Frankensteining your dream doll

Sep 25, 2012

    1. Sorry for the super random title, but I will explain!

Let's say you want a doll, a super limited doll that no way you will have money to buy it, perhaps it's even longer sold out.

Would you ever consider a Frankenstein ''short-cut'' for your dream doll? Perhaps you could buy only the head of the doll and attach it to another not so expensive body? If you, for example, fell in love with a fantasy doll, would you consider buying only the fantasy parts and putting it in another doll?

I'm not talking about plain hybridizing, it's more something related to ''making a doll look like some other doll ''.

(( Keep in mind, I'm not talking about recasting on any sort of way!!! ))

I'm sorry this sounds random, I guess I have too much free time to think nonsense.

And, no, I'm not considering doing this. I'm too afraid to even restring my dolls, let alone change body parts.

    2. I have never considered doing this to make a cheaper version of a dream doll (I do prefer to get the real dream doll instead, please xD). But I have done some "frankensteining short-cut" to complete a special doll idea, my male Warhammer Daemonette cosplay doll - I actually planned a (long sold-out) Bix crab claw for him but settled for a Tremo wing part which looks enough like a crab or mantis claw to work.

    3. ... How is that not "hybridizing"? If you're mixing heads and bodies and bodyparts from different dolls, it's a hybrid.

And people do indeed make dream-doll hybrids all the time, yes.... Especially if it's an LE head for which they couldn't get the original body/limbs/whatever. You see that every day.

    4. I missed out on the Shining Blade Sakuya Dollfie Dream earlier, and I decided to just buy her head and attach it to a DD II body. Doing this saved me a little bit of money and I don't have to sell the items that came with her full set. I didn't really want or need them since she will be my original character.

    5. I didn't say it was not hybridizing, just that the main point was not to simple mix and match body parts, but rather try to 'copy' a look. It's specific.

There's a difference between simply hybridizing, and hybridizing to mimic another doll, that's my point.

    6. Err... I don't think I've ever met anyone who deliberately mimics other dolls. What did you have in mind, someone dismantling a Soom MD to stick the wings, feet, horns and hands onto a Bobobie just because they can't afford a Soom full doll? :? Basically I don't understand your point. How could you "mimic" another doll? If I bought some vamp hands made by Dollpire and attached them to my Delf, technically he's a frankendolly (but only if he had several other parts from other companies) but I certainly wouldn't be out to "mimic" anything. It's just those parts help me to create a look I'm going for. Frankendollies are just super-hybrids, that's all.

I myself have a frankendoll with his head, body and hands all from different companies, but if you told me I was "trying to make him look like some other doll" I'd tell you to sit and swivel. Yeah, I saved money that way - the body I wanted was cheaper than his default body - but that wasn't why I chose it. It was the right body for him, and its being cheaper was just a bonus. Hang around in this hobby a bit and you'll see that most people are trying to recreate in resin an idea from their own heads, rather than "copying" anything.

    7. I agree with JennyNemesis and Harlequin-Elle. LOTS of people create hybrids/frankendollies and they do it for MANY reasons.

      1. they simply don't like certain parts from the company. Like my Loki. DZ Mo head, but hate the DZ body. So he got a Doll Leaves body, but hated their hands. So he has AoD hands.

      2. They want a specific doll that is no longer available and might find parts on the MP to create a hybrid instead. I think this is what you are asking, if I understand correctly. Maybe they can't get an older limited doll, so they buy a similar body, all the fantasy parts, etc, get a similar faceup, try to make something similar to the one that got away.

      3. Cost. Maybe your dream doll is very expensive or hard to get, so you buy just the head and put it on a cheaper body.

      4. To get a certain look for a certain character (original or not). My Matt is an Iplehouse Mars head, perfect sculpt for the character, but the Iplehouse body is far too tall and muscular for my little body, so he'll be getting something thinner and shorter.

I'm sure there are more reasons, but these are the main ones I can think of.

    8. i read the title and totally thought it was about the ringdoll frankenstein WHICH IS MY DREAM DOLL HOLYCRUD D:

but id totally buy parts to piece together a dream doll. getting it one bit at a time or even mismatching pieces as long as the resin color/texture was similar. id be cool with it.

    9. I 'frankendolled' my Chrom. I didn't want one until long after his release, so by then owners had sold off all his extras. I have a head from the US, but his body came from Brazil four months later. Just this summer, I found a pair of jointed hands from the same batch year, but they were strangely not a color match, so I dyed them. He's a Chrom through and through, but not the same as if I'd bought one from the company. In the case of the Soom fantasy dolls, I've heard lots of other stories about people taking years to collect all the pieces of the particular doll they wanted. It's still a sort of frankensteining, because they're not ever the same as the original release, even though it's really close.

    10. I did something like that with my Soom Euclase. I didn't have to resort to bits and pieces that didn't belong to the original, though. I bought the OE head, faceup, eyes, human body and wig from one person. I bought the fantasy legs from another person. I bought the outfit from another. I bought the accessories from another...

It was a LOT of time and effort, searching the Marketplace day after day and making the deals... SO much more effort than buying from Soom and not cheaper! But I'd missed the sale period and then decided I needed to have him.

I pretty much had the fullset minus the Meditation Head, which I wasn't interested in having anyway.

I'm sure there are people who have tried to re-create a grail doll from various parts when they couldn't get a hold of the original... It would be interesting to hear from therm...

    11. I definitely considered this! Volks MSD Hisui was my very first dream doll and they phased her out a couple of years ago. At first I was heartbroken, then I decided to be brave and attempt to do the most extreme mod job I would ever do. I decided that I would adopt another Volks MSD with facial structure that was similar enough to Hisui's so that I would be doing very minimal modding.

That was before I got access to the DoA Marketplace, and found a complete Hisui right here. XD
Now I'm waiting for Hisui, and Myu, the sculpt I was considering modding. I fell in love with her sculpt too, so I just went ahead and adopted her. :P

    12. I think if there was a doll that I wanted desperately that wasn't available anymore except in bits and pieces, I'd probably do something like this- though it wouldn't be to cut costs, it would be to try and create my dream doll using the only options available.

    13. If I could find a second-hand Littlefee Pongpong, my plans would be set in motion. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anyone in all of creation that would want to sell that little darling:(

    14. I sort of had to do that.

I wanted an SD17 white skin F38 but Volks has never made a white SD17 boy and I waited a few years for them to make one so I could buy the Full Set for the sake of the body. Tired of waiting, I got the head in a split and bought a white skin Majesty18 body from Aria as it was the closest resemblance to the SD17 and made my own "SD17" F38.

    15. Delightful Muse- LittleFee Pongpong is also available as a basic, so you can still get him even if the fullset's sold out. :)

    16. I guess I've kind of done this, or at least as far as I understand the question (still not entirely sure what you mean by making a hybrid to mimic another doll, though).

When Luts released Senior Delf Dion the second time, I didn't have enough money to buy the whole doll (and he sold out in about ten minutes so no chance of saving up for him) so I split it with someone else who wanted the body, then got him an Iplehouse YID body later. I wasn't too cut up about it though because the way the Senior Delf body looks isn't my kind of thing, so I was able to get my dream doll (well, doll head) and have him on a body I preferred, too.

    17. Hm, I'm not really hybridizing to mimic a certain doll, but rather because I don't like the look of the original and have different ideas for the body type. Also my hybrids almost inevitably end up costing more than the original full doll would have cost :sweat
