How Many Outfits Does Your Doll Have?

May 12, 2009

    1. So tonight as I was fiddling with my doll, I started thinking that the sweater she was wearing didn't seem to fit the time of the year. Its too warm and bulky for late spring / early summer. Then I started thinking about all the clothes she does have and whether or not she has anything appropriate for the summer months.

Am I strange for wanting her to have one outfit for each season? When I bought her I only intended on getting her one outfit and that was it, boy was I wrong!

So my question is, how many outfits do people typically have for just one of their dolls? Do you tend to buy a different outfit for every time of the year or do you just stick with one main outfit once you find the look that suits your doll? How often do you change your doll's outfit?

    2. Before I started adding to my dolls, each one have about 2-4 outfits of their own. now everyone has one each(I hope to rectify this soon). I change their outfits about twice a month. But I like to make sure that the outfits each doll wears suits them perfectly.

    3. All of my dolls except for my incoming boy, have well over 25 outfits. I don't see anything weird about it. *shrugs*

    4. ....a lot.

One of my dolls has a lot of separates that get mixed and matched. I think my Aru has seven dresses and my other mini has four or five. I, er, may have a problem.

    5. Depends, if you mean outfits they can all share with mix and match items then for the minis that about five...and for Basil (my one SD), he has two pairs of pants and one shirt.

But if you mean actual outfits that suit their specific personalities then that's a different story. I do not like to allow my boys to share clothing, their characters are just too different from one another, plus now that I've got a couple of years in the hobby I'm starting to focus on quality items that 110% suit them rather than quantity. And because I'm literally JUST starting on that journey on perfect outfits for all, I'd say as of right now the most anyone has here is two complete outfits to himself. One of my boys, despite being my olderst STILL only has a pair of pants that actually suit him and a hat...not exactly a full outfit.

I'm forcing myself to be superbly picky with choosing clothing and adding that with a limited income, let's just say the wardrobe will grow slowly. I'd like them all to definately have more than one outfit each as I really enjoy dressing them, it's just going to take some time.

    6. Many, many, many outfits. Way too many in fact. But the thing is all my dolls share so there's not really a set number of outfits for any particular doll. Some dolls do tend to wear certain outfits more than the others & the large bust Elfdoll girls have things that only they can wear.

I tend to change their outfits seasonally so they don't look too hot or cold & sometimes just to do a special grouping like having all the girls in gowns or everyone in white or black. They also have a lot of seperates that are fun to mix & match for totally new looks. My dolls have always been clothes horses. I think I live out all my clothing fantasties thru the dolls, the things that wouldn't be appropriate or comfortable enough for me to wear. (Like you'd NEVER see me in a corset, even if I had the body for it, but tight lacing on the dolls looks great & you don't have to worry about them not being able to breathe in it.)

    7. too many

Yes I do want to dress my boys according to how the weather in really life.

It is kinda strange (to me at least) looking at a doll dressed in thick winter sweaters when it is 98 degrees out here LOL

    8. Haha,
Wellllll, I just ordered my doll tonight,
she is my very first. : D
      She already has two outfits,
a third being saved up for,
      two stuffed bunnies,
a pair of shoes being saved for,
and of course wigs and eyes galore.
      XP
She is going to be one spoiled little doll.

    9. I am able to make cloths and have been lucky in acquiring sweaters and things meant for other dolls or bears that happen to fit my doll as well, so at the moment i have around twenty-one outfits. -i had no idea until i counted them! I find myself wanting to make things that fit certain seasons and holidays, and i have made a few already. I change my doll's cloths randomly, sometimes a couple times a day sometimes once every two weeks, just depends! :)

    10. i have alot of outfits in general, but all my girls share the clothes, and mix-n'-match the outfits as well, so it keeps a good variety to their outfits. i change them whenever i feel like it. they usually stay in an outfit for about a month or so before i change them.

    11. My dolls have one outfit. Each. I periodically buy new clothes, but honestly, not often. I'd rather spend money on hair or eyes for them. It wouldn't kill me to buy a few more clothes, though. Especially ones to mix and match with.

