Face-up on your First doll; Brave Enough?

Aug 7, 2007

?
1. Yeah, I would do it.

2. Nah, i'm too nervous.

3. I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up.

4. The Default always looks the best anyway.

1. I ask because it's actually something i'm gonna do. (If this subject already exists, go ahead and erase it.)

I plan on getting my first doll soon, i'm about 3/4 there in my savings, and i plan to do the face up myself. He will be my first doll and i've seen a bunch of tutorials and videos on how to do the face up and honestly it doesn't look that hard. Plus i feel i'm a bit handy and artsy and can keep a steady hand. I'm wondering how many of you feel the same would consider doing the face up yourself for your very first doll. (hypothetically or not) XD

Go ahead and tell me what you think.

2. Noooo way lol

Im way to nervous!

3. I am also too nervous, but i might practise a little and try again on my 3rd or 4th doll.

I'd rather learn more than mess up my first doll.

4. Once you jump in and do it, you'll be fine( and just remember you can always wipe it off). I remember the first one I ever did, and it took me a while to pluck up courage, but I started with the eyebrows and they turned out fine, so it was much easier after that.A good starting tip is, to make sure your pencils have very sharp tips, and if you do make a mistake get an eraser and dab at the pencil and it will come off. Also, check your eyebrows are even by holding the face up to a mirror. GOOD LUCK!:)

5. I actually was always planning on doing my first dolls faceup (faceup was in the basic set back then) i really disliked the faceup..trew off her whole character.
But i have sculpted and drawn like..my whole life (painted sculpts as well so..gave me +3 exp XB)

You just need to read walk troughs/tutorials allot..
and not just one.
Most of them have good things and things that just don't work for everyone in them..but may be done different in other tutorials.

You also need to make sure you have the right supply's or it could ruin you're doll. (acryl sealer has resin eating products in it sometimes!!!)

Doing a faceup you're self..or getting a custom faceup makes a doll feel way more like your own.
Because it's the only doll like that out there.
If you can't successfully make a dolls face like you want it to,
you can always commission an artist to do it for you after you tried you're self.

There are allot of great artist on the marketplace that have small prices and do great things ;3

You will be suprised.. it takes me about 4-6 hours and ive done about 60-70 faceups by now.
(..but then again i need to have everything perfect >_< )

6. Well, I had posted a thread that was similar, but it was sort of worded differently. Also, mine wasn't a poll :P

Anyway, upon looking through the forums (and various tutorials and what have you), I got myself all excited :P So, I want to do the face-up on my first doll. I don't like the default, and from what I hear, Luts isn't doing custom face-ups anymore. So, I plan to do what Naiara recommended. I'll give it a try, and if I don't get it the way I want on the first try (or second...or third...), then I'll just send it off to a face-up artist and have them do it for me.

I can't say that it looks easy. I'm sure I'll end up screwing something up at some point :sweat But I'm the kind of artist that likes to dabble in anything I can get my hands on (even if I'm not immediately good at it). So this, to me, is just another new artistic endeavor :kitty2

7. I did. So I bought a doll without a face-up (you don't have to wait so long if you buy one without, so that was a plus too!) and did the face-up. I new that it wouldn't be spectacular, even ugly, because I'd never done that before and I never even held a brush in my hand before.

But practice makes perfect (enough) and the big advantage is that you can create a face that fits the character perfectly. There are many good tutorials around (I personally like the tutorial Helene made), so it's not like you're completely on your own.

8. It's always worth a shot. Even if you totally bunk it, it comes off easily and you can commission someone once you have the cash.

Heck, it's even part of the fun. You have a blank doll and a character in mind, and you can control what happens. Who knows, maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who can do all your own dolls faceups. And, again, if you bunk it, you'll probably have a much clearer head about what you want when you get the money to pay someone else to do it.

I have dolls in my possession that are blank. I know I can't afford the artists I truly want to faceup my dolls (hello, Shoofy. :) ) and I've decided to sit myself down and give it a whirl. It doesn't hurt anything. It may be intimidating if it's your only doll, or your first doll. But why should it remain intimidating? It's not like it's totally unfixable.

