How hard is it for you?

Jan 23, 2014

    1. How hard is it for you to buy/make clothes for your doll? When buying clothing do you look at the price or is it the style that makes it hard. and what about making clothes is the measurements or are you just not that sewing savvy?

For me when buying clothes it's both sometimes the price is just to high and they style that i have seen is more of a punk style and my dolls personality more of a casual thing. LOL

When making clothes its all about the measurements that kill me ug i wish i could just go get a pattern kit and then i wouldn't have that problem.

      What about you?

    2. I can't sew myself so i do rely on other people heavily. For me the main thing I look for when trying to buy clothes for a doll it is important that it reflects the doll's character. For example my doll that I am saving up for ophelia would not be caught dead in anything boho chic or rock, she is very prissy and bossy. Her little sister Amy (tiny delf whom already lives with me) is a good girl and dresses very traditional and conservative as that is how I would dress my child if I had one.

    3. buying is easy bcs i don't buy at all :) ok i sew by myself, so only problem are fabrics, sometimes i want something that's expensive like hell haha but usually i just improvise if i can say so. most hard things for me are patterns, but is a case of patience and practice. ofc sometimes i'm angry that sth doesn't work and leave it even for months. i'm much like u - with good patterns all works fine.

    4. I have a Supia which are very Slim so I tried a lot of brands and often have to take in stuff I really like and if its just waaay to big resell it. I make clothes for her myself but just the basic stuff. I find it hard to make it look professional because its all so small and often drop the ball on the finishing touches like buttons and zippers. Big fan of elastic waistbands because its so much easier but it just doesn't look as good as.for instance jeans with actual tiny pockets and a button or zipper close.

    5. I am not good at sewing... I can sew if I need to but it's not something I enjoy, I get frustrated with it really really fast! So I'll be buying most of my clothes or bribing a good friend of mine who has AMAZING sewing talent to make things for me. Price is a factor.. or at least it is until I find something that's dead on perfect and exactly what I'm looking for. Then it just becomes the nature of the beast. ;)

    6. It depends on the doll for me! For example, Kier is a pretty standard size and his main wardrobe consists of jeans, tshirts, baggy pants, sweats and hoodies, so he's so super easy to sew for or shop for.

Others...are harder. I have several boys in the 63-65cm range, which is difficult because SD clothes are too short in arms and legs, but they're all slim enough that 70cm clothes just fall off. TTYA makes perfect SD17 clothes for them, but styles are limited. It is nearly impossible to find western wear for a slim 64cm boy! Pharaoh Ay STILL needs "authentic" ancient Egyptian clothing, and I completely fail at making it and so far have had no luck in commissioning it (either due to differences in opinion, cost or options). The only suitable clothing I've found already made was for the Mega Gem body, and while Ay is Soom Ender, he's a hybrid on a much slimmer body, so it doesn't work.

I have 6 girls and they're all different sizes, even though all are SD. So they mostly can't share anything, at least not having it look good on them all. Hailey is 58cm and very very slim, so almost all clothes I buy for her have to be altered. Alex is slim, but has huge boobs, so stuff is too small in the top, but loose on the bottom. Jenna is standard size, except she's 63.5cm, so everything is too short on her. Mariella is 56cm and tiny all over, and she swims in standard clothing. Scarlett is Iplehouse SID, and it seems there's very little to fit her (unless I'm just looking in the wrong places), and when I find stuff that does fit, it's not her style or is way out of my price range. She's not home yet, so I can't sew for her (I sew from trying things on, not measurements). Jenna and Scarlett both have big feet for girls, so finding shoes is hard. Apparently, from what I've read, only Lynnette will nicely fit standard SD girl clothes! At least there's that?

I think the most frustrating thing for any of my dolls is when they need a specific unpopular style in a non-standard size. All of my characters (except for Ay) are modern day humans, which should be easy, but it's not! I don't want period clothing, fantasy, lolita, goth/punk, traditional, school boy/girl, formal....I need hipster, hip-hop, scene, skater, preppy, athletic....not so easy! I can sew basics myself, but I don't have the skill for the more detailed stuff.

    7. I haven't really bought anything specifically for any of my dolls yet (though I do have a good selection of F2B clothes for the bigger ones, and have gotten my hands on some stuff for the smaller ones, all of which I call the "community clothing pool" to keep incoming dolls from being naked). Buying for them has proven to be pretty much impossible, since one set is a group of OCs who have a particular fantasy style that I can't find represented anywhere, and the other is a set of character dolls who likewise don't really have their clothes represented.

