How often do you bring your doll outside?

Feb 6, 2013

    1. Hello, I ordered my first doll and I was not very sure about how often people in the community bring the dolls out of the house.
I mean, normally, not in doll meetups or conventions, how often do you take your doll out for fun, such as on vacation or on a cruise?

I've heard of some pretty frightening stories of dolls being stolen or broken while they are outside, even when in plain view of others. Dolls left out in the UV light also discolour over time. But, is it safe to place dolls in terrains that are different, such as the sand at a beach or in water?

So, where and how often do you take your doll out? Are you ever afraid of harming the doll? :?

    2. So far I haven't taken Celine out at all. But I've decided that when the weather is warmer that I'll take her out on dry days. Perhaps not sunny ones. She is delicate but there is much interesting photo terrain out there in the world at large. I'm always impressed when I see people taking photos of their dolls at the edges of streams and such. Scary!

    3. I bring my dolls out sometimes, for photos! I've only really been to one outdoor meet, and we stayed in the shade for most of it, but small doses of sunlight won't harm your doll noticeably. I've never had anything bad happen to my dolls while I've had them outside (knock on wood!), but I also don't generally let them out of arm's reach.

I think there's a thread for pictures of dolls in water, though, so I doubt it's too harmful--again, in small doses. It probably isn't very good for the elastic, especially salt water.

    4. i took him out while i was running an errand before a photoshoot last weekend. gonna take him out again this weekend. I kept him out of the direct sunlight most of the time if i can help it. As long as you dont leave your doll under direct sunlight for hours, it shouldnt yellow considerably.

    5. I am going on holiday soon and will be taking Clementine my first bjd doll with me but she is only tiny so easy pack her and few goodies in my handbag. If she were a larger doll I would be worried about keeping her safe.

    6. Wow, it's amazing how many of you have the courage to take our your dolls! I'm particularly afraid of misplacing the doll, it has so many small parts!:shudder

I wonder how often people bring their dolls to social events outside of this hobby~

    7. I take my dolls out all the time! You never know when you might find that perfect setting for a photoshoot. My favorites get more outside time than the rest. They've been to the beach, creek, lake, woods, shopping, work, hotels, friends' houses, park, restaurants...pretty much anywhere I've been. I don't take small parts with me. I have mostly SD, no fantasy parts (two have horns, those stay at home). I usually don't take accessories with me, so no worries about losing anything.

Loki went to a business meeting with me. :D But he stayed in a bag, so nobody ever knew he was there. It just makes me happy to have one nearby.

    8. Nearly every weekend! ^-^ It really depends on if I'm actually going anywhere on those weekends, but I'll usually have someone with me, and usually outside of the box for atleast small periods of time.

    9. Not often. Usually it's for meets. Not that I'm particularly afraid that they'd yellow or anything, but I live on the 10th floor and there is only parkings in my residence, so not really nice for photos :/

I brought some on vacation with me but it was just car drives. If I had to take the plane and wanted to bring a doll, I'd take one that can fit in a handbag so I can keep it with me all the time, for safety.

    10. Fairly often, depending on the weather! I like to take my guys out around the property for photoshoots, but I do also take them with me other places. My dolls have been on road trips, to family camp, to a bible study (lol! they stayed in the bag until afterward. I wanted to show them to my friend.), to restaurants, to anime conventions, to hotels, to a friend's beach house, to the lake house, and of course the fabric store. I even did a photoshoot alongside a campground at the Rogue river here in Oregon. It was beautiful and my boy didn't get damaged or anything. I don't fret over ten minutes of sun exposure here and there, and in some way I think the light and air outside can make them seem even more alive.

    11. i only take my dolls out when there's a convention or meet ups. im kinda afraid of the sun lol

    12. I'm still new to the hobby. No meet ups or conventions where I live. Ever.
I WISH I could go to one!!
I am still to shy/embarrassed to take my dolls out anywhere.
So they've only been outside in the back yard for a quick photo shoot and then right back inside.
I commend those people who take them out in public with them.
I am still too chicken :-(

    13. I took two dolls on my shaded deck once for under 5 minutes; other than that, they've stayed indoors. I worry too much about yellowing to really enjoy having them outside. Also, this might sound strange, but I think taking things outside makes them smell bad. For instance, I can take my dog for a walk and when we get back she smells terrible for about 30 minutes. I do envy people who have nice outdoor scenery in their photos, though. I think that if the amount of pleasure you get from taking them out is greater than your fear of damaging them, it's a good idea.

    14. Don't worry, Jelly139! One day you will muster the courage to take our your precious dolls! I'm cheering for you~ :D

Ah, photos with natural backgrounds look very lovely. Also, even concrete ones look nicer! ^^
I think I will definitely take out my doll when I have him prepared, but not for too long. The sun is their enemy!
It's wonderful how some people take their dolls everywhere, but also for the people to care for their dolls so well :)

    15. I'm thinking the same, Clementi. I don't wanna miss out in taking good photos in the outdoors but I think they're so delicate. And those stories of dolls being stolen really scares me!

    16. My dolls only travel to my backyard :(
It would be fun to bring them outside and took the picture :D

    17. I don't take my girl out often because I am SUPER anxious and nervous about bringing her around people that don't understand these types of dolls

    18. Don't think that, echo-chan. :) I know of several instances wherein people became aware and joined this hobby after seeing other people's dolls. :) Don't mind the stares. Be proud of your girl/boy. :D

    19. i bring my doll @ meets and whenever i like to take some photos of him. :)

    20. I brought my dolls out for a photo shoot a few times. But I made sure no one was around.
Their hair got so messed up it isn't my favorite thing to do, but they Love it !
