Have you ever gotten sick from being close to a doll?

Jan 16, 2010

    1. This week, Tuesday night to be specific, I was very tired and decided to lay down with my brand-new Cecilia after a photoshoot and watch some TV.

I slept like a baby with Cecilia at my side, my arm gently curled around her.

I was woken up to someone ringing the doorbell, after I answered and they left, I noticed I felt terribly nauseous...a few moments later, I was bent over the toiled throwing up what little was in my stomach.

Symptoms of the stomach flu persisted up until today, when they've finally been weaning off.

Until my order of clothes for my doll arrived.

I of course, immediately took her out and put her clothes on! But within moments, my nausea returned.

Has anyone seen or had this happen? Am I imagining it? I've heard resin is toxic, but it isn't like I've been chewing on her! Could I be allergic to resin?

Have y'all had this happen before? Or am I crazy?

    2. It sounds like it's more likely that you're just sick right now. :sweat I've got the flu right now, as does over 7 of my friends, so I know it's going around again right now. I don't think being around the doll has anything to do with it, it's more likely the laying down then waking up caused the acids in your stomach to reject the food in your stomach, which happens to me everytime I lay down while sick.

My dolls are kept away in their boxes when not being played with, plus I wash my hands before and after playing with them. I know they're not what got me sick, my friends did rofl. Plus I've had them for months before I ever started getting sick and only play with them for about 30 minutes a day as of this month.

    3. would it be just a coincident? I have never heard that before. Why don't you put your girl away for few days and come back to see if you're still feeling sick around her.

    4. If your doll is new, there may be some gassing off of the resin going on (That's what causes that "new doll" smell so many of us love. XD), and it's possible you could be reacting to that... or you could have a sensitivity to the mold release agent if there's any left on her. Time will eventually take care of the first, and a good cleaning should handle the second.

It's also possible, as was mentioned above, that you've just been jumped by some virus with bad timing... I had that happen with my LittleFee Shiwoo last year. The day the postman brought Ishi I was so flu-addled I could hardly dress the poor little guy. NOT fun. But it did eventually get better. ^_^

    5. there is a thread here that i cant remember the name of. its asking if people put their dolls away when they are sick or not. at the time when i read the thread it seemed like most people actually used the doll to comfort them while they are sick and cant go out with friends. i don't think Ive heard of anyone getting sick from the dolls.

    6. I made my doll sick once. Gave her a cold. Fact.

I can imagine someone could suffer an allergic reaction or something to one of the materials found in the doll or its clothing/hair/whatever but a stomach bug seems unlikely. Probably just chance.
Also, you fell asleep with your doll? I'd be way to scared of dropping or damaging mine in my sleep!

    7. No, but my wallet has felt great pain...

Seriously, just give her a few days to air out, don't put her back in the box as that will only let the chemicals sit, then undress and give her a quick and careful rinse.

    8. If in doubt, clean the doll. Keep away from her for a while, and if you're still sick without her influence, that's that. More likely, you got sick because it's January, like I did three days ago. Sob. ;_;

    9. I remember one case, many years ago, where a woman had to sell her doll due to a reaction to resin out-gassing. Her symptoms were respiratory distress and hives, though, not nausea. The doll was confirmed to be the culprit by her physician before she was willing to let him go.
All in all, it's very, -very- unlikely, though not completely impossible.

    10. I hope not! Hopefully it's just the flu and you will be feeling better soon.
      Get some rest, : )

    11. I've gotten eye infections from sanding especially Soom dolls,..most others don't affect me as bad.

    12. What? LOL

Anyhow, I think you just have the Flu. It is going around. My neighbors have been sick since before Xmas and now they all have pneumonia and are house bound. Take care of yourself. Put your doll somewhere out of the way to detox and hit the bed. Get some rest.

I wanted to also address what catdancer said I opened a head cap of a DIM MNM head and it had some loose resin scraps so I blew it out but a bit got into my eye and my eye was messed up for a full week. Resin dust and eyes not a good mix and I sucked in a bit of MSC not good either. I figured I was outside how much could I breathe in anyhow note enough to make me sick:P

    13. Oh, to RaineFournier, I really sorry that you felt so sick :(

My doll is still fairly new and has that resin-gas smell about her. Until reading this thread, I didn't know what this smell was, but I assumed it had to do with the resin (the smell seemed rather toxic to me... I'm somewhat surprised that people like it. In my case, I imagine that if the resin smell was stronger and I had to inhale it for a long time, I could wind up feeling ill)--but hopefully this hasn't actually happened to anyone.

    14. Reply from an Immunologist.
'It is highly unlikely to develop an allergy to a synthetic solid resin, for any substance to cause an allergy, it has to be exposed to the immune system in this context this would involve either breathing in or ingestion either directly or indirectly from handling the doll. In terms of inhalation the process of sanding, in sensitised individuals breathing in this dust may cause irritation.
However if handling the doll and then ingesting any residue including any sealant via the hands may cause an allergic or toxic reaction. This is highly a unlikely outcome fortunately.'

    15. It may have just been coincidence that you got sick the same day you got your doll. I know I was slightly ill the day my second doll arrived, and I got worse that night, so I never really got a chance to bond with that doll and she is long gone now. It could be that your nausea returned when you handled her again as you were associating her with you being ill.

    16. I don't have a resin doll, so don't take my word on this as truth but, I think that if your sickness really was related to your doll, then I imagine something like red arms (for being in contact with the doll) or any similar reactions.
For something related with your stomach, I think like others mentioned, that you would have to ingest resin or something, by sleeping with the doll I see that as likely to happen as just while handling her.

    17. I'd have to say, based on symptoms, you're probably just suffering an ill-timed flu. Most problems I've heard with resin and resin fumes involve the respiratory system. So unless you've been licking your girl, I think you're good. :p
