If I were a Doll Creator!

Mar 15, 2015

    1. I don't really care to become a BJD artist and create my own brand of dolls.

But many times I've been thinking about, What if I were a BJD creator, and what kinda dolls would I make?

I have to admit that the lack of bodytypes in BJDs in most companies out there are kind of annoying :sweat

You either have very muscular, muscular and slim/ non-muscular. All fit bodytypes!

My favorite companies would never cross that line. And I am starting to get tired of that fitmania!

I would have made all sorts of bodytypes, age groups and skin colors.

I would have made from chubby to chubbier. Real couch potatos with a little bit meat on the bones  Even pregnant dolls and dolls with imperfections. I would make the dolls that most of the big companies don't care to make but many would still like to buy.

I'd like to have an elder man and woman with a body and face that fits an elder character. I'd also make Anthros based on the Furry Community. I'd make some real Aliens too<3

My dolls would probably be a mix between Iplehouse and Luts.

So if you were a doll creator, what kind of BJDs would you make?

    2. What really annoys me sometimes is when I find the perfect head for a character but... the body it's paired with is taller/more built than the sculpt I've paired with a character that is supposed to be taller/more built. I know that there are ways around that e.g. finding alternate bodies that match the head/etc but it's a pain in the ass and often, the height difference is not much anyway. It's a difficult problem though, since if you actually get height/body proportions correct.. the "smaller" character might end up with a doll that's just way too small next to the "bigger" character's doll (e.g. MSD paired with SD).

My point is (haha all the rambling) that I'd make more body types available, similar to what you've said in your post.

Otherwise I'm not too adventurous.. I'd want to make my own signature style of doll.. Like how you can immediately spot a SWITCH or a MD, it would be such a delight to create a shade of beautiful that was uniquely mine? :)

    3. My aunts, my mother, and I are starting our own (porcelain) doll company. We are thinking of creating BJDs when we all get better at sculpting. Personally, I'd also like to have more body types and face types. Gaunt, beak noses, chubby bodies, anorexic bodies (not 'slim' and 'pretty', but actually anorexic looking with bones and such showing), pregnancy bodies, and probably deformed bodies and faces. I would also sell causal clothes.

    4. I wouldn't be too interested in chubby dolls, even if they turn out kind of cute, because they wouldn't fit in existing clothes too well.
But if I had a company, I'd probably make fantasy dolls, or parts to fit existing dolls, since those are generally limited.

    5. I hope to try my hand at making my own dolls within the next few years. I'm sure I'd make fantastical or just plain weird looking things. I'd love more body types, too. I'd love to see more chubby dolls and muscular ladies.

    6. Wider hips for starters.
Other than that, centaur bodies for 1/3 dolls. From there body proportions based on the characters I've drawn/written. Ultimately I'd just be making stuff that appeals to me aesthetically that I can't find normally.

    7. I am highly inclined towards creating a large adult male doll, sort of a dollmore trinity size of bjd but male. He could be her boyfriend! Also working on joint systems that seem more natural when posed, like the dollshe venitu. I'm very interested in the engineering aspect of bjds. My sculpts would probably lean towards a more realistic look, and be somewhat idealized of course, but less final fantasy inspired than a lot of the popular sculpts.

    8. So if you were a doll creator, what kind of BJDs would you make?

Big, beautiful and handsome dolls. Gals with big bums and big, more natural looking boobs. And guys with a gut and thick arms and legs. And they'd get round heads, beautiful faces and round heads that would look perfect with my plus size dolls. And I would sell TONS of clothes for them. Casualwear, costumes, business attire, formalwear! The dolls would be a special size, so I would go out of my way to offer a wide range of styles. I'd sell patterns too, so DIYs can make clothes themselves. Might that hurt the sale of clothes? Maybe. But if there was more clothes out there, more doll sales!

    9. I would make a heavier curvy SD girl. Not a really BIG girl so much as large hips/butt, large breasts and a soft looking belly curve. Still hourglass shape, just a plus size hourglass.

Also, a chubby SD adult boy. I'm currently using Volks SD13 bodies for my "chubby" male characters, but I'd make something fatter than that.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, super skinny but with human proportions. I love the collarbone and chest/rib bone of my Spiritdoll Elegance boy, but I feel his hips, arms and legs are too thick. Boney dolls!

Inbetween sizes, too. 50-55cm dolls in different lines who could be either taller relatives or partners for minis, or another line that could be short/young next to SD without being a child or out of proportion. 30-40cm kids so your SD's child doesn't have to jump from 2 years old straight to 8. XD

SD girls with both very large breasts, and nearly flat chested. It always seems like I need one or the other for characters, and end up only finding medium sized in the companies that work otherwise.

