Have anyone ever purchased multiple dolls just to find the perfect doll?

Nov 28, 2011

    1. Hi everyone! :)

I would like to hear peoples input on this subject, I'm having a bit of an issue with it. :P Ever since I bought my first doll, I have been searching for my perfect doll. You would think that my first doll would be perfect, and that would be why I bought it. But it was not. I have been trying so hard to find the "one" doll that I feel I will really love. The one with the perfect face and body sculpt with great poseability and just works with my personality. I really like dolls with exaggerated face sculpts and body proportions, but I also love for them to be accurate looking and great at posing. So far, I have not found that kind of doll yet.
I have been purchasing multiple dolls and trying them out to see if I form any kind of real attachment to them. I currently have four dolls at home, an Obitsu, a Felix Brownie, a Pukifee Ante and a Leekeworld Mikhaila. I also have a doll on the way, a Doll Chateau Bella. When I first purchased my dolls, I thought I would really love all of them. But when they arrived home, I did not like them as much as I thought I would. My only doll that I really like right now is my Pukifee Ante. I am considering putting my other dolls up for adoption, just because I don't feel like I have any kind of attachment to them. There are multiple reasons for this as well. Maybe they don't pose as well as I hoped, maybe I don't like their face sculpt of body sculpt as much as I thought I would. (It is becoming kind of frustrating actually.) I don't mean to just throw my money or my dolls around, I would just really like to find a doll that I will really love and take care of.

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever done this or is doing this, just so you could find your perfect doll. I would like to hear peoples stories of their search and struggle to find their dolls. Was your perfect doll your first doll? Or maybe a hybrid doll? :)

Thanks, I can't wait to see everyone's feedback! :):aheartbea

    2. Haha, I know how you feel! I've bought dolls thinking I would love them only to find they're "not for me". I went through different sizes, sculpts, and companies to find what was "right" for me.

I'm also possibly going to go on this journey again as I plan on buying some PukiPukis. I don't know if I'll love them as much as I think I will but I guess there's only a few ways to find out...

    3. Did you ever find the doll that was right for you? :o I am currently investigating getting the human bodies of the Dollzone Anson and Moment, they look AMAZING. Physically, they look exactly how I want them too. Let's hope they pose well, haha~

And that is awesome! :D I had a Pukipuki once, they are adorable! I hope it works out for you! :)

    4. i think it can be a matter of working out exactly which aspects of a doll are important to you, and which ones are deal breakers. sometimes it's easy to be distracted by one part, only to find that another really bothers you, for instance a lovely faceup grabs you but when you get the doll she has weird knees or ugly hands. I have an obitsu that i really like except for her feet. i find them really ungainly with chunky ankles, sure she stands like a rock due to the magnets, but i don't like making her shoes.

    5. I'm not exactly doing that - I've got a list of dolls I need for certain characters - but I'm having trouble w/this one character & keep looking, looking, looking ~sigh~ I was SO sure I had it all planned out but nooooo

    6. I did! The 2 dolls in my signature wound up to be the perfect size, meet my aesthetics, and even have great posing! (If you exclude the fact they can't touch their faces... <_<)

      I :aheartbea YoSD. Hehe.

Yeah, I'm hoping to see my friend's PukiPuki(s) [I don't know how many she has] before I decide to buy them.

    7. None of my dolls is really perfect when it comes to posability&sculpt. But what one doll lacks for example in posability it makes up in sculpt and that's how I play with different dolls when I want the one or the other. ^^

    8. Kind of?

My dolls are supposed to be certain characters, but there are times a doll comes home and I realize it's all wrong for the character I had in mind. Other times, I simply find a sculpt that fits better. So, I have bought dolls that aren't perfect so to speak, and I've had to sell them.

    9. I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect doll, although the good part of resin dolls is that you can customize them if there is something that bugs you. For example, if you don't like how they pose you can try sueding or hot-gluing the joints, or you can try modding features that you don't like.

Then again, maybe you had some unrealistically high expectations about this hobby. They're toys, not guaranteed endorphine/ oxytocin highs. And in my opinion, these "bonding" and "attachment" memes that are floating around in the fandom can lead to a lot of disappointment for people who don't feel the ~magic~.

    10. I don't search for the perfect doll. I look for dolls that suit original characters I want to shell. And even then, they don't have to look exactly like that character -- there has to be an atmosphere about them that fits. While I have gotten rid of dolls whose quirks just didn't work for me, in other cases I'm more than happy to play with hot glue and restringing and new faceups and new eyes and wigs -- the process is part of the fun for me. If a doll came out of the box exactly like one of my characters I would be weirded out . . .
But I have switched characters, re-shelled, all that kind of thing to get the results I want. It's not unusual to buy more than one doll to get one result, IMO.

    11. I buy all sorts of dolls and have bought at least 5 times as many as I have kept!
The good news about this hobby is that the resale is normally pretty good, so you can take a good look at a doll and send it along to someone else if it's not for you. I keep a relatively small collection, but every single one of my dolls is perfect! For me.
My mom and I joke about which of us has the most beautiful and perfect dolls (it's me, but she thinks it's her). What's perfect to me, may not be perfect to you and vice versa.
I would rather send a doll along to someone who might adore it, than to keep it sitting on a shelf in my house, so I say, adopt them out if they are not perfect to you!
I have a dozen dolls (my personal limit), and they are all "perfect". But I have gone through so many more, I have lost count.
Keep in mind, you cannot go to your local bjd store to see them in person, so you either have to buy them or see them at a local meetup to know what they truly look like, and pose like, in person.
I had a CD Bella for a short time, and I think you might just fall in love with that girl! She has an exaggerated face sculpt and body proportions, she's a decent poser, and her resin is lovely.
I had a wonderful time with my Bella, but sent her along to someone else, because although she was awesome, she was not perfect for me (and I already had a dozen perfect dolls...).

