How do you store your dolls amonst other accessories?

Sep 17, 2013

    1. I saw a topic that was similar but not exact so I apologize if there is one already out there....

How do you store your dolls? I assume the ones you do not use daily are probably boxed up in their original boxes, but if you have a doll or two or three that you handle each and every day, where do you keep them when you aren't playing with them? Do you put them back in their boxes? Do you have a special tub that's easily accessible? My dolls will be arriving tomorrow and I fully intend to handle them often! But I am also VERY paranoid of yellowing so I am wondering how everyone stores their dolls. Any special tips/tricks please share!!! Also any tips/tricks regarding organization of all your items for your resin buddies! =) Thanks in advance!

    2. That is a really good question! I only have one 70cm doll at the moment, and he stays at my closet in his original box when he's not out and about. There's really not a lot of room left, so I have really no idea where I'm going to put my 58cm girl when she arrives! My closet's nice and dark (as is my room in general, explaining why the plant died) but I don't really like leaving Blair in there because he can't be seen. A strategy to keep from yellowing is having a doll fully clothed when taken out. I even gave mine a hat with brim to keep the sun off his face.

Also, boxes are a BJD collector's best friend when it comes to accessory storage. I have dollie food and weapons and hat and umbrellas which I store in accordance to which doll it "belongs" to. There's one photo album box used for shared items too!

Hope this helps some. I'm an extreme neophyte in this hobby, so I'd love to learn from both your and my own experiences.

    3. Actually, I don't have the room to keep mine in boxes. Instead, I've reserved a shelf for them in a dark part of the house (my hallway, no direct sunlight) and have them on display there.

On a sidenote: No matter what you do or where you store your doll, the resin will yellow a bit. It's a natural property of the material. But the word 'yellowing' is a bit misleading (I prefer to call it 'mellowing'). It's not like your doll will suddenly turn into a banana or something. I have a Volks SwD Lucas from 2003 and: yes, he's yellowed, but it is as if his resin has become a little more creamy. I prefer it to new Volks resin.

    4. Mine "live" on a two-storey corner shelf (Ikea's "IVAR"). Most of their furniture is on display there as well. The small stuff is on a little shelf next to it, in separate boxes. Storing the boxes is more of a problem ... once I get more dolls that won't all fit on the shelf/display area I'll probably have to move the empty boxes to the garage and start storing boxed dolls in my room. But we're not quite there yet :)

    5. Don't be tricked into thinking yellowing is some horrific thing! It's not that bad and will happen regardless of where you keep your dolls; sunlight just speeds up the process. My dolls sit on my living room shelf. It's a bright room, but no direct sunlight. I could keep them locked away, but then there'd be no point in me having them! ;)

    6. I don't put my dolls in boxes, except for the two that are "retired" (that is, I upgraded them and the SD forms are "active", but the MSD forms were too sentimental to sell, even if they no longer get played with) and one that is reserved as an adult form when my YoSD "grows up".

The rest sit in my doll room on shelves that have been decorated to look like bedrooms, living rooms, bar areas, etc.

If the doll has his/her own room, their stuff stays there. If not, they each have their own shoebox sized storage tub in the closet with their stuff. The closet in my sewing room houses all of the furniture and larger props that aren't in regular use.

    7. I used to worry about yellowing too, until I bought an old doll off ebay - the one in my avatar :aheartbea Yes she is yellowish, less so in daylight, more so by artificial light (which is yellow too) But she's gorgeous and I love her, so I am no longer worried about yellowing. The only time you will have BAD yellowing is if you leave a doll in direct sunshine, like on a windowsill. If the doll is partly dressed you will end up with patchy yellowing, as the exposed limbs will be more yellow than the ones covered by clothing - that is what I'd call bad yellowing. Otherwise it's just nice and mellow, and varies greatly between manufacturers - I believe it's actually the layer of sealant they use which goes yellow, rather than the resin, so you can even clean it up like new with a lot of scrubbing and chemicals.

So my dolls live on a shelf in a brightly lit room, but well away from the window and direct sunlight. The sun is lower in the sky at the moment now it's that time of year (same in Spring time) and the sun reaches further into the room than it did in high summer, so at the moment I keep my curtains shut all day, just incase the sun comes out! I keep all my doll clothes, wigs etc. in a stack of shoeboxes and pretty cardboard boxes.

    8. I don't use my dolls every single day, but I don't box them up either. Partly because I have a ton of them and boxing/unboxing them all would take forever, but mostly because I like looking at them and I can't do that if they're all in a box. They sit on a shelf in my room, and the most I do by way of special treatment is keeping my blinds closed as much as possible. I tried to store all of their things in boxes but I never did get around to creating a system, so now their stuff is a bit jumbled. I really need to fix that.

Anyway, I know everyone really freaks out about yellowing (and I was pretty obsessed about it too when I got my first doll almost six years ago), but I also think life becomes much easier and more enjoyable when you realize two things: 1) No matter how you store your doll, it WILL yellow eventually. That's what resin does. 2) My oldest doll is will be 6 next month and while she has definitely yellowed (I can compare her to any other doll in my collection and notice a difference, even compared to other dolls in the same color from the same company), her yellowing has been very even and hasn't turned her into a lemon or banana or whatever. I'm not even sure I would notice it much if I was looking at her alone. I think that as long as you're not sitting your dolls in hours of direct sunlight every day they'll be fine for years to come.