Also, large, detailed hands! Few things but me more than undersized or poorly detailed hands.

I would have a range of color options from snow white to almost black. Realistic face sculpts with a variety of unique features and structures. And of course, lots of clothing options for all the weird sizes I come up with!

    10. I really want to make dolls with retro cartoon proportions, athletic girl dolls, dolls with real character in their face :D
I feel like I could never start my own doll company because I'd be going for too many different aesthetics lol

    11. That's true of so many dolls already, though, as far as not fitting existing clothing. I'd love to see chubbier styles that are still realistic. I mostly make my own clothes for my dolls anyway.

What an awesome idea to sell clothing patterns for your own dolls! Wish companies would actually do this, even just basic ones that you can modify to create different styles of clothing.

    12. More mature minis/smaller male dolls, which I'm actually working on right now. The female dolls are nice and all, but it's been very disappointing to see so few males.

    13. I agree with this!

More resin boys in the 1/6th range that are mature looking would be my ideal. Though I am far making my own.

    14. I probably wouldn't make a whole doll or at least not right away. When I do have time to draw most of my time and detail goes into eyes, mouth, and face. My eyes are intense and very emotion filled. I'd like to create heads that pull your focus to the eyes and hold you. They almost demand that you stop, be present in that moment, and really see them.

I don't know that the bodies would be anything spectacular or at least not until I got the heads just the way I wanted. XD

I'd probably make full set dolls based on my drawings. 2 each: one for me to keep and one for others. Whimsical and ethereal, but not wispy skin-thinny or too many joints. Well...maybe if it was based on a drawing I made while taking allergy meds, oi! XD I'd cry a little inside if/when someone bought is, took the set apart, and redid everything. :sweat Yes I know that's a part of the hobby but it's how I'd feel.

    15. I would make a terrible doll creator, I'm so bad at showing diversity in faces. 99% of the characters that I like to draw always accidentally end up looking the same. But if I could, I'd probably only make girl dolls, because I'm really bad at figuring boys out and can't really bond with them. I'd want to make mature minis, for sure, with faces that look like adults, probably aged 20-30. I'm a sucker for big (but realistically proportioned) eyes and noses that are a bit bigger than the average doll's. Full, pouty lips make me swoon, so I'd like to have a few sculpts like that. I'd want to have a few different kinds of bodies to choose from, like some chubby, some muscular, some slender, and you could choose which head sculpt goes with it. Maybe some fantasy bodies, too. Mermaids and fairies, things like that. A huge range of resin tones available at all times... Basically just fulfilling my own dolly fantasies. ;)

    16. 1/6th range has become my favorite (and even smaller) to own, although it's now my biggest frustration as far as sculpting goes. xD
Don't even get me started on finding clothes that aren't too bulky or that look reasonably in scale (and I will forever loathe that Barbie is the go-to response for clothing selection until more sellers offer stuff for mature dolls). Fabrics aren't too bad to find at least, if you know where to look.

    17. I'm terrible with my hands in terms of crafting anything, so I'd like to think I'd just be a shareholder in someone's doll company suggesting things rather than making them myself :P I would love a company that only specialises in elves or some such. Like all the dolls are tied to some sort of fantasy tale, witches, wizards, elf princesses. I have a thing for supernatural, unearthly beauty.

    18. I wish I could make dolls, but I am the worst at sculpting! I would love to do fantasy type creatures! I would make so many -taurs...-taurs for every animal! Like someone mentioned, more animal like anthros, instead human like. Dragon-taurs with detailed scaling...oh the beautiful dreams...and if we're making beautiful dreams, I would definitely have to make the clothes for them, I love companies that have clothes for their dolls just because you know they'll fit. Or even anime type bodies to match anime type faces (like the original manga proportions of sailor moon...elongated arms, legs, and fingers) Though I have to admit, I'd love to make these dolls, but I prefer more regular human ones right now...odd, maybe I'm just scared that if I got one I would hurt it and would feel extra sad.

    19. Oh, this is a cool thread! I've thought about trying to make some dolls...I'd definitely like to make cute chubby dolls, sorta like Junko Mizuno style, or maybe Cherry from the Studio Killers. That sweet but sexy chubby curvy look. ^_^ I think they would make some adorable dolls.

      Also, tubby little cats. XD

    20. True 1/6 (mature tiny) centaurs! I have to find a way to make a version of Luts new Tiny Delf centaur zebra...
