1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Hallyu and Korean BJDs - Flower Boys and Common Ground?

Feb 18, 2014

    1. I know there are threads linking BJDs and anime, so I wanted to explore any links between (specifically) Korean BJDs and Hallyu (Korean Wave) culture ... e.g. K-pop and Korean drama ... particularly as regards the Flower Boy phenomenon.

      1. If you are a Hallyu fan and a collector of Korean BJDs, which came first? Or are the two fandoms unrelated?

      2. If you are a Hallyu fan, have you looked for sculpts that resembled Korean musicians or actors?

      3. Have you modded/costumed sculpts to look like Korean musicians or actors?

      4. Do you think the Flower Boy phenomenon in Korean has influenced the aesthetic of male BJDs made in Korea?

To answer my own questions, all of my dolls are from Korean companies (Souldoll, Iplehouse, Dollmore), but just because. My own descent into Hallyu madness happened independently (and after) my descent into BJD madness.

That said, now that I am more familiar with Hallyu, I would love to own dolls that looked like Hyun Bin, Gong Yoo, Yoon Shi-Yoon, and while I'm being greedy, Andy and Jun Jin from Shinhwa (I know Souldoll did a Minwoo doll a few years back, and I'm sad they didn't continue with the rest of the band). I keep looking for the right sculpts, but haven't stumbled on them yet.

re: Flower Boys, I'm not educated enough to guess whether that was an influence on the aesthetic, but I think that buyers who love the Flower Boy aesthetic would be drawn toward the same aesthetic in the BJDs they purchase.

    2. I mentioned in another thread when someone said they had a desire for a certain doll.. but I do have one on my wishlist that reminds me A LOT of Luhan from Exo and I would get it based solely on that fact. ;) It isn't, however, a priority for me at this point.

Although I totally echo the desire for a Yoon Shi-Yoon doll... Ooo that would be nice...

    3. Oh! Which doll?

Back because I wanted to touch on the Flower Boy aesthetic but it inexplicably slipped my mind yesterday.

    4. 1. If you are a Hallyu fan and a collector of Korean BJDs, which came first? Or are the two fandoms unrelated?
They are unrelated for me, it's like two different hobbies.

      2. If you are a Hallyu fan, have you looked for sculpts that resembled Korean musicians or actors?
I kind of did, a little, for a while, but right now not anymore. I did however recognize some sculpts looking like they are inspired by Korean idols. SOOM Beryl looks like KARA Seungyeon, SOOM Cass looks like KARA Gyuri.

      3. Have you modded/costumed sculpts to look like Korean musicians or actors?
I think I might costumed them just for fun.

      4. Do you think the Flower Boy phenomenon in Korean has influenced the aesthetic of male BJDs made in Korea?
Definitely. That's why a lot of them are not that manly man sculpts, not that I'm complaining ;)

    5. 1. If you are a Hallyu fan and a collector of Korean BJDs, which came first? Or are the two fandoms unrelated?
I was first a BJD collector then I got into kpop on 21 Jume 2009. As Super Junior Sungmin was my bias, I had to mod a doll to look like him. Other than that and dolly clothes style, I don't think both fandoms are related.

      2. If you are a Hallyu fan, have you looked for sculpts that resembled Korean musicians or actors?
All the time. I modded a Yaoyue into my MiniSungmin. I wish to find a suitable doll for EXO Kris and Chanyeol

      3. Have you modded/costumed sculpts to look like Korean musicians or actors?
      See 1 and 2

      4. Do you think the Flower Boy phenomenon in Korean has influenced the aesthetic of male BJDs made in Korea?
I will have to say it depends on the company. I am very sure ninodoll is influenced by some of kpop's prettiest boys.
However I feel that the aesthetic style of bjds are more towards anime than flower boys.