If it were permanent, I'd be all for the stop signs. But it isn't. With proper preparations, it's a mistake that's easily fixed. Go for it, the only thing at risk is your pride.

As far as faceupping my personal, very own first doll? Hm. I'd give it a go. The only reason why I didn't attempt to faceup my own Agentha (Elfdoll Sooah), is that she had a faceup when I bought her that I loved. I had the money for that faceup, and while it's only a default, I'm amazingly fond of it. She's fading now, and I know intellectually I will have to send her out soon. When that time comes, I'll wipe her and try it myself. I will probably make her look horrible at first, but I will totally try.

It's intimidating when it's your first and only, especially if you have no previous artistic bent. But that's natural, and when you can realize how much of a nonissue totally crapping out really is... well. It's all good, isn't it?

9. if i was only skilled enough. i'd do it myself :(

10. I have voted "I would but I think the default or someone else could do better than anything I could think up. " cause I always had wonderful ideas in my mind but I am not so skilled to put them in reality. So I have asked for a custom make up from a talented artist for my very first doll ^_^ (and now my preference is still for custom make up done by artists or for custom make up done by the doll company... default one too, if well done! ^_^)

11. i was so excited! but actually i didn't have another choice.. the default was expensive.. so i decided to give it a shot

12. I had to. His default faceup chipped in several places so I was going to coat over it and touch up the chips. Except being a newb at the time, I sprayed too close and it melted his beautiful faceup off. :...(

13. I would be so shakey, too scared to do it myself. After all, I dont want to ruin him :(

14. I already started, but I was so nervous that I just did the lips.
They look fine, but I´m still very scared of drawing the eyebrows or that I could use the wrong materials. Tommorow, I´ll probably do the rest.

15. It's fun!

I went all out with my boy, and I'd never seen a ABJD in real life before I got him. He's a hybrid with a severe resin mismatch, so I not only had to do his faceup (which I'd planned for) I had to darken the whole head to match the body. But I'm another with an artsy background, the only thing I had to buy was the sealer (doesn't mean that was the only thing I did buy of course). But then, one of my initial reactions to learning of ABJDs was "What a cool new canvas."

Unfortunately, I'm now addicted to doing faceups but only have the one head, so in the four months I've had him he's had as many faceups. And I'll be redoing it again as soon as the weather cooperates.

16. It's easier than you'd think... I was nervous too because it was my first doll... But then I did the faceup and I had fun. The first faceup was kind of lame  but it didn't RUIN the doll, I just wiped it off a few days later and it was fine! So relax! It will be fine :thumbup

Like everything in life it get's better with practice, my second one was a million times better and as we go along we learn a few tricks and have fun :)

17. I'm unsure how to answer the poll, but I will say that I was way too nervous when I got my first dolls to even think about doing something like that, but it's been about a year now, and I know eventually it will come to needing to redo their faceups for a few different reasons, and I am determined to do it myself. I'm still nervous, but I feel better about learning the skill and being able to do it, and if I mess up, the faceup was coming off anyway and I can keep trying until I get it. It'll be a challenge, but if you feel you want to try your artistic hand at it, I say go for it - that's what I'm going to do.

18. I absolutely love the default face-up on the one I'm getting, and even though I do paint and draw and all that constantly, I don't think I could ever do it to my first boy. He's too beautiful and perfect for that.

Maybe someday. If I get more dolls, I will probably try on them, or I might eventually try to darken mine's eyeliner. (I like dark, really heavy eyeliner on male dolls.) We'll see. But I'm really too nervous - he's so pretty, I don't want to ruin him.

19. Jump into the face-up pool and do it! Doing face-ups is so much fun! My first face-up wasn't even my own doll. The face she wanted turned out really good. Unfortunatly, I don't know if she is here on DoA, so I can't ask her for pictures of the head. I will tell you this though, all the people that were there loved the face.

20. I'm way too nervous to do my first doll face up. But after some time past as I notice her face up start to fade, I only take my gut out to give her some blushing only. When I got my second doll, I only dare to give her face up.

Well doing face up is really fun like other said. As long as ya hand ain't that shakey or ya can handle it then would be fine. xD Hahaha... good luck with your first dollie!
