Has owning a Doll inspired you?

Jan 7, 2013

    1. As a first year doll owner I can say that owning my doll has inspired me to learn a great many things, I have learned how to sew better, how to clean and care for him, what I like about him and what I don't and what I'd like to see in my next doll(s). He has also inspired me to learn how to do face-ups, make wigs, and whole host of things I never considered making before, even writing a story about him and perhaps a future doll! So my question to you is, what if anything has your doll inspired you to create or perhaps learn how to do? Also has the love and ownership of your doll created a whole set of sub skills for you?

    2. BJDs sparked an interest in sewing for me. I've always wanted to learn how to make clothes but having a BJD gave me the motivation to start really sewing. I'm still not very good at it but I keep trying.

    3. From having to do their faces and make their clothes to learning to draft my own patterns, rooting, and making my own dolls I don't think they've had any affects on me.

    4. Beside things like faceups and making doll clothing that are directly connected to dolls, I am teaching myself to do embroidery

    5. Not really, no. Everything I'm doing now - knitting, sewing, writing, "face-painting" - I was already doing, more or less, before I got my first doll (if you kinda equal "face-painting" with "drawing", that is). Especially true for writing.

    6. There were two dolls I own now that have inspired me to start my own company: both Gomidoll Iru-HS and Distant Memory Peroth were 'amateur' artist dolls. They made me realize that I could make my own dolls if I really wanted to. And here I am!

Without these two BJD's, I wouldn't have dared to start sculpting.

    7. My dolls have definitely jump-started my sewing-- for me, it's easier to practice on a small scale! If I was sewing for myself, it would be much more expensive and time consuming, and if I lost or gained weight, I might even need to redo a portion of that work!

I do have plans to make some things for myself in future, since sometimes it's hard to find nice things I like in sizes to fit me, but I'd be starting out at a complete loss if I didn't have my dolls to practice with. (of course, I'd be doing more machine and less hand sewing making a human-sized outfit... but for now, a little hand-sewing now and then can be a relaxing hobby, anyway)

    8. Oh, definitely. As a consequence of building a character for a doll? I ultimately wound up deciding that at some point I need to seriously sit down and try to learn some Chinese.

On top of that, I also sew for my dolls sometimes. :3c

    9. It's inspired me to do more things with hair. Granted, I've only done research so far and got a wig for the purpose, but I plan on braiding it very soon. I've never done anything like this before.

I might also might try other styling things in the future.

I keep getting the urge to sew something! One step at a time.

    10. Nope. Sometimes I see someine else's and feel the urge to paint or otherwise create, so I guess that's inspiration, but nothing ever really comes from it and they aren't my dolls.

    11. I know that owning has inspired me to work harder, and to learn how to take better care of them. Theres a sense of pride and satisfaction in me when I see my dolls.

    12. Actually, yes. The biggest inspiration I can think of is diving into photography. Before them I'd dabbled in it like most people do, but when I got my first doll, I got my first DSLR and realized how much I love it.

Now I go to college for it. Even though I've been expanding my horizons and trying to find my niche, they're always the subjects I go back to. :aheartbea

    13. Yes.

First, I was inspired to "play" by changing up clothes and wigs.

Then, I was inspired to send my doll heads away to become unique and one of a kind.

After that, I was inspired to take photos and then edit them.

Next, I was inspired to travel around my country of residence with my doll for photo opportunities.

Now, I am inspired to sew. I even very recently completed my own modification on a head.

I think collecting BJDs is the perfect hobby. It is expensive, but it is also so inspiring and it is so easy to find new ways to enjoy dolls with a little creativity.

    14. My doll inspired to draw more better and I will do my first time face up for my upcoming doll

    15. I'd say owning a doll has inspired me a lot.
not that I'm doing anything I haven't done before (apart from faceups XD) my boys and girl inspire me to create various designs for them, and sew a lot more than before. They also inspired me to do some old hobbies of mine again. like knitting and embroidery or handcrafts in general. I used to love doing those a lot as a kid before I became a victim of the internet and the digital age, lol. XD

    16. Dolls inspire my artwork. Joints are a pleasure to draw and doll clothes give me infinite ideas. Took up knitting too.

    17. YES! I am making more photos than ever before, I knit and crochet more creative, before I used more finished patterns, now I make almost all by my self, I am working with a book with words and pictures for children... and I find dolls with special sized I can make clothes for to frineds on internet/dollforums so we can use each others competance when it is not everything we can buy from stores. And trust me, I never thought a sock could be a wonderfull dress before I had a msd girl in my hands.

    18. I love making sock clothing! And yes I agree, I never looked at those brightly colored, printed socks the way I do now, before I had my Dolls. Effective, affordable sewing project with nearly 100% chance of awesome! :D

    19. My dolls have inspired me to create a whole world and story for them which I share with my best friend who I also got in the hobby. I've painted pictures of them -technically not something new but I've never done charcoal and graphite studies on doll joints of all things in the past-. I learned how to sew better, how to paint faceups and was motivated to get a camera and start learning the fundamentals of photography.

Last but not least the doll I'm saving for now has inspired me to learn how to sculpt miniature food and make appropriately sized props for him since his character carries a bag with all sorts of goods in it and props for MSDs like the kind I want are quite hard to find.

    20. LOL, I can teach you some Chinese as I am a Chinese myself:D
