It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Is it considered cheap to...

May 13, 2014

    1. ...buy doll clothes designed for fashion dolls or American Girl dolls? From what I've heard, some people look down on people who do, so I want opinions

    2. American Girl doll clothes aren't cheap. *_*

More importantly, they probably won't fit your dolls very well. Fashion doll things may fit depending on your doll's proportions, but the American Girl dolls are proportional way differently from our dolls. The clothes probably won't fit at all.

    3. Dude. Who even cares what other people think?

Other than the obvious -- that most American Girl doll clothes won't fit BJDs at all -- I don't see why it should make a damn bit of difference where anyone gets clothes for their doll. So what if some people look down on doll owners who buy fashion doll clothes? That's their problem, not yours. Buy whatever you want.

    4. If your doll can wear commercial fashion doll clothes, why not? A lot of people who have BJDs small enough to fit into Mattel Kelly clothes use them. I do. Mine are small enough to have some nicer Barbie stuff along with what I've made them.

    5. It's fabric and thread and someone sewed it together - it doesn't matter. Just have fun!

    6. If you go HERE you'll see one of my BJDs in an american Girl (or generic variety) nightgown dress which fits her rather well, since the middle ribbon cinches.

    7. I've altered several garments that were made for AG dolls (mostly hand made by my aunts) down to fit both SD and MSD, I also use Kelly clothes where possible on my tinies (one of my dolls just took a spa day in an old Kelly robe and towel)

It depends upon the look YOU want and not others opinions :)
I do agree that AG clothes (from the company) are expensive, but there's a few people who make cheaper knock offs of the clothes that still look lovely. (I had a few when I was little) there's also patterns for AG sized clothes that can be altered to fit bjds. I think it's simplicity or McCall's brand. (most of these patterns are available at sewing stores or even WalMart)

    8. I would love if I could use some of my old Barbie's clothes. Someday I will find the perfect little BJD to fit in them.

    9. AG are very wide but you can cut the dress down and size it and sew it up. I have done a few dresses for my SD. The long dresses are way to short but I have resized blouses. I think you should buy, sew anything you want for your doll. I enjoy being inspired when I'm sewing for my doll. It can be a challenge to find fabrics and buttons that are the right size for your dolls so if you see an outfit that fits... I say "Go for it"

    10. AG are both too short and too wide for most BJDs, though they could possibly be altered. I haven't tried it yet, but if you want to talk about cheap, my current obcession in life is going to places like Goodwill and buying baby clothes and cutting them down for my dolls. This is fun, easy and yields adorable results. I also found some great itsy baby sized wife beater shirts at Hobby Lobby for like $3 each. You put a seam down each side and re hem them, and voila! Perfect fit!

    11. On the contrary, most people who own the mature 1/6 scale tinies (like Soom Mini Gems) quote cheap, readily available Barbie clothes as one of the BONUSES of owning them. The only way I can see people looking down on someone for using those kinds of clothes is if they are ill-fitting, like putting American Girl shirts on a Unoa or something. In the end I don't think it's the cost of the clothes that matter, but how well they fit your doll.

    12. It's not cheap at all! XD If you like what your getting and know it'll fits who gives two craps about it? My first BJD was in barbie clothes for weeks! Also some BJD's like Bobobie and RS BJD's look GREAT in Barbie stuff.

    13. I agree. If it fits and you like it who cares what someone else says. Another word for cheap is frugal. Finding more cost effective clothing for less money is a bonus. Less $ spent on clothes = more dolls to play with....or more clothes.

    14. The fit is the important thing, and how it looks. In my experience, cheap fashion doll clothes do usually look like cheap fashion doll clothes, made worse by the fact that Barbie has very different proportions than say a Soom Mini Gem even if they're more or less the same scale. I don't think I've seen any company produce a slim tiny with those same proportions.

The same goes for cheap bjd clothes from ... certain sellers (which falls apart and looks terrible after two wears). If you spent hundreds on a doll, why have the poor doll look like they dressed themselves from a rag-bag? Make sure it fits and looks nice!

Also: if you have the sewing skills to be altering these things to fit, would your time and money not be better spent sewing the outfit yourself in the first place? :daisy Drafting a pattern is an important skill. If you can do that, you can sew your doll clothes.

    15. I gotta disagree, there ARE some BJD's that actually do fit the same proportions as most barbie clothes like the new HeartStrung Ruse and I believe Limwha has BJD's as well that fit that.

It is a hit or miss on some barbie clothes, but lines like the Fashion Fever line, My Scene, they all work pretty good and look pretty decent too.

    16. The thing to watch is the fit, like others have said. I've bought a fashion doll (I don't remember which line) specifically to take the outfit for my MSD before. The top is a little short, but it makes a perfect layer under a jacket. If you like it and can make it work on your doll, go ahead and do it!

    17. I've bought AG props. Not cheap!!! I've bought Barbie clothes for my tinies. (yeah, cheap, but cheap is good! I don't want to be spending money like crazy, personally!)

Yeah--do NOT worry about what other people think. People think all kinds of really silly things that shouldn't affect you at all. Yeah, maybe some will be rude, but that can happen no matter WHAT you do! You can clothe your doll in diamonds and someone could make a snarky comment... It's a no-win trying to please everyone, so don't let it get to you!

And, yeah, AG girls are short and chubby compared to most bjds, but if you can get something to fit, more power to you! I've seen amazing outfits made from socks, scraps of fabric just pinned together, all kinds of things. Whatever you want to do is FINE. Really. I admire that kind of thing: people who do what pleases them and enjoy themselves--and not let other people's opinions affect what they like to do! :)

    18. I don't think so. If you can find fashion doll clothes that fit that is great!
for me it is all about material/ fabric used and the issue I would have with many "barbie" clothes is that many of them are too shiny for my personal taste.
But to each their own. Do what makes you happy.

    19. Funny you mention scraps of fabric. XD I made a bubble skirt dress for my tiny, Veronica today using a scrap from when I made my MSD boy pants.

    20. I wouldn't call it "cheap". Buy what you want. If it fits and looks nice it does the job!