By the way, the first doll I bought, I paid an absolute fortune for, and she was not at all perfect for me. She was completely perfect for the person I sold her to though!

You'll do fine, just keep looking until the perfect doll arrives, sell the ones that aren't for you, and before you know it, you'll be telling my mom and me that YOU have the most perfect and beautiful dolls (and you will...for you!)!

    12. There's no "one doll" for me, because I like so many things, it would be impossible to put all of that in one doll. I like big, doll-like bobble heads and realistic faces, chubby child like girl dolls and mature woman dolls, nice looking single joints, super posable bodies, lightly muscular men dolls, tall boy dolls, short teen boy dolls, white, normal and tan resin, dreaming eyes, open eyes, smiling faces, open mouths with teeth showing, French and urethane resin, and a lot more.
I love my dolls for different reasons and sometimes I make hybrids so my dolls become more to my liking when either the head or body has something I don't like. There will always be limitations with each doll, but as long as there's enough that I do like, I'll keep them.

    13. I have gone through purchasing several dolls to find the shell that would fit one of my characters. He still refuses to shell in anything I threw at him so far. Any other character had settled down in a mold I have gotten for them. Sometimes it needed more work on a doll, like more than 3 trys to get the face-up right or wipe a company face-up that was pretty but didn't work.
Despite having bought 2 molds that didn't work for the character I kept them :3 They just became somebody else. I have not sold any of my dolls so far... maybe I will though in the futur. I have bought more dolls than I first wanted but I think any of those I have now, has a right to be there and has it's unique story.
So I will keep trying for my elusive character and I think I definitely found him now ^^.. but who knows?

    14. I also don't have a 'perfect' doll because so far I have found multiple I absolutely love to death.
But yeah, I have been doing it ever since I got into this hobby, pretty much three years ago. I have bought and sold over 30 dolls/heads/bodies etc but somehow never had more than 8 at the same time.
for me this hobby is about trial and error. I can absolutely love a doll on the website and in photo's, but somehow they usually end up not being to my liking when I can actually hold them.
So I have fallen in love many times, but a lot of the times I found I didn't pay that much attention to a certain doll anymore and then I decide to sell it to get a doll I love more.
At the moment I have 6 dolls (with 2 incoming) of which 5 are perfect to me. So yeah, I have been searching for the perfect dolls for me, which is the way I enjoy this hobby.

    15. Wow, this is some awesome input. :D Thanks so much everyone! I'm honestly not much of a character person- I wish I was though. Usually when a doll comes home, the character for it just starts to form in my mind over time, just from the characteristics of the doll. I usually don't have a name or any idea how I want them to look until I spend some time with the doll, haha~ I don't really feel like I am expecting to much out of the hobby, I know they are dolls. But I have toys and other things from when I was young that I still have such an attachment to, and I would like to find that in a doll. Maybe it wont be "perfect", but it will be good enough for me. I suppose I will continue to use the trial-and-error method until I can find the best doll for me. :)

    16. That's a good idea. :3 I was considering doing that on one of my dolls, but I was really nervous about damaging the doll some how so I just never tried to do it. I have done some modding on my Pukifee Ante, just because I know I want to keep her. But because I am so unsure about my other dolls, I don't want to take the risk in case I want to sell them.

I don't feel like I have unrealistic expectations of this hobby. I realize that they are dolls, and that they wont give me a "high" every time I play with them. But I think that if I can still have a strong attachment to toys that I played with when I was younger, I should be able to have a strong attachment with a doll that I can mold to be perfect to me. It's not disappointing for me, it's just a frustrating little journey I have been going on, haha~ I'm sure though that I can find a doll who makes me feel the "magic".

    17. My first two dolls, Amir (AoD Chen) and Loki (DZ Mo-2) were absolutely perfect for me, but over the past year, I decided to upgrade both to SD (AoD Gu and DZ Mo-B) and they are still perfect, even better, actually! :D

The others....I had to really search for. Almost all of my dolls are on their second or even third shell, just trying to find the perfect one. I've been through a really long string of dolls and had a lot of disappointments.

But like Nightweaver says, it's not about a "perfect" or "flawless" doll to me, it's about one that fits a character. For example, I don't think my RS Lu is drop dead gorgeous by any means. She has a big, somewhat masculine nose, small eyes and her face is not symmetrical. But she's perfect for Maddy, b/c Maddy isn't supposed to look like a super model or be "perfect". Because she ISN'T "perfect" but fits my character so well,I absolutely love her!

    18. I don't believe there is any doll out there that would be my "perfect" doll. i happen to really enjoy a wide variety of dolls/companies/sculpts.
Like others that have already posted it all just depends on whether or not the doll fits the character~

    19. I don't strive for perfection in my dolls, even MY standard of perfection (which people would probably think is way less than actual perfection). When it comes to my dolls, even I sometimes wonder if sculpt-wise they actually fit the character I bought them to shell. But then I realize that, for me, it all comes down to how I feel when I look at them. When I bought them, all of them, it was because they FELT like one of my pre-existing characters or they felt like a doll I wanted to create a character for. This has, so far, kept me from rotating through dolls. I'm not saying it will never happen but following my gut on dolls has worked so far and I hope it continues to work.

If creating characters for dolls is not your thing, maybe hybridizing a doll might work. Maybe this face or body doesn't work but, if you put them together, you'll find what you're envisioning. Also, modding might help. I've read some great threads of people modding a doll to their specifications. That might be for you and maybe you'll find your perfect doll. :D

    20. I thought that's how the hobby works! ;)

Yep, have gone through multiple dolls and loved each of them for various reasons but always come back to the Dollshe Saint. <----perfect
