Floating heads at Meetups - Creepy or informative?

Jan 7, 2013

    1. I've been to many doll meetups and it seems at least one person had a floating head with them. I have several floating heads/heads that share a body, but it never occurred to me to bring just a head to a meet up unless someone wanted to see it and asked me to bring it.

For those of you who have been to a meetup and seen the odd floating head sitting in another dolls lap; Did you think it was creepy/weird, or did you enjoy looking at the sculpt anyway?

For those of you who have brought a floating head to a meetup; What were your thoughts/reason for deciding to bring him/her?

In no way am I saying that you shouldn't bring a floating head to show off it off, I'm just curious as it has never passed my mind as I only like to show off "finished" dolls.

    2. Eh I didn't care if it was weird, I brought a beautiful Dreaming Lishe head to a meet up once and was flooded with compliments. I was just entering the doll hobby and a lot of people thought it had a very nice face up on the doll and ask me if I have hybriding plans, etc. (I only brought it out when people asked me if I had any dolls/doll plans.) I left early though because I wasn't going to have my floating head floating around all day, plus I found it kind of "too much" for me once more extreme people showed up. Idk why I did it, probably because I had nothing else to do at AWA and I was excited to see some of my favorite molds in person.

    3. I have been to meets where there were floating heads around (sometimes brought, sometime on display by the meet organiser)
And i have to say that i like to see the loose heads, It is a good opportunity to see sculpts.
And when the heads are still blank they are great to use for Resin comparing, looking at mold without face up, trying out on bodies.

So yes I like seeing floating heads at meetings.

    4. [laughs] My poor little AE floater had a silver ring box with a velvet cushion to sit in and be creepy. I think floating heads are sort of imaginative.

      Granted, I haven't been to a meetup, but I think they're fine.

    5. I think it's fine! It's a great way to see a sculpt in person you might have only seen online before, and to compare with bodies etc, if you are thinking of hybridizing.

I think it's amusing to see dolls with their body-less friends' heads in their laps. We're just funny like that, bjd collectors!

    6. I've been to meetups when people brought floating heads, but it was usually because the owner had just purchased it or wanted to resin-match. Meetups are a great opportunity to figure out what body to put a head on and to see new faceups. So while I may not bring a floating head to a meet, I'm glad to see them there as it's even more sculpts to admire.

    7. I'd say informative - people like to see new/different sculpts after all! And it can be useful for the head-owner as well if they're looking for body size/colour matching help.

I can't even imagine why it would be creepy.

    8. I love the chance to see new and different sculpts in person, so I'm all for floating heads at meets! I don't think it's creepy at all... I mean, I have one at home and no real plans to get him a body of his own for a long time, so it would be silly of me to be creeped out by someone else's.

When my boy (and his attendant floating head) first arrived, I did bring them both to my first meet up as a doll owner. Moz mostly stayed in the box except to come out and be shown around briefly-- having neither body nor faceup, I didn't bother setting him out on Vince's lap during the whole meet. Since then, he's had a turn on Vince's body to come as well, after he did get a faceup. I might bring him along again sometime just as a head, because there are new people in the group and he deserves a chance to be seen now and again as much as anybody... (well, as much as any doll/head can be said to 'deserve' anything)

    9. I've seen heads floating around at meetups when artists deliver a finished paintjob to a buyer, or want to test-drive the faceup, or the owner wants to resin-match a blank head, or whatever. Nothing unusual about doll-parts being passed around at a doll-meet, as far as I'm concerned.

And sometimes, floating heads are there for us to fall in love with... SDink's Evan-in-a-teacup stole every heart who dared a sip of his beauty that day! <3

    10. To me it's informative. I've brought a floating head once to a meetup in order to see some resin and body matches. It also helps for others who just want to see a certain sculpt w/o having to bring/carry the whole doll. Most of the time I'm just interested in seeing the scult/head anyways!

    11. I think it's fun and informative.

Well, I used to be a little put off by floating heads and headless bodies, but I don't care as much now.

    12. They usually don't do much for me... but I've seen a few floating heads that are just amazing!

    13. Definitely informative. It is a lot easier to bring a lot of heads and one body than it is to bring a lot of dolls, especially larger ones.

      This is creepy:

    14. There are regularly floating heads at our local meetups. So far as I am aware, a lot of our members like seeing them, and several of us are willing to let floating heads borrow a body (usually creating a new floating head for the meet) if the person is looking for a good body for their head to hybrid it. It can be a lot of fun to have floating heads at a meet, too.

    15. ... Yo-SD Tony :mwahaha

    16. Actually, it is Yo-Tenshi Tony

This was before his head exchange at Volks and him getting his own body. There, he is being "angry" that I bought a Tenshi Mika before finishing him.　It only took a year and a half to complete him...

But, gosh, I would LOVE to see a YoSD Tony! :D

    17. I brought my floating Elfdoll Yuan head to a meet last weekend because ... I don't really know. She and my IH Stella are all I have at the moment, and I just packed the head on a whim, even though it ended up staying in the box except for one demonstration.

    18. Of all the meets I've been to, I think someone brought a floating head twice. I didn't really bother to ask or find out why, it just seemed kind of pointless, since it didn't travel bodies or was being used for resin matching. It was just there. And though it's not really that huge of a deal, it's up there with people who bring Monster High dolls to BJD meets. Just...why?

    19. I may bring one with me one day but I would only be using it for resin and body matching. Apart from that I would keep it in my bag and just show my whole dolls at a meetup.

    20. I have seen floating heads, and brought them. I don't want to take pictures of my dolls with the floating heads, as I prefer most of my doll pix to look realistic and a random head kind of prevents that. :sweat But I think it's a great idea if you're trying to resin match or size match! Someone might have a perfect match that you didn't even consider.
