impulse?

Aug 5, 2014

    1. Hi everyone, hopefully this type hasn't really been asked before and that it's the right place!

I have recently been the victim of an impulse buy. I saw it, and I had to have it. I didn't know it existed until just seeing it, but I wanted it none the less after I saw it :) Afterwards, I felt pretty badly about it, missing a chance to save up for one of my "grail" dolls.

Do you have a set specific list then see something and BAM you have to have it?

How do you stop yourself from the ever vigilant impulse demon?

Have you shifted all of your money that you were saving for the grail dolls to purchase this new doll that you just saw? I think i'm becoming a dolly addict and I need help :)

What do you all think? Do any of you do this? What are some of your impulse stories

    2. Oh perfect, thank you for those! sorry I should have dug around a little more.

    3. Do you have a set specific list then see something and BAM you have to have it?

I used to NOT have impulse buys for years... I made sure I thought about dolls carefully, did research, and never bought unless it was a doll I'd want if it was the ONLY doll I ever had.

But, after I had a number of dolls, I started looking at all the new and different dolls being released--so impulse buys started!

So, yes. I see dolls and have to have them, no matter if I have wishlist dolls.

How do you stop yourself from the ever vigilant impulse demon?

For years, I could stop with lots of rules and restrictions (and lack of money, of course--but layaways and credit cards make even that more difficult now when most companies allow this and some individual sellers). At first, I would have other dolls that would go with ones I had--so not every doll would work. I told myself, only 60cm dolls and similar styles. But then more tinies were made and I was tempted! So then it was "Only a few tinies and no other sizes."

But over the years, all the rules became broken and now I can't follow any rules at all... :(

Have you shifted all of your money that you were saving for the grail dolls to purchase this new doll that you just saw? I think i'm becoming a dolly addict and I need help :)

Yes. I'm totally a dolly addict. A very crazy dolly addict! :o

I would recommend trying to keep to your rules.
Also try not to buy on impulse, ever.
Think very hard and review plans.
But if you know you must have that doll, and can afford it... why not?

      Impulse story--
I have seen 80cm and 90cm dolls that looked amazing, but I can't understand why anyone wants a doll that big. It is hard to find clothes and items for them. They are big and heavy and expensive and you can't carrying them around anywhere because of that... They don't go with any other dolls in scale, and all seem to be males... I also had 70cm EIDs and they were BIG and HEAVY and hard to pose--beautiful hunks, but expensive to clothe and hard to find items for. So why go even bigger? Crazy, I thought.

So I saw that Crobidoll was coming out with a 78cm line of boys. I thought: Ridiculous!!! They make cute 60 and 63cm dolls, but muscle-y 78cm dolls are so far out of that range! And why???

... AND, I just got one of them home! I don't even know why!!! (But he is very cool!) :XD:

I am officially an insane doll-addict!

    4. I bought a pukifee on impulse and don't regret a thing she is lovley

    5. Now that I have learned that most dolls are only available for a short period of time before the opportunity to buy them goes away, the impulse to buy has become stronger.
The first doll I wanted was going to be hard to get from the second hand market, but it was the only sculpt out of all the dolls I'd seen that I really loved, so no worries of things getting out of control. If I ever got my grail, he'd probably be the only bjd I'd ever need or want. But that has gradually faded. While the dolls I have are ones where the sculpt spoke to me, (I have two at home with one on order) none of them are my grail. Hmm, how did that happen???

    6. I don't think there is only one answer to this question. There are times I have given in to an impulse buy and loved the doll. On other occasions I have kept to my rule of not buying on impulse and lived to watch the doll I did NOT buy grow in popularity and price until it was out of my reach altogether--and I could no longer afford it--or it has cost me much more money than if I had bought it when I first had the "impulse".

