has your taste / style changed since you started this hobby?

Mar 22, 2013

    1. sorry if this has been asked, i did a search but couldnt find anything

i started collecting bjd's many years back and when i look at the dolls i first started with and the dolls i have now i saw my taste and style had changed over the years. im just starting to return back from a break in collecting which is most likely what made me aware more so of my change. i was wondering if this had happened to others too?

my first bjd's i had intended to dress them very modern, in the same clothes i would wear and buy for myself, jeans hoodies skirts tops trainners etc. i did this to start with but then i started to buy more lace outfits, they were mostly black and gothic style so i went for more the darker outfits with bright wigs to add colour. some of the face ups were more heavy make up for me at that stage too.

i went on a break from collecting before i did i parted with some of my collection and only kept a few i couldnt bear to see go. now im slowing returning i found that im loving the more girly looks, the natural face ups, layered dress styles like that of val zeitler. pretty prints and outfits that have more than one look with them so i have more flexibility. my dolls that i kept from the starting years have been having make overs to their looks, new face ups and new outfits to reflect my new tastes and it got me thinking have any of you had big changes in style / tastes since you started collecting and how have you changed?
      so really im asking -

what taste / styles did you start with when you entered the hobby?

      how has that changed?

what styles taste currently appeals to you now?

    2. So far in my years in the hobby my tastes have changed many times. Initially in 2008 I started with a really fantasy based collection of soom dolls, then I transitioned to anthros, then Fairyland dolls (everything mnf and under) and now Im more into doll chateau. I guess my taste change is best summarized by the company since they all have different looks. Most of the dolls from my earlier tastes are still around though, I mostly only rehome the ones I cant bond with and who dont fit in with the larger group. Otherwise, everyone gets updated and refreshed when I feel the need. Im also happier with my collection this way, its got a lot of diversity and for the first time my wish list is actually shorter than the list of dolls I already own XD

    3. Yes... my taste has gotten more expensive -.-' going from $200-$300 dolls to $500-$1000 dollar dolls ><' haha!!

    4. Definitely. I wanted jrockers and historical chinese figures. Now I want chic ralph-lauren-esque university businessmen, sky pirates, and fantasy children.

    5. I wouldn't say mine has changed, really... I still prefer 1/3-scale dolls with more stylized features, more natural face-ups and wigs in "naturally occurring" colors, just like I always have... But they do seem to have broadened a little as the years have gone by, and I've added dolls to the collection that I might not have in earlier days.

In the beginning, I wouldn't have considered owning a micro-scale (1/12) Tiny... Like my Banji.
Or tall, massive and more "realistic"-looking sculpts... Like the Akando who's already here, and the two other EIDs I'm planning this summer.
Or dolls with fantasy parts more extensive than simple elf ears... Like my hooved Heliot or Euclase/Chalco and Onyx/Beryl hybrids.

Outfit-wise, in spite of having a number of dolls who do spend most of their time in traditional Asian outfits, it's always been pretty varied over here. Even my first pair (Harumatsu and Tien Jen, who are among the most strongly Asian-themed ones) have always had a good selection of other looks. I don't think my opinions on clothes for the crew are much different now than they ever have been.

    6. My first 7 dolls were SD boys. then, small (28-36cm) girls. And now I'm looking at dollfiedreams) But I like all of them, all the dolls I have.

    7. Nope- I thought they would. But when I started this hobby I was a fag hag and a queerio and all my dolls are girly men or androgynous. Or a woman. I got into this hobby because of the HZ uniforms. I still want them! So bad!

    8. My taste in dolls have remained the same, I'd say. The Soom fantasy dolls and mature, SD boys are what drew me into the hobby. My most recent purchase was a SD male with a fantasy theme and I absolutely adore him. Several other weaknesses I've had since joining this hobby include pointed ears and dark/fantasy make-up, especially on the boys <3 One thing that has changed is that I've taken a liking to fiber wigs.

    9. I'm the same way... most of my early dolls dress in a lot of "regular" clothes while I find out nowadays that I'm most drawn to more fantasy styles... I just find it a lot more interesting to customize such dolls, I think and if I could bear to part with some of my collection (and if they weren't characters from a story my best friend and I are writing) I'd switch some of them around in a heartbeat.

    10. I haven't really changed...*yet. I started with female, 'realistic', adult-looking dolls for modeling purposes and I still look for dolls in that style.