I honestly haven't gotten started on making their proper clothing yet, though that is my ultimate intent with all of them. It's the only way I'll get them into their proper clothes, honestly! So for me, I'd say it's easier to make them, though I need to get going on that finally.

    8. Even if there are around lot of clothes in styles that can fit my Dahlia, they are expensive for me, and I'm so afraid to order something in the wrong size that I decided to sew all by me, even if my sewing skills are just basic. When sewing for her, her curvaceous body gives me some difficulties, but the doll that really challenges me when doing clothing for him is my Dikadoll Mian Mian, because he is a tiny and I find really hard sewing in such a small scale, especially because I'm a masochist and I try to do for him really detailed outfit -_-
I have also difficulties in finding the right fabrics. I usually end using old clothing to harvest materials and I have tons of t-shirt fabrics, but almost no satin -_- anyway, the bigger, real difficulty is only one: lack of time :sweat

    9. I sew virtually everything. Once I've got a working pattern, I'm good to go. Except for the cosplay dolls, they don't wear anything complicated (harem pants and such), so I can spend my time on fun things like beading the outfits. Shoes are fun to make too.

    10. I can't sew anything at all, so I have to buy. And yes, shopping is hard. HARD. Between odd sizes and things that just don't exist (my dolls characters are post-apocalyptic future -- try finding that anywhere) I am pretty much SOL when it comes to clothes. It's made me actually hate some of my dolls recently, sitting around in one dusty outfit is not how I envisioned them.

Price is definitely a factor as well. I do have a handful of dolls that do/would wear clothes in the styles that are available, but holy hell I don't have the cash to spend on outfits for everyone. I would love it if more places sold parts, but everyone loves a fullset I guess.

Then there's the size thing. One size does not fit all. In life as well as dolls. My dolls are all too skinny, too chunky, too tall or too short for everything. Nothing fits anyone. Which is why I am so reluctant to shell out $$$ for outfits. They don't fit anyway!! Example? My Volks SD13 Chris is wearing 70cm pants and a shirt. They fit him, perfectly. So they don't fit the dolls they were bought for. Luckily they fit someone, and even more luckily him because I don't have a lot in his style that he can wear (unluckily they're all black and collect all the cat hair. Not really part of this thread, but still annoying).
Another one of my dolls sits around totally unused in next to nothing because he's cyber-punk and where the H do I get clothes for that?? Yeah. Not sewing is death in this hobby...Naked dolls for everyone!!! Or just me.

So yes, in the last two years especially, clothing has gotten to be a HUGE gripe with me. It's incredibly hard and it drives me insane.

    11. I haven't tried making clothes for my doll yet... Buying is fairly easy. If it's cute, I'll add it to my to-buy list. That doesn't mean I'll always buy it though! Sometimes something else will pop up and I'll want to buy that instead! If something is over 100 quid (200 USD?) I'll most likely miss out on buying it for my doll. The doll I've ordered has a personality that doesn't really fit the clothes I want to get her, but I haven't ordered any other clothes and I think she'd look cute in them anyway. Oops! On Etsy usually they have a separate listing for MSD dolls so I don't find the size too hard (but it bugs me when people sell lots of SD clothes but not many MSD. :( )

    12. Buying is always tempting. There is so much beautiful stuff around! 'Fortunately' most of it is quite expensive, which keeps me from buying too much ;). That, and my inexplicable preference for odd-sized dolls.

I don't find it difficult to make clothes for my dolls, in the sense that I don't have much difficulty determining what they are going to wear in terms of style and colours. BUT I'm a lousy seamstress, so the practical aspect can be difficult indeed. I think I had three stabs at Morgana's dress before I managed one that would do - and it's a simple tunic! Most of my dolls have different measurements, too, so each has to have their own patterns drafted. That's why there are gaps in my dressmaking activities. When I have pulled off one, I need some time to gather my courage to start on the next :p.

    13. I have very little sewing knowledge, but the incredibly high price of doll clothes and my love of something that can no longer be used for me has prompted me to try my hand at improving my skills. I've started collecting old books on it from Good Will and the like. I think sewing is a very handy trait that can not only help you with dolls, but your own wardrobe, so it's something I'd like to do. I try to be more conservative when it comes to clothes because my doll list is still... lengthy... and I'd rather buy dolls than clothes, but by the year's end I'd like to have a token outfit for each of my dolls and I'm slowly working toward that.

