Floating head or headless body?

May 30, 2014

    1. Would you rather buy a gorgeous head and save up for the body later, or buy the perfect body first and find a head for it later?

Sort of the situation I'm in...can't decide whether to just buy a head and buy the body I actually want later or not.

    2. It seems like you're going for a hybrid? It might be better to get the head first since the head is the "soul" of the doll and the most important part. Sometimes, the head sculpt is bigger or smaller than what you had imagined and if you buy the body first and it doesn't fit, you really are stuck with a useless body which costs a lot more than the head.
If you have other bodies, or know other people with bodies, you can try them on for size to see what fits best.

I don't exactly speak from experience, just that when my floating head arrived, he was way bigger than I had imagined and it was a good thing that I had other bodies on hand to try him for size. He actually fit well on them so this saved me from getting another body I had planned for him, which incidentally wouldn't have fit at all.

    3. I do buy gorgeous heads then bodies later. The only time I didn't do this was when I bought and F60 body, but it was only for sale for a limited time. Bodies are expensive, and a head can look really pretty on its own with a faceup, eyes and a wig. A body on its own just looks peculiar.

    4. I've gone both ways with this. For my Elfdoll Rita/Mirodoll hybrid, I bought the body first because it happened to go on 40% off sale and I wanted to take advantage of that. The upside to body first is that I was able to make her some clothes while I saved up for the head, since I had the body to fit them on while I sewed. That worked in that case because I already had my specific head/body combo planned, at the time the Rita head was still a basic item I could order from Elfdoll whenever, and I had seen enough owner pics to know that Elfdoll/Mirodoll hybrids were a good match in color and fit.
I have an Iplehouse KID Lisa head in gray skin that I bought from the DoA MP, and since Iplehouse heads aren't easy to come by separately and I had no idea what body I wanted to put her on anyway, i just grabbed her and figured out the body afterwards. (I've since ordered her a body but am still waiting for it to arrive.... hopefully I'll be able to put her together by this summer! )

    5. Head. A body can always be found later but the right head at the right time that's more important IMHO.

    6. I also get the head first. Right now my floating bjd head still has no body. Ha ha ha. :XD: Anyways, sometime the event that release limited head will be available for only limited of time so why not get the head first? The body can come later on anytime. :aheartbea

    7. Besides the mentioned points above, I allways get the urge to buy a head, If I have a body without one. The other way around is tolerable enough.
If I had a concreat doll plan, then yes, I'd buy wichever one of the two suits me first, but if it's only going to be a body for the moment, then no. Only being a head, yes.

    8. Personally I'm a head first kinda guy, if the right head comes along with the perfect face up then absolutely. Also heads are easier to store!
But saying that I personally like to buy complete dolls. Just my preference!

    9. Yeah, head purchases usually come first. But the bodies tend to pile up when the intended match doesn't work. I've played "musical heads" more than once. Unless there's a neck problem, at least color matching works better if you only have to blush a head, not a body. (But oh, those floating heads bought with faceups you don't want to remove -- problem pieces!)

    10. I normally buy a head first, since I'm not as picky about bodies. I have bought a body first though, usually if I get offered one in a trade, or find a really great deal I just can't pass up!

    11. I would say that if both are available, then to go for the one that is harder to come by.

There are pros and cons to either choice.
I think there has been a lot of good advice for getting the head first. So just to think on the other side…in the instance that you have a body first, and if you are purchasing a head without a faceup, there is the bonus that you don't have to worry about resin matching quite so much because you can match the head to the body in the faceup. That gives you more choice in bodies.

    12. Thank you so much for your advice, everyone!

    13. when i make my first hybrid, i'm pretty sure that there wouldn't be any other way for me to go about it besides diving in... head first.
Jokes aside, I think i'd prefer to have a head to a body. Heads can make good props or can temporarily share a body with another doll, if needed. I had a DD that was headless for a little while and it just felt.... weird. This is just my personal opinion, though

    14. Too many floating heads just now. I actually prefer to have separate bodies for each head, and bodies that are different enough to recognize at a glance which support the style of the head-- but that's not what I've been doing. The heads were on sale! Who can resist something you've wanted for three years, and wanted it so badly your molars hurt? And of course the other issue that arises, if you let it wait long enough, is that you can have a hard time finding a resin match in the doy (especially for an unusual resin color) and you may struggle to find a size match in the right style of body.

    15. I'd always go for the head! The head is where their personality really comes out. I'd always judge them by the facial features, the body would always come second. Plus at least heads don't take too much storage space while you're looking for a body. So heads first, I'd say! Unless, of course, you have hundreds of disembodied heads with no bodies to put them on...

    16. I've done both. :) it all depends on the timing and funds for me.

    17. i only have one floating head, and the reason i purchased it is because it was my only chance at getting the sculpt i wanted. it's migidoll LE miho vampire, sold out at the time. i knew he had to be my character and no other, i am so happy i found one at the market, brand new. since now the problem of the sculpt has been taken care of, he is waiting patiently in his package until i have the funds for a body, basically he has to get back in line as i continue to go down the list in the order i had established originally for purchasing the remaining dolls. since i already have the so desired precious head, there's no rush in getting the body ^_^ also, probably the only head i'd ever buy. i have most of the limited dolls that i want and the other remaining 2 have to come home whole.

    18. I've only bought one separate head so far, but I think buying the head first is best. I'd rather get the head and find a few bodies I like, but don't match than have a body where the heads I like won't match it.

    19. I always end up buying heads first, then finding bodies later if I'm on a budget. In order to buy a body without a head, I would need to have a plan in mind for what I would use it for, and a head picked out for it. Right now, I have two floating heads, and I bought them because I saw them on the MP and really liked the faceups on them. I know what bodies I will be getting, but I'm okay with waiting to get those. I agree with yuan_mdx, and feel that the head is the "soul" of the doll. It shows the personality of the doll, so it's the part that I focus on if I'm doing a hybrid or piecing together a doll.

    20. I tend to fall for faces, so I end up having to find bodies for floating heads. Somehow, having just the heads lying about doesn't bother me, while just the body would feel slightly creepy?
