How long and How many?

Feb 20, 2024

    1. Got curious about averages in the community. Please tell me a few things if you'd like.

How long did you take to finally get a doll?

How many dolls did you get after a year?

      How many after 5 years?

      How many in 10 years?

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)

Not exactly statistics you can just Google, haha.

    2. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
Not sure, maybe a couple years of thinking about it. I joined DoA in 2017, but didn't get my first doll until 2018.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
Checking my doll profiles here I got 6 dolls my first year.

      How many after 5 years?
I know that I have 50 dolls and one on order, not counting the bjd pets. I've been collecting BJD's for 6 years.

      How many in 10 years?
I haven't been in the hobby this long. I have slowed down buying doll a bit.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?
      I don't sell them.

    3. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
Can't exactly remember but I think I first saw (A)BJDs around 2004-2005, but wasn't interested in them back then. Come 2009 I was interested - and I bought my first one that year.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
      4 full dolls.

      How many after 5 years?
4 full dolls and a floating head. Not all were the same 4 I bought in my first year.

      How many in 10 years?
The same 4 full dolls and a floating head from the 5-year mark. At this time I was on a very long hiatus away from the hobby and didn't buy or sell anything.

Currently (2024, my 15th year with BJDs) I have 7 dolls and 2 floating heads at home. Of these, 2.5 of them were from before-hiatus - the 0.5 is the head that got a body and is now a full doll.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?
I've sold 5 full dolls and a body.
If you're reeeeeeally interested in my personal collection demographics  I've posted all the boring details here in this thread.

    4. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
I bought my first after about 4-5 months of saving up.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
3 full dolls and 1 head

      How many after 5 years?
11 full dolls and 1 head

      How many in 10 years?
9 full dolls and 1 head. I bought no new dolls between 5 and 10 years and banished 2.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?
Only 2 dolls did not remain with me.

    5. Mine will be extremely approximate as I'm going off the top of my head.

How long did you take to finally get a doll? I randomly bought one second hand, so 0 years?
I first saw them in a magazine about 6 years before but didn't ever think about it. I joined DoA around a year after I already had a doll. It was invite only at the time which delayed me.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
1 doll first year, 2nd doll 1 year later then regularly buying after that

      How many after 5 years?
      I had about 20 5 years in

      How many in 10 years?
      I had about 30 10 years in

(*Bonus: I am in my 13th year and now have reduced to only 14 whole large dolls of what was about 30 before.)

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? I sold something every year, usually a few per year that I didn't want to keep working on, in recent years more quickly to reduce size. I don't know off the top of my head what percentage of my dolls I've sold I over time. I never sold everything and started over, just gradual change.

    6. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
I first found out about them in the early 2000's. But because I was living on very bad Internet at that time, I couldn't find good information about them for the longest time. I finally got my first doll in 2014.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
Just that one! The second doll didn't arrive until late 2015. And because one of her hands was crushed on her way to me, she wasn't really "complete" until 2016.

      How many after 5 years?
Only the first two, a boy and a girl.

      How many in 10 years?
I restarted in the hobby about 2 years ago. Without counting the hiatus from 2016 to 2021, I am sitting at 13 full dolls and 4 floating heads, one spare body (with another 2 on their way)

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?
      I haven't sold any.

      Hope this helps?

    7. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
I registered on DoA in December 2019, bought my first doll mid January 2020 and received my "second" doll mid February. My "first" doll arrived in April.
I've been into BJDs for a bit longer, as I remember 3D printing a small one before and admiring the artist on Instagram who eventually bought a "real" BJD.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
I had two, even though I only planned to have one. I didn't know that the waiting time would be that long at first, so I bought another doll second hand.

      How many after 5 years?
I'm reaching the 5 years soon and as of now, I have two dolls and a third on its way.

      How many in 10 years?
I haven't been in the hobby for that long.

And if you've sold, how many did you sell?
      Haven't sold any.

