Is it "ok" to buy more than 1 ltd of a certain type of doll?

Dec 2, 2007

    1. I want to hear everyone's opinion on this...

I'm kind of in the middle, because I know I've really wanted to buy two of a ltd doll just because I loved them so much and wanted them to be twins... xP But I'd feel bad if I bought two of them because there were only 20 of them that were going to be released, and that would mean one less person would be able to enjoy that doll.

So, I guess my question/debate topic is, if a doll is an limited one, like, if the company is only selling 50 of them, or 10 of them, etc... is it "ok" or, fair? *place your own synonymous adjective here* for one person to buy more than one of them?

EDIT: Mods: I'm pretty sure this thread goes in this forum, if I'm wrong, please move it! And also... I didn't find another thread like this, but if there is and I missed it, please lock this and direct me to that thread. Thanks! ^_^

    2. Well, your reason for wanting to buy more than one sounds ok, so I'd say go for it.

If you were buying more than one so you could scalp them, well, that would be a different matter. ;)

    3. I think it would be ok to have 2. If I wanted a limited doll because it was pretty/rare/I wouldnt have another chance, and there was someone out there who desparately wanted twins because these were their dream dolls...I would rather give up my slot and let them have their twins.

I dont think there's anything wrong at all with having more than one unless like Moggie said you are scalping them.

    4. I totally agree with Moggie on that one. If you are buying them to keep I don't see a problem. However most often you see people with 2 of a limited and then a month later they "aren't bonding" with one and they sell it for a hefty profit. I guess if you are just make sure you think about it seriously. That way you know the second doll will be loved as much in your house as somebody else who wants it too.

    5. Personally, I think its completely ok. One has every right to own as many limiteds of the same as they want. There is no reason they shouldn't unless they're doing it for popularity [and as stated scalping] ;\ - thats different of course. Yes, maybe one less, or more will not be able to enjoy, but as long as that doll is in a loving home, than I think its acceptable. Plus, I'm sure sooner or later, that one less person will find that limited doll they wanted, since every once in a while limited dolls tend to pop up!
Its dumb [to me] when others say stop hogging, give up one, especially stupid when people pm others about : | how they have too many of the same limiteds and say "sell me yours, you have to many."
I can understand how it may seem unfair to others, but still If the person really wanted more than one of that same limited, they should have the right to do so, v_v and it be viewed as fine [to me at least :<].

    6. I have 2 of a pretty limited doll, because I wanted them as sisters. I bought them both after-market because I was not lucky enough to get them at their release, so I paid the hefty prices... for both! I love those 2 girls, and I've had moments of feeling guilty, because I know how extremely limited they are, and I nearly sold one. But, now I know I never will. :) They are sisters, and will be together. It is also my favorite sculpt, and one I've loved for YEARS! It took me time to get my 2 sisters, but well worth the wait!

There are many people out there who buy limited dolls, but possibly don't enjoy them as much as others. You may very well give the 2 limited dolls a far better home then they would have otherwise!

    7. I've seen this a lot too. People say they really want twins or triplets or some such and before you know it they've sold one, or two, or all three at a grand profit. It may be incidental but it is hard to tell the difference betweeen sales that look scalperish even when they are not and flat-out scalps disguised as misguided true love.

I've never felt the need for multiples of any sculpt no matter how much I loved it. (okay, there was a crazy moment when I thought about tracking down a second SA Bermann head - that lasted about 48 hours before I gave it up) My personal philosophy is something like: You don't have to pick every flower in the field just cause it's your favorite kind. It's nice to leave them there for others to enjoy or pick for themselves. I also love so many doll sculpts that I want as much variety as possible. My planned twins are no longer identical just so I can diversify even further.

I don't judge people for having collecting habits that are different from my own. Some people are very focused in their tastes and are only made happy by one or two sculpts. Personal aesthetics are like love, you can't force it. If somebody wants limited twins and manages to attain their goal - good for them!

    8. I have one set of twins, and triplets comprised of the same sculpt and one dreaming head. I don't see anything strange about it, and I don't sell my dolls but very rarely, and not for profit (read : not a scalper). I like the versatility of the head molds, I like seeing how different they can look.

    9. It's okay to have as many of whatever you want as long as you are being financially responsible to get them. I have 2 limited edition colored elf Pepe's, a colored elf Roko, and a couple more human skinned elves from Bambicrony. I don't feel bad about it at all. If I could I'd buy every colored elf out there!

    10. Oh... lol, my little scenario was put up as an example to try and get my point across (I'm not very good at that xP)... it's not a personal issue... :sweat sorry for any confusion.
(the one that i was talking about with wanting to buy two of was an already sold out ltd i found... xD)

But definitely, I totally see where you're coming from. Buying two or more for scalping is wrong, but if you really love the doll sculpt, it's ok.

