1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How long do you generally keep faceups for?

Mar 9, 2015

    1. I'm curious about how others view faceups! Do you view them as temporary or more permanent? How often do you generally get them re-done, and do you send them out or do it yourself? When you redo them do you ever feel bad about erasing the previous one, or do you view it as a normal part of owning BJD?
If this has been brought up before, my apologies. I did try to look for a similar topic :)

    2. I've only had my dolls for about a year so I haven't really thought about cleaning off most of their faceups. I've done one of my doll's faceups twice and I plan on repainting another doll. The ones that come with company faceups, I leave alone because I really like them. I never feel bad about erasing a faceup I've done myself. I know that if I really liked it, I can always do it again. I would probably feel weird about erasing a company faceup though. I think changing the faces is just a normal part of this hobby.

    3. I do my own faceups, so I'll redo and redo them until I feel I've gotten it right. Once I feel I've gotten it right, I leave it alone unless it gets damaged and needs a touch up.

    4. I see them as permanent. I generally keep mine if they are to my liking. If they are not, then I will wipe them and change them. I am working on learning faceups this year. Before this, I have mainly gotten company faceups, none of which I am 100% satisfied with, so I'm happy to take the plunge and learn to do them myself so that I can be certain they are to my liking.

    5. I don't know.. I don't think I will ever change it....

    6. As long as I feel like they're suitable, really. I do my own, so I can redo them whenever I want, but I also am rapidly nearing 30 dolls at home--almost all of which were acquired blank. So any doll that's currently blank is taking priority over the ones that have proper faceups, no matter what state they're currently in. Some of the oldest ones, though, with faceups that are about 7 years old or so now, are likely going to get redone when I take them apart for a good solid cleaning and restringing in the near future. The faceups are still in good shape, but are some of my first ones, so a redo isn't a terrible idea at this point, and since I'll be sealing and blushing their bodies in the process of refreshing them, I'll switch up the faceups at the same time so they match.

    7. Until they wear off - LOL I do NOT do my own faceups :D

    8. I will keep a faceup unless I don't feel like it suits the character or until it gets damaged, so I view them as permanent for the most part. I usually sent them out, but have started doing a few myself to build up my skill. The oldest faceup I have was commissioned a little over 4 years ago and it still looks perfect. My Latidoll Largo's faceup needs to be re-done (he currently has the default), because I feel the sculpt has so much more potential. I'll be sending him to my favorite artist in the near future.

    9. I keep them as long as they're in good shape and as long as I like them... Sometimes it takes a few tries to land on the right "look", and the failed attempts don't tend to stick around for long. Months at most... But once a head has the look I want? They can keep that faceup indefinitely. The oldest in my crew are 10+ years old and still look good.

    10. It's cool to read everyone's replies! I make cloth dolls and am used to seeing doll faces as permanent so it's cool to get different perspectives. I have been thinking of faceups a lot since I just got my first second hand doll and I feel a bit bad about my plans to remove her faceup because it is very pretty :P

    11. If I do the face-up my own I don't care to wipe it but I just sent one of my dolls to an artist and I'm defiantly not going to get rid of it.

    12. I only had one doll who had a new face-up every couple of years and that's because I never felt any of them really suited him. I finally sold him. All my other dolls still have their original face-ups I got for them years ago and I have no real intentions of changing them. I like them all very much, and as I don't do them myself I get very stressed out sending them to an artist so I avoid it as much as I can. If one of them became badly chipped or rubbed off then I would have to send them off again out of necessity, but as of right now I like them all so I don't me sending them out from getting bored or something.

    13. since I only have Musou and he has the company face up (as will the next 5 dolls i have planned) I'm not sure yet... I'm not totally satisfied with Musou's face... but maybe once he's got his brother and i can see them together i'll be more satisfied. I have no plans on learning to do face-ups myself yet though... I don't trust myself. I can't even colour in the lines in a childrens colouring book xD

    14. Until I saw this thread the thought that face ups weren't meant to be permanent had never crossed my mind. I've still got a lot to learn I suppose.

As much fun as I find the idea of being able to switch faces on characters to be, I'd probably leave them unless they needed touching up because when it gets down to it I'm lazy...yet when I do bring myself to do something I get ridiculously perfectionist on it. What should take 30 minutes becomes 3 hours, etc etc. I'd rather not walk into that time sinkhole willingly.

On the other hand I would love to buy a 2nd head to change any time I want for the sake of practicing new styles. That'd I'd be all for.:love

    15. Forever. I might get a new doll and change it or fix it but for the most part if I'm happy with it stays.

    16. I do my own faceups so I know how much of a pain it is to remove faceups.
I usually leave them alone unless there is some damage like chips or dislodgment of eyelashes.
I have redone faceups because I didn't like the outcome...but after I'm satisfied...I can leave them like that forever.

    17. For me they are pretty much forever.
Some of my guys characters are based on their looks and it would be very hard to see them with another face-up. Then they aren't the same character anymore.
One of my guys had to have his face-up redone, but he never looked the same after he came back from the artist. I ended up doing it myself, trying to get it as close to the original as possible. I couldn't deal with him looking different.

    18. Four of my dolls have company default faceups, one has a company custom faceup. The others have artist faceups...
I have no intention to change them anytime soon. My view of their look is very specific and if the faceup got damaged I would just have it done like it was before.

    19. Being fairly new to the hobby, I've only recently decided to have a friend redo my first girl's face(mostly because it got scratched). And if I like it then, I'll prolly just keep it that way. Now I am having her redo my guy's face because I got him secondhand and what he had just didn't suit me.

    20. I have one in the queue right now because the paint on his nose got chipped. I really only change them if they get scratched or if I louse something up and it needs fixing.