    8. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
More or less three years since I first found out these dolls existed (I was still in high-school so I didn't have funds) till I hit the button and the waiting for my first doll began, though I joined this forum at some point in between to get the info.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
Just that first one. I had to wait for months before I could gather some more money to get it a good enough face-up and a wig and proper clothes, so I had a hard time bonding with that first doll before I decided I would buy a second.

      How many after 5 years?
5 dolls (plus a couple of bodies and two floating heads, but I've sold most of them).

      How many in 10 years?
I've stopped collecting at 6 full dolls four years ago, but I recently bought another body for my MSD girl (so now I have one spare body for sale).

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)
In my eleven years in this hobby, I've sold 1 complete doll (split), 3 bodies or so, and 2 heads, plus the doll body I have for sale right now and I'll probably sell another full doll soon if I pass the 'no contact' stage with it.

I think that these parameters are not really good for making statistics as you'll find each BJD journey is so different from one another. Still, it's interesting to read, so I hope my grain of salt can interest others well.

    9. How long did you take to finally get a doll? Maybe a month after coming across bjds but not sure where I did see them first.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
4 bjds I think but I also started newly collecting off topic dolls in large quantities.
      How many after 5 years?
It's only been 3 years since I really started
I have no recent acquisitions but I am always shopping.
      How many I've sold?
      I haven't sold any.

    10. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
      2-3 years? I'm not sure.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
It's a long time ago... Maybe 6? I have no longer the data.

      How many after 5 years?
I can't tell how much I bought, because I also sold a lot, but in 2012 I owned around 20 BJD.

      How many in 10 years?
38 owned in 2017! But same, that's the number I owned at the moment, not how many I bought during 10 years.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)
I think I sold one out of 2 dolls. But that depends of the years. Sometimes I sold little, sometime I sold nearly all what I bought in a year. ( I keep track of the age of the doll I still own, and I have still 9 dolls from 2016, for example, and only one from 2018. Or I know I bought 25 dolls/heads in 2011, and I kept only one)

    11. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
About 5-7 years? I think I first discovered BJDs somewhere between 2001-2003, but there was absolutely no possible way I could get one until after I was out of school and on my own. I got my first "gateway" dolls (Obitsu 1/6) in 2006, and my first resin BJD in 2008.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
I had 3 MSDs after my first year: AoD Chen, Dollzone Mo and Bobobie Pixie. I still have Chen, I regret selling Mo and never felt any sort of bond to Pixie and haven't missed her even once.

How many after 5 years? How many in 10 years?
Things get hazy here, so I'm answering these in one reply. I'm not a "collector"....I buy things, enjoy them for a bit, then sell/trade them for something new. I can't stand too much clutter and I get overwhelmed if things get too messy, disorganized, unfinished or there's just too much stuff overall, but I also get bored with the same old thing and need regular change in my life. At the most (probably around year 4-5 in the hobby) I had 39 SD range dolls and two MSD. It was overwhelming. I'm currently about to hit 16 years in the hobby and have 20 SD, one MSD and a hoard of tinies (about 30, on topic and off, but they're easy--most don't need clothes, wigs or accessories, and they're mostly just get them, finish them and done.) My SD/human crew require a lot more clothing, accessories and space, plus I like to play with them, change them regularly, give them fully fleshed out characters and stories. The tiny crew get a name and basic personality, then displayed on a shelf or diorama.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)
A lot. A LOT a lot! My house is a revolving door. On average, I think I'd say a doll stays with me maybe 6 months to a year. I have some I love and have for years, and others I know the minute I open the box won't be staying. As mentioned above, I have 21 dolls plus a bunch of random mostly off topic tinies. In my time in the hobby, I have owned probably at least 300 sculpts. Probably more, actually. Of my current crew, one of them is my first doll and been with me almost 16 years. The next longest running has been with me going on 5 years, the majority for a year or less, if that tells you anything.