I know someone irl who collects bjds, and they HATE it whenever someone buys more than one of a ltd doll... so i wanted to see all the opinions of people on here.

what if they bought for popularity? o.O would that still be "ok"? like, (hypothetically) if some insanely rich person decided to by 5 out of a ltd set of 10 dolls just so they can flaunt their wealth and say that they own half of all the dolls with that head sculpt/outfit/face up/etc. ?

    11. In that situation I would have very impolite names to call them. :)

    12. Lol! I totally agree with you, but just to play the devil's advocate, what if that was their sole reason for buying any bjds in the first place? I know a few people who collect bjds because to them it's a sign of "wealthiness" and makes them popular in some way or another. xP

    13. Who says it's not? I have a pair of LE twins, they don't advertize they're 2 of about 100 but when people ask it's kind of cool to be able to say that. If you want twins in your family get twins.

What's not cool is when people buy them up to price gouge on resales.

    14. If you can afford it buy it. Don't worry about what other people think. We can't always have want we want.

    15. I don't think it's a probably. As Avacado says we can't always get what we want. Sometimes it's finance.

Surprisingly i've seen quite a few of the limiteds i want in the marketplace, but in my situations i can never afford them right away. Given another week yes but sometimes i'm not willing to pay that much. Other times i am.

Being a limited shouldn't mean you can't have more than one of the same doll. If you really want 2 or more then it's your choice. Whatever what everyone else might says, they're yours to enjoy and that's what matters.

Maybe it's me, i bond with everything i own, it had taken 4 times in the last 3 months for me to sell my nanuri07. He's limited, but i still dont want to keep him. In a way i feel happier knowing that in about 2 weeks, just before christmas he would be in a new home (we're waiting for a cheque to go through or else he would be in his new home in about 4 days!) and loved. But if some people say buy 2 limiteds intending to use the other for profit... well i'm more skeptical. It would have been nicer to buy one and let someone else who really want the doll buy it first go rather than go through everything.

      Each in their own.

    16. I find no reason you can't buy as many of a limited doll as you can afford. All of these dolls are offered first come and if you got there first it's up to you how many you get if they are available. If you have the finances to buy multiples and decide to resell I really don't have a problem with that either.

I used to collect convention fashion dolls. I always, except for 3 events I attended, paid scalpers' prices and was happy to do it as the person had to pay to attend the convention. I also sold my duplicates from two of the events and made a profit.

These dolls, especially from a Dolpa, would be no different to me. An online website purchase maybe slightly different in the reason for scalping but let's face it. Doll collecting is not cheap and if that's how that person can afford to get another doll they want I'm not sure I would begrudge their charging extra for the doll. Now gouging people for too much is really up to the Buyer of the doll and how they feel about paying that much.

I an selling on Ebay to thin my fashion doll collection. I'd love to recoup what I paid but that doesn't happen much. The only BJD item I ever sold was a Reminisce head. Mostly I lose $$ but I can't fault those who make a profit.

    17. It depends entirely on the reason for it for me.

In our house, we have a plan for Lu-Wen twins. Now this isn't because they are limited, or for popularity. The open eyed mold is just so lovely that we (Sleep_pattern and I ) fell in love with it.

I'll be quite frank, I know it's not a perfect world, and not everyone will conform to what I may think is the "correct" way to conduct themselves, but when I see someone, on one hand, collecting upwards to seven of a very sought after, limited mold, and directly on the other hand bragging about how costly they are on the second-hand market, I find it sad and a little frustrating. It's hard to beleive that someone who can only talk about how much their doll cost can really truly love the MOLD, as opposed to the status it may bring them to have multiples.

Alternately, I DO know people who have four+ of a coveted doll, and all they can talk about is how much they love it. I see them playing with them all the time, and I can tell from their manner and the way they hold them that they love them, not for status, but becuase they just do. I find this sweet, and wish everyone could treat their dolls in this manner.

But then again, I am just a little squishy wibblebeast in the end. :D

    18. yep. Own as many limited as you want. If you can afford them.

    19. I agree.

The BJD community has a strong sense of privileged about it. You hear a lot about how you should only buy one limited, and if you're buying more than one you should only be doing it for the most honorable reasons (and truly, who is to judge?).

It is a crying shame that in most other hobbies scalpers and buying at their prices has become expected and accepted. That is simply how things tend to work out in collectible communities.

We could go on all day about the moral reasons why you should not get more than one of a certain limited, but in the end it is your choice if you can afford to do it.

There are heaps of limited I want and can't afford and I would never think to say anything nasty to a person who owns more than one, or who is selling off their extra for the going market price. That is most unbecoming.

    20. Well, I don't "like" it, but what in the world are you going to do? Find out where they live, camp out in their front yard, and beg them to sell one to you?