    9. I actually have none of my dolls in boxes (Except one who I'm trying to sell.) I don't see a point of having expensive dolls, and keeping them in a box where you can't see them every day.
With that being said, I keep mine on the second shelf of my bookshelf, which is situated in the corner of my room. I do have a light on the top shelf, but the shelf separating helps. I'm not too worried about them yellowing anyways, it's going to happen sooner or later.
If you're super worried about them yellowing, though, it would probably be safest to keep them in a protected box with padding inside, and then keep that box in a drawer.

    10. All my dolls are in my daughter's room where there is a big big shelf ( ikea expedit...) and furnitures in boxes which are under it !

    11. I honestly believe that there's no point in getting a doll, if it's just gonna be boxed in some closet... Mine is not home yet, but I have a spot saved for her on my desk. It's a pretty dim corner of the room with no direct sunlight at any time of day, but it's no closet, so there is still light.

    12. My dolls are primarily on display on a dedicated dolls shelf (there are 3 who are on a shelf in my closet since they're either not finished or because I'm considering removing them from my collection). As for the "stuff", I have a small chest of drawers that's dedicated to doll clothes/wigs/shoes.

    13. In spite of having a pretty extensive collection, I don't box any of my dolls, either... I just don't see the point of spending that much money on something and then hiding it away where I can't see it. Instead, almost(*) my entire crew are kept in a set of matching display cabinets with adjustable shelves. (Three of these plus a pair of these, divided between a hallway nook on the main floor of my house and the upstairs room we use as a library-) They're safe from dust, visiting children and sunlight that way, but still easily accessible when I want to tinker with them. It's sort-of the best of all worlds. ^_^

Most of the crew's clothes, spare wigs, shoes and such are kept in a pair of smallish, three-drawer chests of drawers I found at World Market a few years ago. The wigs and shoes are all together, while the clothes are divided among the drawers by gender and size. That system seems to make finding any particular thing I'm after pretty simple.

As for yellowing, as everyone else has said it's just something that's going to happen. Unless you keep your doll in a dark, temperature controlled, oxygen-free archival environment, its resin is eventually going to change at least a little. As long as you take reasonable precautions (Don't let the doll sit in direct sunlight for days at a time, don't leave it in a hot car in the middle of summer, don't leave it directly under a bright florescent light for years-), your doll won't end up looking awful. Carelessness can definitely cause some problems, especially with French resin, but a little common sense goes a long, long way. These dolls are tougher than a lot of new owners give them credit for.

(*) The only dolls I haven't been able to put in the cabinets are my trio of EIDs, who are just flat-out too big to fit. They share the top of a decorative chest in that same upstairs room, since I keep the shades down and curtains drawn in there. (A lot of bright sunlight isn't great for books, either-) If I had the space for a cabinet sized just for them, I'd put them behind glass too in a heart-beat.

    14. I only have my smallest dolls in boxes(puki puki, faery legend) because I haven't found head caps small enough for them, all my other dolls (SD, MSD, Yo-SD) use the head caps when I'm not playing with them, they protect their face ups from the dust and they each have a chair or a special spot on a shelf in my room. I love to see my dolls in display, I could never keep them all in their boxes. This is an example of how I keep them but all with the protection on their faces when I'm not playing with them: pic1 pic2 pic3

    15. i have two boxes at home now which i used to store the wigs, clothes and shoes, one is a rectangular box that i bought from a souvenir shop and the other one is a shipping box of my doll XD then i also have this mini closet box where i store some of my doll's clothes. i also have this paper bag for the other clothes too. overall, my doll stuff are quite disorganized XD

    16. My dolls currently are hanging out on my sewing table. They need to find a new place to live. They really are taking up too much of my work space. Their stuff (other than the couch) is in a pretty big doll armoire that my father made. It's a bit larger than an end table. But its pretty and in my living room with a lamp on it (and two seated dolls) :)

    17. My dolls sit on my desk UvU

I wanted them to be displayed in my room and my desk was the ideal place, however Im going to make room for more space by installing shelves because I have other crazy stuff on it too XD

    18. I use those plastic drawer-things to store stuff in (the kind with 3 plastic drawers for pens and such). Wigs, extra body parts, anything really large goes in there. Then I use a craft tackle-drawer system to hold little eyes, accessories, etc. It's not really organized at the moment, though! :'(

The dolls sit on a shelf in my bedroom I turned into a little doll room. It works well enough for me, keeps them out of the sunlight, and I can wake up to see them every morning. :D

    19. I only brought two of my dolls with me when I moved two years ago (my Lishe and my Glati), and they sit on top of a bookshelf. I'm planning on bringing a few back with me next time I visit my parents', however, which means I'm going to have to come up with a new solution. I'll probably clear out a shelf for them and keep them there, maybe decorate the space somehow. Should be fun :)

    20. I keep my dolls in a solid cuboid case together with pillows in it. I keep the dresses etc in a sealed plastic bag provided when I bought my first doll.
. . . (huh that reminds me that there's stuff I never use in there and should take out. ah well)