    14. How hard is it for you to buy/make clothes for your doll?

Hard to make clothes. I don't have a sewing machine and hand-sewing takes FOREVER. Plus, I'm really not that experienced a sewer, so that makes it harder, too. Plus--finding patterns in the right style. Plus--finding the right weight/scale fabrics and notions is pretty impossible unless you live near a HUGE fabric store (and I don't mean the typical chains).

Buying--Not quite as difficult, since if you see something you can buy it or save up for it. Of course, it is not easy to find the right styles in the right sizes for the right price... but there are probably more styles out there than patterns. I really need to look long and hard, but I can usually find the things I want, eventually (it may take YEARS, however).

When buying clothing do you look at the price or is it the style that makes it hard.

Mostly style and size, but price can definitely make things a bit difficult!

What about making clothes is the measurements or are you just not that sewing savvy?

For me, not having the sewing savvy. Plus, I have lots of boys and tailoring suits with collars and lapels isn't easy for even a pretty savvy sewer. Then, as I said, finding all the materials and notions in the right size...

By the time I find all the right items, I've spent a lot more time and money than I expected, and I still need to sew it! *_*

    15. How hard is it for you to buy/make clothes for your doll?
Well…the sad thing is that I do have a pretty fancy sewing machine - but I'm not a very good seamstress. I'm too picky about the quality of the clothes for me to sew it myself. HENCE I buy my dolls clothes. My dolls are all pretty awkward sizes, so it's hit and miss with just about all of them. And they all have a style that's not as simple to find as a punky/gothic look. I mostly have to hit up several places and purchase an item here & there to come up with their "look". It's not that it's all that creative - it's pretty vanilla, but getting it just right is the challenge.

When buying clothing do you look at the price or is it the style that makes it hard?
It's mostly the style and the quality that make it hard. Most of the doll clothes I see are not things my core group would wear or the quality doesn't look good.

What about making clothes is the measurements or are you just not that sewing savvy?
I'm too picky to sew my dolls clothes, meaning my sewing isn't great. I'd rather hire someone who is a professional. Plus I don't have the time to master the level of detail that I want for my dolls clothes, not to mention getting the scale right with texture/notions/fabric weight.

    16. How hard is it for you to buy/make clothes for your doll?
Well since I cannot sew to save myself I have to buy all my boys cloths. Sometimes this can be quite difficult with sizing etc... Another problem is finding the thing you want. Sometimes I have to commission someone to make the piece that I want.

When buying clothing do you look at the price or is it the style that makes it hard?
I would say it's a combination of both. Some things I like are very expensive (apart from the actual dolls themselves!) and I cannot always justify getting an item. Other times it's because what I envision is just not out there and that's where commissions come in.

What about making clothes is the measurements or are you just not that sewing savvy?
I never learnt to sew and it is just not something I have the patience to learn.

    17. I sew virtually everything. I like to sew clothes for myself and for my dolls. They all have a different style of clothing :)
I do not buy clothes for dolls. And I find it too expensive.

    18. Kavarr commissioning some one to make what you want was not something i thought about,

    19. When it comes to buying clothes for my dolls, I do take price into account but I try to find things that my dolls would look nice in. Every once in a while I will treat them to an expensive outfit. As for sewing, for me it's hit and miss. Certain clothes are very easy for me, while others not so much. I'm decent at sewing but not great.

    20. I am just in the process of solving the same problem.
I want to buy another doll and I want to get proper clothes, shoes and wig for the previous one. I just don't have so much money. And even if had, I would buy more dolls that would need more clothes and it could go on and on without stoping.
I can sew a little bit with my hands but it takes time. I'd use sewing patterns but they are hard to get and my doll has unusual measurements so it wouldn't help anyway.
I could buy clothes if they are not very expensive but in most cases they are not suitable for my doll, their style and color, and sizes of course.
So I decided to wait with a new doll and buy a sewing machine at first. And learn how to deal with it )))
As for absence of proper patterns. I prefer sewing on the doll, fitting it and than changing for it to look better.
I also found useful to look through the sewing forums for man (not dolls), there are clothes that can be done without sewing at all, there are very simple clothes. You can look in the web and find anough for starting. I realized when I started making clothes from simpliest of simple I can understand better and better each day how it works, how to make more complicated clothes. I look through the galleries of doll lovers to find new ideas, when I see what others have sewn I ask myself is it difficult or easy to make? Do I know how to make it? And try to do.
It just takes time and effort, and some courage to degin, to make the first step. What one man has done another one can do also. But it can take some time to learn.
