1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How much do you spend on one outfit?

Aug 14, 2011

    1. I was curious but if this thread is already been done please delete Mods. :)
I was looking on ebay and i saw this outfit I like it comes with 6 pieces but its 69.99$$$$!!:o
      Is that resonable?:?PSS:free shipping:fangirl:

    2. Firstly, it depends on the quality of the outfit and the company who made it. If the quality is good and the company generally charges more, the heck yeah that's reasonable. Even if the company charges less, with free shipping, you're still spending less if the quality is good.

Secondly, I have this thing about spending over $100 on a doll outfit - even if it's AnotherSpace or Dollheart (which I secretly love). I don't even spend that much on one of my outfits. While I love the styles and clothes, and now have a reason to buy them, I still hesitate because of the cost.

      Granted, this will probably blow over soon enough, as I used to say "Nearly $1000 for a doll? Never!" and I'm getting the second such doll that costs nearly as much. ^^;

    3. Sorry to say, but yes, that's a reasonable price. A lot of the details on those outfits have to be done by hand, you know.

I definitely flinch at some of the $75+ prices, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy them if it was exactly what I wanted. I see a lot of stuff I think is great, but pass on because it doesn't suit my characters...

    4. Yeah, unfortunately that is reasonable when it comes to the detailed company-made outfits; that's the reason why both of my dolls only have one or two really good outfits ^_^;; I got a really good bargain on each of them though, as I got them on the MP and they were still in new condition :)

The rule that I've set for myself is not to buy any outfit over $70-$80, and that's only if I realllly want that outfit for my doll, and it has to match their style XD

    5. I do flinch when outfits that are mass-produced hit the $100 mark, and I triple check to make sure I like the outfit and that it`s been made very well. Dolly outfits are much more expensive than our clothes sometimes.

For the record, my most expensive outfit for a BJD was 38000yen (494USD in today`s currency rate) for a dealer made outfit.

    6. The most I've spent on a single outfit was about $500 plus shipping (so about $550ish total). I later resold it for as much as I spent.
The most expensive outfits I currently own are in the $300-$400 dollar range (depending on currency conversion at the time I purchased them).
I'm looking at possibly commissioning an outfit in the next few months that may push towards $1000 if I get all the details I want.
Doll clothes aren't a bit cheaper than human clothes, and in many cases can be more expensive. The tiny details you find on higher priced clothing are not easy to achieve, and most companies with the higher priced clothes put out very high quality pieces. (Not all do, so check out reviews and such before purchasing if the outfit seems expensive to you).

    7. I'm typically not one to buy a full-fledged outfit. Not that I don't like the oufits I see - they're great. They're typically not my style, or I don't see pieces acting in the same way as they demonstrate on the doll (like, a dress seems too short to be a dress, and would be better used as a tunic, or long shirt...)

I usually go for separates. If those separates happen to have a few pieces that go with it, all the better. It keeps costs down to some degree.

    8. Haha, that's almost nothing compared to some prices. Certain stores have outfits that sell for over $100, while Y!Japan Auctions can see clothing sets that are $200+ (and only have a dress and a headdress, say)

$70 depends on what you find reasonable - I'd be hard pressed to spend that on a tiny, or even on an MSD if there were too few pieces or I didn't like the quality. If it was SD size, I'd say that was normal pricing for a set. And usually that's not including shipping, so $70 with free shipping sounds gooooooood :D

    9. Well....depending on what the outfit was, it may or may not be reasonable. 6 pieces though...yeah that sounds reasonable to me. ^-^;; Prices vary between companies, from $20 for things to hundreds. Prices also vary between those who make and sell clothes and do commissions. You do gotta think though about how much the materials cost, and how much labor goes into it. ^-^;

PERSONALLY though I wouldn't spend over $40/$50 on an outfit. ^-^;;; I just figure that if I want a certain thing it can be easy enough to make if I stop being lazy and work on it.

    10. Um the most I would spend would be around 300-350 about not more then that. And usually that much only for limited volks like btssb or h naoto etc. But for the most part if my doll wants the outfit and I have the cash I'll buy it.