    12. My dolls have pretty spare wardrobes... it's more important for me to find the 'perfect' outfit for them than for them to have many pieces. With my elementals their clothes are part of their manifestation, so they don't really "change clothes", no matter what the weather, my dolls don't share my reality.

My human dolls have few outfits though. One will have hand-sewn historical costumes that will take awhile to make, and the other I just haven't found too much that's more perfect than what she's already wearing, which was made by the artist who created her.

In general though, I got tired of just buying dolls and then just buying stuff for them, I wanted to really be creating their whole look. Tailoring does not come easy to me, but it's very satisfying to have created exactly what I want myself, and knowing that no one else has anything remotely like it.

    13. My girl has alot of clothes, but very few cohesive outfits. I'm working on putting together an actual wardrobe consisting of individual clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched, like a real person would ideally have. Of course this would include things like an every trusty winter coat, a goes-with-everything skirt, and at least one 'little black dress'. At least 4 different types of shoes are a must.

I'm also working on a variety of different 'costumes' for her. These are things she can wear on a whim that don't necessarily relate to her character or story, but just look pretty or can express a mood, thought, or feeling. These will probably be in a rainbow of different colors and very starkly different styles, all with a very couture feel; clearly not ready-to-wear sort of stuff. Chances are, she'll have trouble standing in a few and would not feasibly be able to walk in most of them. Luckily, she is a doll and has me to carry her everywhere, thus can be dressed like a little princess who has no need for walking and does little more than stand still and look pretty. :sweat

To answer your question directly - She has alot, and more on the way.

    14. I don't have a doll yet and already she will have three dresses *so far*

    15. Right now my doll has only two outfits but she has more on the way.

I had intended to buy another doll but when it came down to it, I wanted more outfits for one doll rather than have two dolls with only a few outfits each.

But to answer your question, the amount of outfits I have so far for my doll (including ones on the way or waiting to be ordered through group orders) is six.

And yes, I do buy outfits according to the season. I just bought a few outfits for my Adelheid to wear in the summer. However, I did just buy a nice one from Souldoll that is really better suited for the fall, but at least she'll have something then. ^^

    16. I will agree with Ravendolls. That's exactly what I prefer to do. I'd rather, if not make clothes (let's face it, I'm talentless with a needle) then pick out ones that truly match the character that I put them on. I haven't bought Phir any clothes because I can never find the right outfit. Solace is a bit easier but there is more market for his clothing. Either way, as Ravendolls said, it is more important for me to find 'the perfect' look rather than many looks.

    17. My dolls get more clothes everyday. I make all of my clothes, so I'm always making more. The collection is really growing!
I don't change the clothes everyday, but about once a week or so.

    18. All of my dolls are very 'casual' (no fantasy-based costumes or extreme punk, lolita, or etc. styles), so it's easier to do mix and match with them. My most spoiled doll has 4 pairs of pants and about 15 shirts, with 3 more on the way. None of my dolls can share clothes other than my two minis, and even then they can't share pants.

For me I like to have a large variety of clothing for them to wear because if they stay in one outfit for a long, long time I end up getting bored with them. How often I change their outfits depends on if I've played with them recently (I'll go through stages where some dolls aren't touched for weeks), or if they're in an outfit that really, really suites them. It evens out to being about every other week.

    19. My dolls each have one outfit that is "theirs" and no one else gets to wear. This is their most common outfit.

My girls have a handful of community shirts and skirts floating around that they swap out, and the guys have a few shared suits that look remarkably alike. I have no spare shoes at all. In fact, about half my crew is barefoot at the moment. So while I do have a few extra wardrobe pieces, no one has more than 1 full outfit.

    20. One XD Then again, I only just finished saving enough to buy a body for my boy, so.. yes. However, I will say that like a lot of other people I'm pretty picky about the type of clothes that 'suit' the character. I want them to have a few outfits each (when I get more than one doll up and running) and hopefully that will be enough ^_^