    12. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
Nearly 17 years :sweat couldn't afford them as a teen and then... life took priority in finances but I remembered about them in my 30s, during a good-income-year and... Voila, obsessed again. I was moving around constantly until only a little bit ago so I wouldn't have seen myself have a collection within no stabile housing either.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
5 :abambi: (too many!) I do wish I had collected more slowly but I also guess I had to make up for abandoning something I really wanted to get into 15+ years ago... I'm also happy to not have to hassle with buying more any time soon as yearning for more gets exhausting as well.

      How many after 5/10?
I'm not there yet, so who knows! But I don't see myself having more than 10 (5 is already overwhelming tbh)... Maybe one day I'll have the space to branch out into a few 1/3 dolls, though.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)
I sold my first minifee because it just wasn't for me. I haven't felt the need to sell a full doll after that but I have swapped bodies around a bit.

    13. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
I discovered BJD, towards the middle or end of 2002, but I got my first resin head sculpt (a CP VDES) towards winter 2003-04, so I would say about a year or of discovering these dolls. However, I got a Volks DDI at around six months after first discovering BJD, which was kind of my first baby steps back then (with an equally giant doll, as any other just a much lighter one).

How many dolls did you get after a year?
I would say less than one a year, for the first three years. Then i was even less than that, and I completely lost interest in getting more after I got six full dolls. I didn't get any more after 2010 when I got my last one back then which was a Fairyland Chic Line Rou. I got the actual last one for my remaining lifetime last year, a MYou mature tiny (unless EOS magically rereleases Mano on a broader body or is willing to just sell the head sculpt, or DZ rereleases their Mo-Wen or just the head sculpt).

      How many after 5 years?
      Wild guess, five.

      How many in 10 years?
      Seven.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)
I sold a single body, because I am not into baby-ish dolls, and I wasn't doing anything with the doll. I couldn't sell the whole doll, because I don't ever plan on selling stuff, I've modified myself and the head I did mod. I have zero plans to sell anymore, and if the doll hadn't been a baby-styled one, I wouldn't have sold the body either. Even if I didn't do anything with it, ever (iamashamelesshoarder)! DX

    14. How long did you take to finally get a doll? About... 9 years, honestly. Mostly because I had never found one that struck my attention and gave me big feelings of want enough to put the money down. Apparently I wasn't looking in the right places, because then I found one easily and ordered it. Haven't looked back.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
After a year? ... Two. Well, more one owned and one ordered.

How many after 5 years? I somehow have 10 full dolls after 5 years. Which surprises me. I never realized I had managed that.

I've not sold any yet, so I can't answer that question.

    15. You are 100% correct, plus the likely sample size if so small and any weird number would skew everything. This is a niche hobby in this part of the world and it would be difficult to gain the appropriate number of responses and since I only speak English, I have to leave out huge swaths of people. But it is fascinating none the less and interesting to compare journeys.

I'm just all heart eyes over here reading what people have done with all the different roads leading to Rome :3

    16. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
As soon as I f found one I wnted to buy - this was back in 2004, so there weren;'t as many companies making dolls as there are now, so it didn;t take long to go through the available options BUT I didn;t want to deal with the language barrier (in case of problems with my order, and the seller's first-language not being English caused complications) plus I wanted to see pictures of the actual dol with the actual faceup I'd be getting - not generic company listing pictures - so it took a few extra weeks to find the doll I wanted second hand (on Ebay)

(EDITED TO ADD: I've been a lifelong doll collector so I alreayd had a house full of dolls of differnet trype beofre I discovered BJDs, so the decision to buy was almost immediate, just finding the right one took a couple of months)

How many dolls did you get after a year?

      Four

      How many after 5 years?

      Didn't keep track,

      How many in 10 years?