Buying dolls is a lot like falling in love. You never know if, or how long, that feeling is going to last. But, if you are really unhappy with your choice--there is always "divorce" (sell). :o)

    7. Not to brag or anything, but I'm really good with my money. Other then something really cheap like candy; I don't think I've ever impulse bought anything. So I really don't think I could buy something as expensive as a doll on impulse...That being said, maybe I just haven't found that irresistible one yet :XD:

    8. Mostly I have no money so impulse buying isn't a problem... when I have money, though... watch out :/

    9. I am super impulsive in life...so with dolls too, but so far all the dolls I've bought on impulse didn't work out and were sold. So I'm being way more careful now.

    10. I like to save up for my dolls, but I bought mine before I had saved up my goal amount haha! I might impulse more if I weren't so very picky about my dolls.

    11. Do you have a set specific list then see something and BAM you have to have it?

I have a 'list' of dolls I really like but for the most part I can't bring myself to actually purchase them. Usually they're too expensive and I wouldn't be able to justify just having them sit there when they were so expensive. I see a lot of 'OMG MUST BUY NOW' dolls around but experience taught me that I shouldn't jump to it. I force myself to wait for about a half year and if I'm still interested in them then I allow myself to look around again and purchase them.

How do you stop yourself from the ever vigilant impulse demon?

As I said I just had to discipline myself, I used to buy everything I wanted when I wanted it. After all, it's my money, right? Experience taught me that I bought many things that ended up just gathering dust and I'd have to resell them again at a much lower price. Hence I force myself now to wait for atleast half a year to see if my interest in the item remains or not. If it does then well...'impulse' buy!

Have you shifted all of your money that you were saving for the grail dolls to purchase this new doll that you just saw?

Shhh...that only happened once. And she actually turned out way better for me than the actual grail doll I had in mind. So I'm glad I was being impatient and impulsive at the time, haha~

    12. Earlier this summer I completed building my first custom (off-topic) doll that I picked all parts and materials for, including sewing all her clothing from scratch. At the end I felt she was perfect, but in the midst of building her I got to reading about bjds and saw one in particular that really threw me for a trip. Impldoll Colby looks just like a lively / doll version of my favorite childhood plush, a little green alligator. (Alligator's hips, anatomically, wouldn't make sense for the doll to have a joint there, so I hope it can get a special exception as for being close enough to the definition of on-topic. If not, I apologize. Trying!) At the time, I saw it, thought "huh, that's different!" and clicked off the page. Wasn't what I was looking for.
Then about a month later it popped back into my mind one day while making lunch and my brain said "I need this, NOW~." Thankfully, I was slowed down because I had forgotten the name and maker of the alligator doll. So for a couple days I frantically searched.
When I found it, the impulse desire had only grown. To the point where I knew it was impulse, and a bad decision at that.
So I forced myself to wait for 2 weeks before finalizing the purchase commitment. And by the 2 weeks time, I was over it at least enough to wait... In truth, I had spent my 'fun money' elsewhere and would have had to dig into savings for Colby by then. And that was the end of that.
He's still on my wishlist, but will not be an impulse by time I make it happen. That's the way I want it to be.

Sheer forgetfulness and self-awareness is the only thing that saved me. Next time, it'd be easy to not be so lucky ><

    13. I think I'm fairly practical with money and I like to think over large purchases for a long time. Because of that, any limited edition doll feels like an impulse purchase to me. After all, you usually can't see any owner's pictures of an LE doll or think it over for months on end.

That being said, two out of three of my dolls at home are limited edition dolls, so I definitely count them as impulse buys. I dearly love them, but neither were specifically what I was looking for at the time I bought them. I just had to have them!

My biggest problem with balancing my wishlist with my impulse dolls is that I over-think my wishlist so much that I practically convince myself that dolls I think I love couldn't possibly be as great in real life. I think I'm afraid to be disappointed by a grail, so it's easier to spring for the unknown fresh face sometimes.

    14. I make lists for what I really want to buy with my bjd-spendings money but I'm still scared I'll "waste" it all on some impulse buy!
I'm rather easy to impress haha... it happens a lot that I think I'm set with my plans and then I come across something new, or even something I've previously seen and put off, and I fall in love so hard that I think I need it more than anything else!
Sometimes I'd regret it and sometime I don't but it'd still mess with my plans... holding back is really not my strong point haha.
I try to at least research dolls enough that I look through all the photos/info I can find.
So yeah I do try to keep myself from doing impluse purchases (as in, see it and buy it on the same day) but other than with doll clothes, this hasn't yet happened to me in this hobby.

