1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Have you ever kept the Sculpt Name as your Doll's Name?

Oct 28, 2009

    1. How common is it for BJD owners to name their dolls after the sculpt? (Note: I'm not asking "should it be ok to do this," I'm asking whether other people do this, so don't feel the need to reply with "It's your doll, do what you like." :sweat) It doesn't seem to be a very common practice in this hobby. It seems to me that keeping the sculpt name is interpreted as being less original, or making the doll less of one's own possession, and more like a mass-produced item.

I have a B&G Freya and the name Freya has just stuck. I can't think of anything else to name her. I have trouble naming my dolls, and since my Freya's not based on a character, keeping the sculpt name makes more sense to me. Do any of you have dolls like this- the sculpt name just "fits"? Or do any of you do this with most or all of your dolls, not just one or two special cases? (unless it's something not name-like at all, like Volks numbered sculpts lol!)

    2. I've really heavily considered keeping my Volks MSD Toppi's name as Toppi, but have thought about maybe naming her Tessa in referance to her sculpt name. Since I've introduced my family to her as "My Toppi", it kind of seems like it might stick as that. :sweat My F-18 I had an easy solution to which was inspired by my Toppi, take the first letter and add onto it as a name. F-18 = Fiona, Toppi = Tessa (Maybe, might actually stay as Toppi).

The Volks SD Kun I have planned on the other hand is a different matter. *_* I look at her and think "the Kun mold" and therefore always call it/them a Kun, but I really hate how the name sounds when I say it. :doh

I like how easy it is to refer to dolls when named after their sculpts though and often refer to people's dolls as "Your Liz" or "Your Mark" even if they're already named something else.

    3. I don't mind the name Anais, for example, but I like renaming all the dolls I've ever gotten, so she would never keep that name.

A lot of other people name dolls, and fashion them, after characters too, so naturally the doll would take the identity of their character.

Amusingly, I've named my dolls after other things, so they're not unique.

For example, U-da mold is named Serenity after the show Firefly. Anais mold will probably be named Bumblebee, from (lol) Transformers.

I don't know. A lot of it is just the habit of the hobby too. That's all you ever see, so I don't think it really occurs to you to keep the mold name and do it differently than everyone else in that way.

    4. i tend to like the mould names so i sometimes use them, but unless its a character to be based on then maybe i'll change i guess? XD

    5. Well, one of the reasons i got my doll was to name her...So i never did use the companies name. Also because i'm sure many people keep the name from the companies so i just wanted my doll to be one of a kind:)

    6. I like to think of names to suit my doll's character whether the character is prexisting and floating around in my head before I actually get the doll or not. I don't think I'd ever keep the mold name unless it was absolutely perfect. I do refer to my doll's by their mold sometimes though. [ie - I'll say "my shushu" or "my miyu"] Mostly only when talking to other "doll people"

    7. When I first started collecting I just kept the company name. But there was one name in particular, Dollmore's "Vora", that I didn't care for, so I ended up renaming all my dolls. Although I still call my first Elfdoll Catsy, Catsy--for now anyway.:kitty2

    8. plenty of people keep their dolls mold names as their "real" names. i have friends who do it....
i personally dont, but its mostly because mine were characters first, dolls second. some of mine are to the point where most people (irl people) dont even know what molds i have :| When i talk about them i have to say "y'know, the Ryu. ...David." and if asked about my dolls they say "its Alex" or "its a Wyn!" ...(actually had that happen recently)...and a lot of us just refer to Kamau as Thomas now. because uh....thomas is easier to pronounce. XD *is lame*

    9. I wouldn't ever keep a mold name unless it was absolutely perfect, and/or was the name I already had for the character, and even then I'd honestly feel really strange about it. To me it would seem like naming a dog or cat it's breed name rather than giving it an individual name. It doesn't bother me at all for other people to do that, I know lots of people do, but for my dolls personally I don't think it would work for me.

    10. Part of the fun is coming up with creative names for my dolls. So I never use their sculpt names.

    11. I've ordered an Espree. I think that's a neat name, but it doesn't fit the persona I have in mind for her. I do think Espree would be a cool name for a fairy doll, though.

    12. I've kept the default names for my Dollfie Dreams already based on existing characters. It would seem kind of weird to me to change Kanu's or Saber's names to something else, but I've picked names for all my other dolls.

    13. I tried to find other name for my AR Diana, but the name Diana felt better than any of the names I thought, plus I found the name pretty. Many dolls have beautiful sculpt names and I wouldn't find it odd if people wanted to keep them. I think it's perfectly fine if the owner thinks it fits the doll or the character.

I know one BJD owner who doesn't name her dolls, only calls them by their sculpt names. To her these dolls are something to collect, she isn't interested in the character creating aspect. This doesn't make her dolls any less unique in my eyes, she has some of my favorite dolls in our Finnish forum, full of personality and style.

    14. I have one doll that kept her original name. I quite like it and never thought of her as having any other name because it suits her so well. I have several friends who never seem to name their dolls at all; they just collect them and stand them on a shelf.

    15. oh yes!^^
My DOD Homme Ivan kept the name Ivan^^
Because it's suits so perfectly to him and I very like this name.
It's often that I like the mod name^^
      (Ducan, Camine, Topaz, Heliot, Amber...etc)
      And I think it's okay^^

    16. I don't mind people doing it but chances are I wouldn't keep the sculpt name. If it suited the doll/character maybe but I like finding my own names. Makes them feel more special to me. Much like my cat being Alexander and not 'Cat' Or 'Fluffy Cat'. Yes I know people who name their cats like that. :)

    17. well I rename most of mine, but I have a few who are being reluctant about names. My Lee Jun Ki is answering to Lee since he refuses to tell me his name, and my dragons keep changing their names. I think they think it is fun to mock me. All the others have names based off their characters.

    18. *Has a dog named 'Pup'* :sweat That's probably part of where my lack of creative naming ideas comes from and why I don't mind keeping company sculpt names most of the time. The same can be said about my other dog who was already named Trixie when we adopted her, dolls seem to be very much the same with me for some reason. :?

    19. For the most part, I enjoy coming up with the name that just clicks with the doll in question. It's just such a satisfying feeling to look at the doll, think of the name or say it out loud, and suddenly have that perfect "Aha!" moment. Of course, sometimes the name sticks a little TOO well; for example, I sometimes slip up and call other tan DZ Yuus "Vyvyan" as well, e.g., "Oh hey, her Vyvyan has a tattoo on his left hand, that's pretty neat!" *facepalm* However, I've never mentally associated the name Allysdeir with any other DZ Wings I've seen.

On the other hand, the Floy that my sister and I are waiting on already seems to have seized onto his company sculpt name with a deathgrip. It's such a cute and simple little name, so heck, why not? At this point, I doubt we could rechristen him even if we wanted to; the new name would probably just slide right off him.

    20. When I get my doll (Hes a Ys type B) I have no idea what to name him. I have lots of character names, but they dont really go well for him. When ever I say Ys, I have no clue how its really pronounced, I just love it! So unless I decide on something else thats better I'll go with calling him Ys!