*Having said that I got my first Dollfie a few weeks ago. Of course, Dollfies have an anime look. I don't know why all of a sudden I started liking that style of doll, but I do now and might wind up buying more of them. But, Dollfies and their clothes are so expensive:...(

    11. I'm not sure if my tastes have changed, or if there are more dolls now that suit my tastes :) I really like arty dolls with weird proportions, like Lillycat or Doll Chateau, and there are way more of those than there were five years ago. So, I love Doll Chateau, but I think I would have loved them then, if they'd been around. I have noticed that I'm not as into showy fantasy parts as I used to be. I still like horns and hooves, but they're not as eye-catching for me when a new doll comes out.

    12. I've only been in this hobby for a year, so my tastes are the same. My dolls wear outfits from Regency London. (Except the one that has a mermaid fin!)

I'll report back in a year or so ;)

    13. Yes...I want more resin and have no plans to expand my OT vinyl side of the collection.

    14. I've been in the hobby since 2005 and mine has changed quite a bit..and even circling around again.... but I still have the first resin head I bought..even though I sold her once and had to buy her back..
at first I wanted all types all sizes but started with Luts CP, then fell in love with Dollshe, then Limwha..then the 16" fashiondoll types took hold, a few tinies but only two remain now...then realistic- IH, Dollstown..
and just last year it circled around, I bought two Luts CP heads..one is limited and hard to find but I had them once and now they are back..so it circled around.

    15. Hm, yes and no~

My first doll was a Puki, and while I still love her and her size, I feel like I'm done with the 'teenie tiny' dolls. My favourite size is still yosd, but I have been slowly gravitating towards larger dolls. I still like stylised dolls with an element of 'fantasy' over super-realistic features; but what I think has changed over the years is my attitude towards fantasy parts. When I was new, I thought they were the coolest things ever and wanted all my dolls with wings and hooves and horns and ears, odd shaped bodies and in crazy colours. I realise now that odd-shaped dolls can be frustrating to clothe, dolls with hooves can be darn temperamental to pose, and dolls in funky colours can be challenging to faceup. More and more I'm seeing appeal in normal human dolls with pretty faceups as nice clothes. ^^; I've also (rather recently) revamped one of my "warrior" dolls to be all pink, lacy, girly and cute, mostly because I was just getting bored of the idea (and tired to looking at a half-finished project) :sweat She's probably the most drastic change within my doll collection due to changing tastes.
You can also count me in with the crowd who are just getting into the super-stylised dolls like Dollfie Dreams and SQLabs ;)

    16. My tastes have changed a few times over the 6 years I've been in the hobby. Like OP, I took a break from dolls for a few years. When I first entered the hobby, I adored anime-style BJDs like Dream of Doll, CP and standard Volks. After two years, I started liking sculpts that looked less like that. Now I appreciate a wider range of styles, but the purely anime esthetic doesn't have the same appeal anymore. The dolls that really capture my attention now are stylised but more like they've stepped out of a painting rather than off the page of a manga.

    17. Nope. I came into the hobby liking girly men and I still like girly men.;)
I mean I like guys that, you know, /look/ like guys too, and wouldn't mind having a doll that reflects that, but I still love having a doll that I can dress both ways and it looks equally as cute so I'm happy I got what I did when I started out. ^^ I also liked DDs to begin with, and originally wanted one, and I still like them so....tastes are exactly the same as when I started out.:sweat

    18. My tastes did not change but the scope expanded both in sizes and in sculpts.

    19. I don't know if my tastes have changed so much as they are expanding. The same style of dolls still appeal to me (sorta stylised, less realistic cute female dolls) but I'm getting into larger sizes and different companies, but with a similar style to what originally appealed to me.
That said, I have an urge to make my latest (SD) some of the most stereo typical, non-casual outfits I can. My original crew all dressed pretty "normal" (easiest thing to sew for MSDs I guess!) But suddenly I want to make a little red riding hood outfit, an Alice-inspired dress, a school girl uniform, something lolita-esque, maybe something with a Victorian spin... I'm excited by the detail the larger size will let me (hopefully) get :D
So I guess a little change, but nothing drastic

    20. Kind of. When I first got into the hobby six years ago my tastes leaned toward the very stylized; I owned a DoC and the first large dolls I went for were Delfs. I still love my Delfs, don't get me wrong, but as time passed I went to a slightly more realistic style with my Elfdoll boys. It's a minor shift though, comparatively. The hyper-realistic dolls do nothing for me; nor do the fantasy ones, for the most part. So I guess in a way it's stayed relatively consistent despite the length of time I've been doing this.