    11. This is exactly what motivates me to create my own outfits. For a lot less money, I can have any fabric in any colors I want, as many pieces as I want, sized exactly to scale for my doll. I never spend more than a few bucks for even silks, velvet, or even satin. My last outfit was made of quilting-quality cotton in a tiny pink and white print with silk thread, and edged with real hand-made lace. The underwear I make for her are made exactly like human ones. I could never afford to buy what I can afford to make.

When I get a little more practice, I'll probably start selling some clothing. Right now, it takes me so long to get the pieces exactly the way I want that I wouldn't be able to charge enough. I can certainly see how people can charge hundreds of dollars now that I know how long it takes to do the tiny garments. A lot of it is hand work because the machine would eat some of the tiny bits.

    12. Ymcah2o, the price is probably reasonable (hard to say without seeing it of course). Like other people have said, doll clothes can go for a lot more. And when you consider the outfit in comparison to the cost of your doll it may seem less steep.

    13. It actually depends on the design of the outfit :D
Also, the quality and the quantity counts too <3
Let's say it cost over a 100 but it consists of nearly 10pieces in a set and the design is to my appeal, then of course ,I'd say it's worth.
But I think for normal outfits....$20 is already very expensive= =...
Yet the most I had spent was about 30k yen on a single set......That is the max I will move to,no way I'm paying more than that.
A thousand for an outfit? No way!I could spend the money and get so many pleasant ones with that sum!!

    14. I agree with the others. It depends on the design/complexity of the outfit, fabric and sewing quality, "brand" and if it's limited. I always told myself my limit is $50 per outfit (heck I don't even spend that much on myself) but I have already broken the record lol. But typically, my average is around $20-$50 for one outfit.

Add on shipping and your outfit costs will skyrocket if you add them together. You're lucky you got free shipping! :)

    15. I try to keep the outfits I buy $50 and under. But as the doll gets larger, the outfits get more expensive. So if I had an SD I'm sure I'd be willing to spend closer to the $100 mark. Past that, I'd probably just make it myself even if it took awhile.

    16. I don't think I've ever spent over $40 on a single outfit. If I see something I like that's more expensive than that, I'll get my sewing kit, buy some fabric, and do my best to make something similar.

    17. I dont like spending too much on doll outfits but I find myself lifting my spending limit on clothes/everything else higher and higher each time. I just recently spend over $50+ just for ONE corset and ONE pair of bloomers. They are of high quality so I dont mind paying that much for them.

Depending on how much you pay for the item, what you get will be that value[or maybe because people want to get rid of the items, so they let them go for low prices]. For example, I bought a shirt for like $5, what I got was a shirt with unfinished seams/seams unravelling. I dont complain about it because I knew the quality was going to be low based on the price I paid.

    18. I shudder at the though of spending more than $30 on a dollie clothing item... at the moment my boy's dressed in $20 jeans, $15 shirt and $5 shoes. That's what I spend on MY clothes (heck, starving student here...) and to spend that much on doll clothes seems ridiculous to me! I can't fathom to think why they cost so much, hand made details? Yeah, I understand that... but I've made a shirt by hand entirely and these companies would use a machine for the bulk - surely they can go cheaper for mass produced and majority machined goods? It goes over my head! :?

    19. I spend around $100 an outfit on average. The most expensive one I have was $150, which I think is the standard price for a Dollheart SD17 size outfit. The maximum amount I would pay is probably $300.

    20. I'll happily spend a lot of money on high-quality outfits, particularly if they come with several parts, allowing me to mix and match the way I want to. Only two outfits jumps out at me as particularly expensive, my YoSD White Fer from Dollheart and a YoSD Chibi set by Volks. I spent around £90 on each, I think they stand out the most because they're so small yet were so expensive!

I think they were worth it though. They're awesome pieces and I get some wear out of them. Mari-chan wears the white fer at Christmas and she wears the chibi set pretty much all of the time, I love the cute little boots that came with it too. Actually, that makes a difference for me too - if outfits come with shoes, I'm in heaven.

Sometimes I sew for my dolls, so I can appreciate how fiddly it is to sew for them and I don't mind the high prices because I know that reflects the high quality of the item. I also don't have any problems with complaining if the standards are low when I've paid highly for an outfit, or leaving an honest review of the workmanship.
