Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

    1. If this thread is already in existence just point me in the right direction. I ran a search but found nothing.

As the topic states is it okay to mod a rare doll? And I don't mean a limited doll that has say 100 brethren. I mean a doll that is discontinued, older, and there are only say 3 others in known existence.

Lets say you obtain one of these rare dolls and you love it! Its almost perfect but say the eyes are a little to large or the nose is the wrong shape. Is it okay to make those slight changes?

What if you want to do a major overhaul? Like adding sunken in scars on the head or some sort of irremovable very permanent very noticeable mod?

What if you obtained the only known doll of it's type? It is your doll, but if you mod it the original doll will be lost.

    2. I don't think you should. I know some people who really really have the strong will to do it though and I know I can't stop them. The only thing I guess I am REALLY reallly strongly against is people using rare heads to PRACTICE their modding.
      THAT MAKES ME SO MAD.

I've seen people mod rare dolls though and they've been good, but I just think it's rare and special as is, so they should'nt be changed....

    3. I think a lot of it has to do with the type of mod. If they are changing the head completely or extensively than they should have just used a different head. However, if they are making one ore two small changes then I think its completely fine.

Of course ultimately its up to the person that spent money on the head and no matter how much other people will complain, the head belongs to that person and it is up to them what they want to do with it.

    4. @muzikluvr

I don't have a doll such as this. But I often do see rarities in the market of Gallery and think to myself if only it's eyes were a little smaller or if its chin was sanded a bit...

Personally I would not have the guts to mod a rare doll :sweat

    5. Yeah I wouldn't have the guts either XD I know what you mean though, and if that happens I just lose interest in the doll then :P haha and there are ways to use painting as an optical illusion to make things look like they are different I know :P

    6. Yep. It's fine. Once you've bought it, it's your property. Unlike listed buildings, dolls aren't protected by bylaws. Though I could almost imagine someone wanting to make a central rare-doll-regulatory-body...

    7. It's not wrong.
I'd have no guts for this. I'd rather ask for a face-up make-up that could pop out the good points of the sculpt or make the bad ones less noticeable. If I had a rare doll like this I'd always think about her market condition and never "overdo" it with a personal character's strong physical characteristics such as scars and this kind of stuff . And I do think that modding a rare sculpt requires great skills. However, it's your money and your doll... People might facepalm you forever (and I'd be one of those people) but it's still yours, not theirs. :P

    8. If you've bought the doll, you can do with it what you want. But, because this is a rare head we're talking about, I think it's a shame if someone modded the doll who had not enough experience to give the mod quality.

    9. Who is going to stop you if you try? If you do and it doesn't turn out good, who will punish you? No one. There are no modification police. It's your doll. Someone with good sense, though, will either practice on other heads until skilled enough to do a good, sound job on the head, or have someone skilled hired to do it, otherwise the result might be disappointing to the owner.

    10. Well I fell head over heels with my first doll a Modded Volks Misia F-12, the first time I saw her, I didn't know she was modded, but then I found the "where Angels Lie" database and found the difference. I love my Rune the way she is, I'm her third or fourth owner, and the first owner opened her eyes even larger so now she takes a 22mm or 26 (she's only had the eyes in her head ever so I have no real idea, just thats there huge) I really do think it depends on the person, I mean it is their doll. But I think i'd feel kind of sad if they did "...some sort of irremovable very permanent very noticeable mod." because they are so rare. But like everybody above, it's their doll, they do as they please and no one can stop them.

    11. If modding it is what you need to do (like you know it will fit your character if only the nose were flatter, or pointier) go ahead and do it. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's immune to the needs of the owners, and if you want to mod it, do it.

    12. Once you buy it, it belongs to you, you can do as you like with it. Given that, due to the rareness, you may want to think twice about changing it, but ultimately its up to you.

    13. Even though I replied to this thread I must say I agree with Cynthia.

    14. There are so many people out there who do not know or care that a doll is rare or special, that it would be almost criminal for a person who is in the know, knows that the doll is nearly a one of a kind, to do this kind of alteration. So, while it will be done, I would hope that people who are DoA members are of the ilk that would not think of doing this to a rare doll.

    15. @Cynthia in FlintHills
Your correct in saying these threads are similar I neglected to find that one. But their is a bit of a difference in the ethical reasoning as to why/why not mod the doll.

I realize it is your doll do with it as you will, but think from a community stand point. Considering that is what we are.
If a very rare doll was modded (poorly or not) is it a loss to the community? Considering it no longer contains such an original rarity. In an instance like this think about the community rather then simply yourself. As lovers of Bjd's do we not have some drive to preserve what we love? Kind of like an endangered species. This may be a bit far fetched for some, but just something to think about.

and I think Bishonen Judge makes a very good point.

    16. Except that it is in no way community property.

I don't have any say over what you do with your property -- and you have no say over what I do with mine, provided no one's breaking any real world laws in the process. I guess I just don't see what is so impossibly hard to grasp about this concept. These are modern commercial goods, no matter how lovingly crafted and no matter how rare or beautiful or emotionally charged. Likening dolls to living beings never works, and as often as I see these comparisons made, every time, the comparison falls short at best. They are not living beings that need protection from a hostile world. I wouldn't liken them to antiquities, either, even though in the case of antiquities or cultural treasures I would gladly present an argument about the preservation of cultural heritage or something similar. We are just nowhere near there yet. If someone wants to take on the mantle of grand historian and cultural preservationist for this relatively young hobby, more power to them -- I genuinely wish them the best of luck with it -- but that's on them to do, not on the whole of the community to do just in case someone like this comes along.

    17. I think it's bad but, over time my position on this has softened. At first I though that it was bad to mod any limited doll but then I realized, what the heck can you do with one of those close-eyed limited heads that come with Luts elf dolls for instance? The possibilities open up a lot when the eyes are modded to be more open. So anyway, who knows what I'll think about it in a few more years?

    18. well the way i see it is that if you want this rare doll so badly i assume it's because A. You love the way it looks and it's just perfect or B. You want it for the sake of how rare it is. With either of these modding it just doesn't make sense. I couldn't see the reasoning behind specifically getting a very expensive rare doll because there's things you want to change about it. With that being said though it's not wrong to do so. Once you buy a doll it's your personal belonging to do with what you will. If someone really wants to then they have every right to it's theirs.

    19. For real - one of these days, I'm just going to reply to one of those threads with "NO, FOR THE LAST TIME, IT'S NOT OKAY! IT IS A VIOLATION OF EVERYTHING SACRED. IF YOU DO SO, YOU WILL GO STRAIGHT TO HELL. GO DIRECTLY TO HELL, DO NOT COLLECT $200. THE COMMUNITY OWNS YOU. THE BLACK HELICOPTERS ARE ALREADY ON THEIR WAY TO COLLECT YOU AND YOUR DOLL. PLEASE STAND BY."

Oops, wait, did I say that out loud? Sorry. I really must learn some rhetorical restraint.
