Heat and color change?

Jan 21, 2024

    1. Hi folks,

I’ve had a lavender skinned Luts doll sitting in my office for five months, about 5 feet diagonally from a window. The room is bright but she was not in direct sun. With that in mind, I was shocked to undress her today and discover significant color change. The resin that was covered by clothes/wig looks normal, but what’s been exposed is very cool toned and light. This seems far too fast and extreme to be from ambient light. That said, a couple months ago a space heater went haywire and made the room VERY hot overnight. That is the only thing I can think of that could explain it, but am I correct in thinking that if heat were to blame, the color change would not have occurred only on exposed parts? *_*

    2. Correct. If it were just heat, it's likely that there would have been more significant color change on the unexposed areas.

So, yes, while the light may not have hit her directly, it did change her color. You said the room is bright. I assume with sunlight? UV rays don't care if they shine directly on your doll, they'll bleach and yellow resin as long as they're in the room.

And fantasy colors are not necessarily as stable as standard pale flesh tone. And red tones get zapped first.

    3. I bought a lavender skinned Luts Wolfy doll second hand and the entire doll looked significantly different in color than the Wolfy doll in the original sales photos for the doll. Mine just looks gray! At least its a uniform color change on my doll! I keep ALL of my dolls in a dark cabinet in a dark room. I handle and photograph them often so it doesn't bother me that I keep them hidden away for the most part. The sad reality is that the resin in these dolls can"t handle much light. They do have UV rays protective sprays I believe, but I hate coating my dolls with anything, because eventually those coatings get old and break down themselves and look ugly! I like to keep my dolls pristine. Some people even go so far as to keep their dolls in their original boxes all of the time. I dont do that, but they all go back into the dark cabinet I'm when done photographing them.

    4. To say I’m shocked is an understatement…I am not new to dolls but rooms where I kept them in previous houses must have been just a tiny bit darker. I’m especially upset as I’m no longer active in the hobby and was trying to sell this already hard to sell doll. Thanks for your input.

    5. Certain colors and pigments are unfortunately not very stable, and general constant sunlight (even if not directly blasting the surface) is enough to let them break down.
The red basically vanished from the mixture, which is why the doll looks lighter and more cool.

    6. Heat can speed up oxidization, but that typically happens all over the surface, fairly evenly. Clothes are not going to make a huge difference on the over all temperature of the doll.

Fading, on the other hand often happens exactly like you descibe. In my experience it can happen quite fast and of course will be faster on exposed surfaces. Clothes will shade the surface from some of the light and so protect parts of the doll. The good news is that a lot of the time, the rest of the doll tend to "catch up" with the faded parts over time making it more even. Selective blushing can help making things more uniform short term. Faded pigments can be replaced trough dying for a more permanent solution.
So even if I understand your dissapointment, the doll is by no means ruined.
