How do we 'play' with our dolls?

Mar 20, 2013

    1. People ask me what I do with my dolls all the time. Most of the time I just look at them. Somtimes I change their clothes, snap a few photos, then just enjoy looking at them some more. I like to pose my dolls with animals, and other toys and take photos.
Some people make photostories. I've always loved reading those. I loved reading the correspondence photostories but those have trickled out of popularity. I've roleplayed with my dolls online, using photos and text.
Others use their dolls to make clothes. And some act out scenes with their dolls.

What do you do? How do you play with your dolls? :aheartbea

    2. I like sewing for them and in the old days when I had more time, I used to take more photos. (Hoping to take more photos of them now that I've moved though and am restarting my collection)

    3. I enjoy posing our two boys together and taking some photos of them.
I also love to give my boy new styles, like making a new wig, clothes, etc.. And then taking photos again, haha.
I also have a facebook account for him like many do nowadays and kinda roleplay with him, it's really fun I think.

    4. Up until recently I played with my dolls by posing them, dressing them up, having them sit with me whilst I do things, taking photographs. Now my third doll is coming and the flood gates have opened - I'm going to sand him, paint him, change his hands, body blush him, re-string him, hot glue suede him, wire him and make clothes for him. I really, really want to learn how to make good clothes for them. I think the most enjoyable part so far has been styling and posing them though, especially together.

    5. I role play my characters almost every night. As far as the actual dolls, I dress them, sew for them, pose them, take pix, write stories, take them on outing for photoshoots, or just have them hang around while I do stuff.

    6. I usually have Avalon with me on my bed or on my desk when I'm on the computer and take pictures of him, pose him, sew for him and I'll hold him when surfing the net. He's just..Cuddly.

    7. I play with my dolls by painting them myself, modding some of them, sewing for them, photographing them, and sometimes taking them out places with me. I also like to keep them around me sometimes, sitting on a table or desk next to me. I also play 'with' them by having them sit close at hand while I write about them, or RP them.

    8. This. ^^ Two of my little RS guys, Tyler and Dylan, are cuddly and I've discovered that Beau, my new Limhwa guy, is cuddly too. It might be weird for some people to consider hard resin as "cuddly" but some of them are just...huggable like that. I will often surf the net with one of them on my lap or sitting next to me on the bed. I've been known to carry Tyler around the house, so people never know where they might see him when they come to visit. :)

The big thing I like to do with my dolls is pose them and take photos of them. They are all based on original characters, so I create stories and photo stories for them too. I like taking them to interesting places for photo shoots. I sew and make jewelry and props for them. I just like having them around. :)

    9. So true about some of them being just huggable. I don't think I can ever go a day without giving Avalon a hug. XD;; I actually once dozed off holding him when I was watching a movie.

I also love finding props for my boy me and my mom made him an Easter basket yesterday. XD

    10. Mine get posed, and sewn for, cuddled and carried... often they will sit and watch tv with me, or motivate me to sew. :) I am working on my first photostory too!

    11. I "play" with my dolls but doing face-ups, styling wigs, dressing them, and photographing them. I enjoy watching my granddaughters play with them. I enjoy looking at them posed on their shelves when I'm not actively playing with them. And I do find it comforting the hold one of the tinies and pay with their hair when I'm not feeling well. :)

    12. When I started getting my BJDs back in 2011 I purchased them with the primary focus on taking photos of them.

So, I started wondering what the consensus is, whether you have your dolls...

      -For display only
-For play (stories, 'relationships' between dolls, etc.)
      -For photographing
      -All the above
      -Or another reason

Even though I did initially buy them for photographic purposes, I now enjoy them as much as when they are on display (I used to box them away after a shoot). I haven't done any stories between any of the my ladies, but in a sense I kind of see certain dolls being more relationship-oriented.

For instance: I have (2) Soom Gena's which I see as cousins, not sisters. Why cousins and not sisters? I don't know, I just do  Maybe it's because they have different skin tones and body materials.

    13. I keep my dolls for all those reasons. I'm a collector at heart, so I keep them on display and update my collection. But I also love to play with my boys and keep them near me. Dolls have always been a source of comfort and company for me, ever since I was born, really. lol. And I love photography, it runs in my family....so naturally I love to shoot pictures of my boys. >< I'm too chicken to post them here, though. lol

    14. Hmm, I'd definitely say my hobby with BJDs definitely grew into all of those!
I initially got into BJDs because I'm a digital artist, and have made a couple OCs that I cherish to the bottom of my heart, and all I wanted was to be able to interact with them. I found the perfect sculpts to represent my characters, and for that, I feel complete with my hobby at that. Being able to touch them and look at them makes me truly the happiest person I can be.
Now I am expanding my creative interest and learning and creating faceups, which I adore. It's so rewarding to work on dollies, and to pretend as if I am making them up for some sort of event. I just love it so much. ^ ^

BJDs definitely make me feel at peace and complete as a person.

    15. You should post some on here, I like to see how other people photograph their dolls and it can spark ideas for everyone.

    16. I have wanted try face-ups a few months after I started collecting my dolls. But I was/am afraid I'll ruin the resin of a face/body too much.

    17. If you have the correct tools and sealant, there's nothing to worry about! ^ u ^ You should try if you are interested!

    18. Well, i mainly have them to make things for them. I am a very crafty person. Taking pictures is also nice...but I am not very good in this field. But collecting...no, not at all. I would be really overwhelmed by more than 3 dolls (mom, dad & child - pretty conventional).

    19. I'm an all of the above girl, I like my dolls to have a background story and to take pictures that go along with that story. Sometimes they jump out of character just to chill as normal house hold dolls that play cards, read books, have tea parties or just sit and look pretty. They each have their own personality and they show it to not just me, but to everyone around the house...it's amazing that a doll can give other people the same story with out me having to tell it for them. My dolls do have relationships among each other which just completely adds to how fun they are to own. ^-^

    20. Definitely all of the above! I love having them on display. I keep mine out all the time, just not in direct sunlight. I love photographing them and I love dressing them up. I also just like holding them and playing with their hair. I take them to meet ups which is good fun and I love seeing other peoples dolls too. Some of my dolls are OCs i've had in my head for ages and others I just fell in love with their sculpt.
