How do you feel about modifying your dolls?

Oct 8, 2013

    1. The title says it all—how do you feel about modifying your dolls?

Me personally, I'm somewhat scared of it. I've sanded my dolls and put in KIPS, but I am way too scared to take a Dremel to my doll. I'd like to modify their joints, but it's a bit scary!

    2. I've hacked noses off with x-acto knives! Hee hee! no scruples here!

    3. I am planning to sand down one of my girls noses a little and do some dremel work on another. I'm nervous and really excited. It should be interesting!

    4. Kips, eyelashes, stringing. That's it. I'm not brave enough to do anything more, yet T.T

    5. How do I feel about modifying?

Well, it is both terrifying and exciting, especially that first time you take the dremel out and work at the resin. The biggest mod I've accomplished was putting magnets into the back of my Yo. I had to drill two holes and be careful not to drill all the way through. It was scary but very exciting because if it turned out the way I'd planned, she would have her angel wings. Luckily, it worked!

    6. I kind of feel like if its a limited doll (like a really rare soom) or something like that it shouldn't be touched. I'm more inlined to hybrid mine as long as it doesn't involve moding of any kind. I think the only thing I'll ever be moding is a DZ april head to have dreaming eyes. I have the head already for my girl and Wanted a dreaming face for her.

    7. I love modding dolls - they were made to be customized, after all! The actual process is a bit exhausting what with the scary whirring dremel and the worry about respiratory protection and all the dust shooting all over the place, but the practice of modding itself doesn't faze me. I wish I had a proper workshop and proper gear to do it all in, to make sure everything is absolutely safe and easy. But I love knowing that I made the doll the way it is, and that it's unique. I also like having a skill I can work on and learn to improve.

    8. it would depend how valuable or rare the doll was, but with my impldoll harley I just got sick of the tree theme and put the human legs and arms on him (impldoll supplied them free) - got some pincers and nipped off his leafy elf ears, so he could wear a wig - yaaay! I probably should have sanded them smaller but didn't want to deal with dust. The fact that the wig covers his 'ears' gave me confidence - I wouldn't want to modify anything very visible.

    9. Well, I've never used a dremel before but I have taken an x-acto to my LE Migidoll's eyes. At first I was really hesitant about modding him because I'd never done it before and because it was a limited head. However, his squinty expression was really turning me off, so I bit the bullet and did it. Now, I am infinitely happier with the result, and look forward to modding again should the need arise.

I suppose patience is key. Have a clear goal for how much resin you're going to take off and go slow. Also having peaceful surroundings helps.

    10. I think it would depend on the doll
I originally planned on seam sanding and minor mod work on my Megu but after she arrived I didn't even want to change her eyes, just can't bring myself to do it, she's perfect the way she is
however I do have dolls that I'd like to someday own and there are a few that I'd like to mod things on

    11. I've sanded, opened eyes, smoothed out scratches, reshaped noses, modded hips to sit up better.....just the other day I took an exacto knife and sandpaper to Kier's stomach because FDoll doesn't have defined enough abs....though so far, I've only done subtractive mods, never additive. I'm not a pro by any means, I need a lot of work.

    12. I keep thinking about this lately. I've sanded a nose down a bit once, and have done non permanent mods with sculpty, but I think I'd have to have a doll I bought just to mod, to really mod! I was thinking about narrowing my shiwoo's eyes but everytime I get close I get too worried to do it!

    13. i pick one perfect to begin with, i'm not a fan of modifying them

    14. Even though my dollzone luna is limited, I still feel her ears should be modded (my BBB Lucky's too, but she's not rare). Faeries have pointed ears, not round ones.

    15. It will depend on the doll, probably. I'm really fascinated about customization possibilities, but I don't feel myself skilled enought to make importatnt modifications like changing eyes shape or carving muscles or similar...I own a rotary tool, but so far I've used it only two times, to carve a hole for tail magnets, and I was terribly scared (less after doing successfull the work, I have to admit). I'll probably use it again for some ears piercings, but nothing more complicate... not in the near future.

    16. I have done some serious moddings to all of my guys. I want them to be perfect for me. Mr. Stark received a waist joint, but I am still debating whether I want to take the final step and add the arc reactor to his chest. His girlfriend, however, is still exactly the way she arrived in my home. I only tried to touch up her beautiful face-up (was not really successfull, needs a completely new one). My little girl got only her string slots slightly elongated for improved posing. But maybe I will add some magnets in her shoulder blades for wings.

    17. I am very interested in modding. I want to give my cheshire at least three ear piercings and I have plans for a heavily modified white skin Lishe. I just don't have the proper tools to do it yet.

    18. Sure, I'd mod my dolls. I'm planning on doing some non-permanent work on my BBB Ariel and DZ Hid. My DZ Mo will get some heavy mods once he has a body. Magnets for wings, spikes on his back, etc. I also want to carve some muscle into my Ariel. Future dolls, like my RS Fei, will also get some mods. The Fei is going to have wires in her eyes so it looks like they were sewn shut. I'm not afraid to change my dolls to make them what I want.

    19. My doll that I'm saving for is going to need modding to make him in character and it terrifies me. I just got to take it a little at a time, and luckily, I'm buying spare parts to do the modding on, just in case I mess up.

    20. Auds, you'll be fine. When my first doll arrived, I was scared to even change her feet from flats to heels  Next thing I knew, I was happily modding my second ...

I've only done few mods, but I've only been in the hobby for a year. When my Elfdoll Yuan head didn't fit on the first body I wanted to put her on (Doll in Mind - she's now on a Mirodoll), I took a dremel to her neck hole. Next was a bit of hot-glue sueding. Last thing I tried was separating fingers on my Iple girls' hands, and some restorative work and additive mods on a Luts event head I got second-hand - I've wanted a Bajoran doll ever since I was fifteen. :) That's about as far as I've gone yet.
I'll try boiling and re-shaping resin next because the Mirodoll bodies, while great, have oval wrist joints and I want to hybrid some more elegant hands on the girl body at least. She'll also need more mobility in the wrists because the character plays the violin. And my boyfriend has been nagging me about a Klingon doll ... which may or may not happen, I'm not quite sure yet. :sweat

Anyway, since I'm the type who prefers being able to do everything myself (so I can fix it if I ever mess it up, y'know), I'm not scared of learning new skills, including modding.
