How many dolls is too many dolls?

Feb 6, 2014

    1. I've seen some impressive collections and It made me wonder,

where do you draw the line with how many dolls you have?

for me 10 dolls is my extreme max limit. I'd like to just have about 5 sculpts I super loved. I'd adore and spoil the crap out of them, any more than 5 and I'd begin to feel I might have a problem, or I'd feel like maybe my attention and love is splintered and I'm neglecting them.

This is me personally and I've seen people with huge doll families who were super happy. I'd love to hear everyone's views and reasoning on having a huge, or small, doll family.

    2. I think everyone is going to have a different answer. I used to say about 6 would be plenty...now I have 4 and I.do not think I will stop at 6. Now I'm thinking somewhere around 10 would be my limit, but ask again when I have 9 :)

    3. It's definitely a very personal matter... when I started, I didn't think I'd ever need more than one, and now I have 16 (+2 heads) at home, with more on order, and more planned. It's a pretty big difference from "just one," and it doesn't feel like too many to me at all! But for plenty of other people, that might be way too many and time to start selling. Like nearly everything else in this hobby, it's a very personal matter, and there's no set rule of "X is too many dolls for everyone."

    4. I currently have 32 full dolls and 6 floating heads. and....it's too many. Honestly, I wish I had stopped at 13, but I'm just too attached to all of my characters to sell them off, even though my favorites get much more attention and accessories.

    5. I do not own a proper BJD yet, so I could not really say for certain, but I think there is not really a limit to me. My goal would to be get one and work on him or her until she was perfect (to me, of course). I would keep myself from buying one until I had the first to the point I was totally happy with him/her -- good wig, good face-up and blushing, the clothing I wanted them to have, any accessories or even dioramas. Then, when I was done making that one how I wanted it, I would get another one, and so on.

BJDs are such an investment of time and money; I would want to give each one the attention they deserved, but I also would not want to give myself a number limit. I am a collector at heart, and building a collection is part of what I love about the doll hobby.

    6. Now I have almost 60 bjd dolls and half of them is just floating head. I paly with some dolls and keep the others in the boxes.
But I don't think this is enough... Every month new limited edition dolls are released and I can't miss my opportunity. My collection will never be ended. haha

    7. Oh this subject....it's so hard for me to answer this because I don't think the same way as the OP about my dolls. In the first post they're referred to as a "family" and each individual doll needs the same amount of attention or they're neglected. That's not at all how I deal with my dolls. I have several favorites and though I like the rest, I don't care if I don't touch them for months at a time. I don't freak out if I can't divide my attention equally.

Then there's the "family" thing. I have dolls I don't even want sitting near each other, let alone think of them as a family. My puki-sized group is put away most of the time, and I don't even see them. When I do pull them out, they don't have anything to do with the larger dolls, they exist in a puki-sized vacuum. I have my regular minis and my slim minis sitting next to each other right now and it bugs me because they don't interact. I've been trying to come up with a way to remedy that...but I have to clear off another shelf first XD

I have over 60 dolls (I think...I don't count them and I buy and sell), but it's hard for me to see them all at once because I see the individual groups.

So how many is too many? I have no idea. I originally wanted one.....then I was planning three and then I had five. I thought 10 would be a lot and suddenly I had 15. My number keeps going higher to accommodate my collection.

I do feel frustrated and have anxiety over them sometimes, but most of the time it's one doll making me upset over the collection as a whole, and when I weed that one out and sell it, I'm ok again so I don't really think it has anything to do with a number for me, it's how I feel about the dolls, and their group.

I sometimes think I'll reach a number and think that's it, I don't want to get any more, but then I'll find one I like so I'll need to look at the rest and decide if I want to let any go to make room...and that is what will decide it for me. When I can't get rid of any of them, I'll stop.

    8. My partner and I both collects BJDs, originally we were going to have three each for a total of six. And we would only buy dolls and never sell them.
That quickly changed to five each, than eight each. Eventually some dolls didn't work out and we ended up selling a few.

Our current average is 24 dolls each, which for me is a comfortable limit. It always seems when I get a new doll, some other doll is in pieces or in the process of being sold, so it seems like less. At one point we were hitting about 30 dolls each and I started to feel overwhelmed, 60 was too much. So yeah, my happy number is 24 give or take a floating head.

    9. I don't think I have a limit. I currently have 7 total, including my tinies, and I have a bunch more planned to get. Most of the dolls on my wish list are simply because I love how they look, but a good portion is because I have a place in my head for those dolls to go with some I have, like they all belong together. I don't see myself feeling overwhelmed or any regret if I were to have every single doll on my wishlist, the only thing stopping me is money lol

    10. For me, it's too many dolls when I simply feel overwhelmed with what I have. Sometimes it's been for space reasons, sometimes it's been because I just didn't have "time" for so many dolls and the extra items they require. I think it's definitely a very personal matter and there is no right or wrong answer.

    11. I don't think I ever had a limit in mind. I just get the dolls I want (or can afford) and however many that is it's w/e. I haven't been able to sell a doll yet. Once they have a faceup and a name...they're here for good lol. I have 13 dolls and 1 floating head, not sure if/when I'll stop. I've recently become more into the bigger girls sooo I don't get new ones as often so that helps lol.

    12. My ideal is going to be 5, or if possible, just 3 doll that I really love very much and inseperable. I just afraid that having too much will make me forget with other, or it will just be decorations in my house cause it's not played with me.
The only thing that attempt me to buy more is actually the poseability of a body that always developed into a better one. I wish to have a lot just to compare pro and cons, caused having one in hand is more better than asking someone in my opinion.

    13. If there's no place to sit down comfortably, there are too many dolls. :D I used to say that it was when the doll cabinet was full, but my big dolls are too tall to fit in the cabinet at all. SInce I'm nowhere near the point of having nowhere to sit, I'm good to go.

    14. Well, I think 10 will be my limit. For the moment. My max of 5 big dolls dolls went down the drain the moment I decided to get a full set of Avengers. Right now it is 6 big dolls plus one little girl. I did not want a Hulk though. Unfortunately, there has always been the idea of a dragon doll (I mean the mystical creature, not the brand) in the back of my head. And I found the perfect sculpt for him. When I am done (all heads plus bodies, it will be 7 large dolls plus 1 YOSD). I think that's really enough then...but I can't promise.

    15. I think that three will be enough for me. Maybe 4 at the most.

    16. I used to think somewhere around seven would be my limit. How I have seven at home (+three heads) and two more on order. And many more planned...:doh:lol:

    17. I don't feel the need to limit myself but fifty or more dolls would probably make me a bit too nervous to have around unless I invested in a nice big cabinet or something.

    18. Tough question. I have 5 already, and at least 3 more planned. My limit was always 10, but who knows.

    19. Along as I have a place to put them all I do not think I have a limit on how many dolls. I currently have a very small area to live in so realistically I couldn't have over 10 but if I lived in a larger home I wouldn't have a problem getting more.

    20. I keep imagining the number 5 in my head when I think of my own future doll family. I think I'll probably stop there or around there, at least with bigger dolls.