    15. I have fallen victim to this impulse recently. I started impulse buying when my anxiety started spiking uncontrollably and now am seriously wishing I could cancel the order for my doll and get my money back buy alas... i am thinking this lesson will stick with me as buying this doll has prevented me from buying the doll I really want. :...(

    16. Do you have a set specific list then see something and BAM you have to have it?
Yup, all the time. I'm mainly a victim of being Soomed. Because Soom's method is to release a constantly-rotating host of LE dolls, I often have to drop everything for a LE doll that's just been released.

How do you stop yourself from the ever vigilant impulse demon?
I pay a lot of attention to the difference between "I really, really have to have this!" versus "wow so cute/cool/clever, I'd love to have this!". Mostly, I spend a bit of time thinking 'how upset would I really be if this doll's ordering period closed before I ordered one?". Sometimes, like with Soom's recent scorpion tinies, the answer is "well, not much, honestly..." and so I don't buy the doll. Sometimes, like with Soom's recent mermaid mini, the answer is "it would really hurt, I'd feel pretty miserable about it" and so I do buy the doll :)

Have you shifted all of your money that you were saving for the grail dolls to purchase this new doll that you just saw?
I don't really have 'grail dolls' that I save up for. I save up a general dolly fund, and I 'impulse buy' as I find things I know I'd like to own.

What do you all think? Do any of you do this? What are some of your impulse stories
Joining a split for the latest Soom mermaid mini was a perfect example of an impulse story for me. I went from opening the discussion thread to see people saying "have you seen Soom's new mermaid?!", straight to Soom's site to see the photos, straight to DoA's split forum (still only kind of toying with the idea of getting her), straight to PMing someone about their split, straight to saying "oh sure, I don't mind getting her body as well as the OE head, I don't see why not". While it's a little stressful making financial decisions so rapidly, I know from lots of experience that I love Soom's dolls and won't regret this at all :aheartbea

    17. Usually any buys within my main two hobbies (bjds and lolita fashion) are impulse. I don't save up for grails, I don't hunt for grails--I just patiently wait until something I want pops up and if I love it enough, and can get plenty of use out of it, then I buy it. My very first doll was an impulse buy :) I saw her for sale on tumblr and tried to keep scrolling past, but wound up liking her enough I knew I'd regret it if I didn't get her. I still have no regrets ^^ I also just kind of impulse bought some clothes and shoes for her here on DoA, and while I feel guilty about spending the money (I do every time I buy something) I don't think I'll regret it when I have the items in my hands. I truly think my girl could get some use out of them, and she's been needing her first pair of shoes, so fingers crossed that they fit :D (hopefully they should!)

I find the most helpful questions to ask yourself in these kinds of decisions are "Do you like it or do you LOVE it?" and "How many ways can you reuse this/how much out of your current wardrobe does it go with?" If I can answer these well, then the item is a good purchase and I won't regret it. :)

    18. My favorite doll was a complete impulse buy. I saw her right after she came out, I had the money so I went and got her. I don't regret it a second. She's been totally perfect for me. I know for me, I have a very clear idea of the types of dolls I am looking for so when one pops up, I can get it (if I have the money!!) and know I'll love it.

    19. Just like Mirrin, my favorite doll was also an impulse buy. She is a KDF Luts Lolly and I love her to pieces. I never planned on getting her but at the last minute when I was only planning on ordering a body for my other KDF head, I just added her to my card. I am SOOO glad I did. I totally love her <3

I recently made another impulse buy. It was during the Soom Post MD Event Lottery. Super Gem Quartz was available in Snow blue, and when I saw him, I just fell in love. I had never even planned on owning a Super Gem, or a fantasy doll of this size, but there he was... <3. I should be getting his shipping notice any day now!