I'd definitely hit the 30 mark by then, possibly up toward 50

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold? (1 out of 5 dolls, 3 dolls total ECT)

Rarey. I find it hard to let go, eve though they arent;a good fit. It somehow seems like a betrayal of the doll. A rejection of them, to have given them a home and invested them with a personality and then decide they need to move on and live somewhere else with somebody else....

I found that dolls in the 8inch size range don't tend to work for me - I don't do anything with them so they eventually move on, but I bought several, and kept thm for a while before they moved on, and it took that happening several times before I figured out that I just need to avoid that size, no matter how cute I find the individual dolls

I'm also terrible about getting around to listing dolls to sell them, so most that have moved on have been through chance mentions (on person, at meets etc. or chatting online to people I alredy know). and usually tht's a long tim after I've decided to sell them.

Uncharacteristiclly. I realized (sometime in the summer of 2023) that there are around ten dolls I've not really done much with in a few years, and that I should probably move them on.
      - One sold in Novemebr to a friend I mentioned this to (potentially a second one she asked abotu the other week),
      - One is going to someone who saw a mention on one of my Instagram posts that a particular doll was on my re-homing list
      - One might be going to another friend soon

So, that's three (potentially four) moving on over a period of about months from my making the decision (a very short space of time for me) yet I STILL haven't gotten around to making a sales listing for any of the ten I originally identified as potentially going.

    17. How long did you take to finally get a doll?

I think the first time I saw a BJD was in around 2005… I had discovered anime in 2003 and I wanted dolls like those characters. I was veeeery young then so there was no way that my parents were gonna let me get one at that point. In 2008 I got my first collector doll which was a Blythe and then a few years later I was collecting 1/6 Hot Toys and the like. I went to a convention in mid 2018 and saw someone with a DD who let me hold her and from that point on I was in love. I did some research and I got my first BJD in early 2019… soooo 14 years I guess.

How many dolls did you get after a year?

After a year in the hobby I had around 15 dolls. I lost track but I bought and sold a lot as I was trying to work out what I liked and didn’t like.

      How many after 5 years?

I am at about 25 now, some are unfinished project dolls so idk whether to include them. I want to say I’m satisfied currently but I’m always wanting something lol But unlike 5 years ago I have 2-3 hobbies now so doll buying has settled a bit.

      How many in 10 years?

Knowing me…. Probably a lot more xD

    18. How long did you take to finally get a doll?

I knew about bjd for several years but when I decided to collect them I made my first purchase within a few days.

How many dolls did you get after a year?

Eleven, I purchased thirteen dolls my first year and sold two of them

      How many after 5 years?

I’m on my third year and have thirty dolls

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?

I sell one to three dolls a year. I have consistently bought a doll each month, but end up with ten dolls for each year I have been collecting, so on average I sell one of six dolls.

I plan on buying less from now on. In my newbie years I just had so many options but things have slowed down and I am selling a lot more to keep my collection manageable.

    19. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
Not long at all…probably within a month. I was very keen.

How many dolls did you get after a year?
Roughly 3 dolls per year minimum

      How many after 5 years?
      Around 15

      How many in 10 years?
Probably 30…but I joined way back in 2006, so by now the total is approaching 60.:sweat

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?
Very rarely (and only as needed to refine my collection or if a character didn’t work out.) Now that I’ve honed my personal aesthetic, I haven’t sold a doll in years.

    20. How long did you take to finally get a doll?
Half a year to one year? I don't remember the exact dates but I learned of their existence around 2011 and then got one November of 2012

How many dolls did you get after a year?

I still had just my first one.

      How many after 5 years?

      Same answer as above.

      How many in 10 years?

2! and now 12 years later it's about to be 4, I finally got access to adult money lmao.

And if you've sold how often did you find you sold?

I've sold one. I learned the hard way I just don't like minifees. My first doll was a standard MSD, so having a slim one broke the immersion if that makes sense. All my other dolls besides him are SD so he's proportionate to an actual child and not like a miniature adult.
