos and the publisher, they have permission and credit Pipos on the book jacket, Pipos said they were embarassed Baha is on a thriller book as s/he is meant to be cute and fairytale! It mas made me curious to read the book though!

    5. I definitely want to read the book after seeing that cover. Thanks for sharing! :)

    6. I am SO reading that now. XD I wonder if it's available for Kindle. I'm always curious of books with dolls on them. The Pretty Little Liars books have Obitsu's purchased from Junkyspot as their cover pictures (sorry if it's a little OT but I wanted to mention it)

    7. I don't see the Baha as evil. Pensive, maybe. I think a Cheshire with that maniacal grin would've been more evil inspiring.

And slightly OT, I sent my cover artist pictures of Gunari (Lume Koit) and Misu (Obitsu Kayura) for use in the cover art of The Dragon's Muse and I am really pleased with the way it turned out. If you didn't know they were dolls, you'd likely think that somebody drew them. I have plans to send pics of some of my others dolls for another novel cover art when I'm finished writing it.

    8. I too want to read this book-I plan to get it for my Nook. I like reading thrillers, and Baha is what got me into BJDs!

    9. This is pretty cool! Poor cute Baha though … I always pictured him as a moody, melancholic character. Does Baha actually personify the "evil something" that book is about? He doesn't actually look scary on the cover photo … (So, if anyone's reading the book, please tell us which part the cat is playing ;) )
Anyway, I'm thrilled to see a BJD featured on a book cover of a non-BJD genre.

    10. Having read the entire book series this book is from....it's not really about dolls. It's a series of crime thrillers about a lone wolf detective that are pretty graphic, and you always play the fun game of "Is it a serial killer, a pedophile, or a serial killer pedophile?"

This particular book is about murders in an insane asylum.

    11. The Italian version of Looking for Alaska by John Green has a Blythe doll on it ahaha - not a BJD but I thought it was worth mentioning.
It's in one of the Vlogbrothers' videos about foreign book covers.

    12. It's interesting, I was in contact with the publisher and they found the Baha picture in a picture library and said they found it really unsettling and creepy! I tried to explain how most people who like BJDs find Baha cute and dress it in nice little outfits but she was unconvinced and said they freak her out!
Kim-thanks for your input, so is there not a small creepy doll in the actual story? I still want to read it regardless!

    13. There is a character who makes dolls of people out of cloth and pieces of hair and skin and other....things as part of his particular pathology. But no small creepy BJD like dolls at all.

    14. If they found the photo in a picture library I wonder if they have the permission of the photographer to use the image? There are pictures of dolls all over sites like Flickr, but not everyone chooses to license their photos through Getty Images and Flickr. It's Pipos' sculpt so if they have permission from them that's great, but the actual picture (styling, pose, overall image etc etc) is still copyright to the photographer and using their work commercially usually requires the photographer's permission too.

    15. The publisher said they contacted the photographer first and asked for permission which was granted, also Pipos said that it was the owner of the doll who contacted them before the publisher so I'm pretty sure it's all above board!

    16. That's good to know :) I wonder if Pipos and the photographer are credited inside the book jacket? How cool would that be?!

    17. Haha, I saw this book while I was out shopping the other day... I was like o_________o Pipos on a book?! It made me laugh though, because a Baha isn't very "evil" looking; I think Cheshire would've been a more suitable doll to use~ XD

    18. I think it'd be amazing as a photographer to be credited in a published book! I think that the 'evil' aspect is all in the editing. That said, I know people outside the BJD hobby that find all my dolls 'creepy'. So I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

    19. They said that Pipos would be credited in the 2nd print of the book!

    20. I have a drawing on a book, copyrights is the first thing professionals discuss. The name credit is usually on the inside cover, or the second leaf/page with all the book info and publisher names. In ebook form, it's usually at the front or the very bottom.

I would think the Chesire would have been creepier! LOL And the myth of cats sleeping on peoples' chest has some truth to it. They don't steal your soul, they just accidently smother you. It's why cats shouldn't be allowed near infants. People usually associate the myths/urban legends with the cats rather than the facts. :I

This sounds like a good book series though!
