1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Keeping the muse alive(saving/waiting for your first doll)

Feb 15, 2012

    1. Hello fellow BJD lovers!

I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong place, but I didn't believe this post belonged in the actual waiting rooms. Now this is a question on what you do/did waiting specifically for your first doll. I have seen other posts about waiting but none on first dolls. I hope I didn't post this when there is already one, but I looked and could not find one. So here I go!

I am a new member of this site and to the BJD world. I have a doll in mind (DollZone June) and am in the middle of saving for her. This is taking a long time as Dolls can be very expensive. As more time goes by I seem to put less effort into saving for her though. Now it is not that I don't want her, I love her, but I find it hard to think about her when I don't really know what I am working for.

I think (not form my own experience I could be wrong) that once you get your first doll it gets easier. I believe this because you already know what it is that you are getting and know that this is something you want and makes you happy. Also you already have dolls that you can hold and such when the wait is too much.

To keep my interest alive I have done a few things: Have wallpapers on my computer of the doll model I want, drawn her, made a story/character for her, thought up a list of names, I even bought a living dead doll to ease my want for a doll. I have also done a lot of research into dolls, and even watched all of the Rozen Maiden anime series.

Now I am asking you fellow BJD lovers what you have done waiting/saving up for your first doll or what you did when you were waiting for your first doll to keep your interest alive?

    2. To some extent it gets easier. My first bjd I did not have to save or wait for, not really. I bought her at a con, so the "research and save!" phase people praise so much took place in the space of about an hour. I already knew she was what I wanted, so all I had to do was a quick verification of what the booth owner told me and make sure that I had enough for the doll (with enough left over to pay for parking and food! Hungry + Con= NOT A GOOD IDEA). I also don't do the scrimping, little piece here little piece there saving for a doll. If I want to save for a doll and keep motivated to save, I order it on layaway. It's saying that I can and will have at least that minimum amount each due date, and so it keeps me on track. If putting money away in a jar or an account works for you, go for it! Think about how you are with saving for/buying other big purchases if you aren't quite sure what is best for you. What is important is to know what you can realistically do, know what works for *you,* and stick to it. :)

The first doll I actually ordered...I thought she was never going to get here!! Then, once she was here, I realized it was only a grand total of about 2 months wait and I thought I was being silly. I actively try to forget about a doll once I've paid it off. I've only gotten super crazy anxious over two others.

I didn't have to do anything to keep my interest in the dolls alive during the waiting period. I wouldn't have ordered them if that was even a possibility! XD What I try to do is forget about the doll as much as possible. The two that I got crazy anxious over were the two that I drew clothing/style pics for, ordered accessories for, and did a lot of super prep for. All the pieces came in before the dolls and it drove me bonkers! I'd watch everyone else getting their ship notices in the waiting room and I could feel my face going :( and felt like a total brat for it. XD

    3. I understand how you feel, since I'm saving up for my first doll too. And it's not going very well, but that's just because I don't have a job or steady income yet.:sweat

Keeping a picture of her around is definitely a good idea, and I also draw my doll quite often and am always working on developing her character. It also helps to think about all the fun things you can do with your doll when you finally get her. All the photo stories, the customizing, actually playing with them ... It certainly keeps me excited about my first doll.:D

    4. silverholly- Thank you for your answer. I think a Layaway would be best too, I just currently don't have a steady enough income to so. I wouldn't so much praise this phase haha I think seeing the doll you want and being able to get said doll would be most ideal. I'm glad you were able to get your doll in a way that worked for you :) I would probably feel less worried, but I haven't even had a chance to hold a doll or even get an up close look. I hope I can be as sure of the dolly hobby as you when the time comes. Thank you for your interesting story, and comment!

Reine-de-scorpion- We seem to be in a very similar predicament. I too am jobless (but hopeful and searching ^^') with no real steady income. I hope the best for you and saving for your first dolly!

    5. Hmmm..I searched a lot of informations of BJDs, cause I was afraid that I can't having my dolls for a vert long time just because I don't know them..and I was also looking some stuffs for my doll.

    6. I actually just ordered my first doll yesterday!

As soon as I made up my mind, I went on a tiny shopping spree and I've bought her two pairs of eyes and an outfit already, and I'm talking to the very talented kscness of Harajuku Dolls about commissioning some more.

I go to college and have a job, and they keep me occupied a lot. I also spend a lot of time with friends. Two months is going to be a very long wait. But I know it's worth it. Plus, I still have to fine-tune her character and decide on her name (I'm just a little behind in the process).

    7. I've been saving up for my doll for over a year now. Quite a few things set me back: hospital trip, car repair, trashing of said car and purchasing a new one. One of the things that keeps my interest going is my friend, whom I happen to work with. She has four dollies, and we chat about all of the neat things she does with them...a new faceup, making new clothes, a photo shoot, etc. She helps me keep up my enthusiasm. I also am on this site everyday, looking at the different mods and clothing that people make for their dolls. I know which doll I'm getting, but I'm still figuring out her character and style. Everyday I get a new idea, and it's exciting for me to narrow it all down. :)

I am saving money a little at a time, but that also helps keep my interest up. Since graduating college this fall, I've been selling/getting rid of art supplies and crafts that I don't want, or will never use again. It's an incentive to gain money for my future doll, and I love having the extra space at my desk.

Two of my coworkers are also pregnant, and I'm crocheting tons of baby clothes and blankets for them as future gifts. This helps me keep my mind off dollies...for a little while! So, I suppose I really haven't lost any interest in saving up for my first doll, but I can understand that the enthusiasm for one can be deterred. Maybe there is a dollie convention or meetup that you can attend in the near future? Seeing other people with their dolls is always fun, and could help your energy level. :)

    8. Yan2ak,
It's always good to learn more information about dolls. I hope you can have your dolls for as long as you like, and find what your looking for, for your doll.

      PuffsxPluss,

Congratulations! It's good to keep yourself occupied, it makes time just fly! Don;t worry about choosing your dolls character right away some people like to wait until the doll arrives to start.

      seraphglow,
The saving process can sure be long! I've pretty much just started, it's only been about 2 months for me. I still have a long road ahead of me. I'm sorry for all the set backs, some things you just can't avoid I guess.

It's good to have friends in the hobby. I have a friend who is also interested in the hobby, but she is also saving for her first doll. Also thanks for the advice about finding a meet-up. I actually found one near by I just need to find a way to get there. It's good to see that you are so excited!

    9. I have just delved into the hobby as well, so this thread is quite welcome. My problem is that I have the money saved up for the doll I am wanting, a Soom Idealian 72 to be more precise, but I am having some complications. Problem Number One; Soom has not released a new model yet. Problem Number Two; a hole is being burnt into my pockets, as money tends to spontaneously combust when left sitting too long. Problem Number Three; I am being tempted left and right by other companies and their wonderful dolls. Any advise on how to stay on track and not be swayed by impatience and other devilish, shiny new dolls would be greatly appreciated!

    10. Good luck to you as well! It would probably be easier for me to get a job if they weren't so insistent on hiring someone with experience(how are you supposed to get experience if no one will hire you?).:sweat

    11. Hypnopompicz,
That does sound hard. It seems everyone has one problem or another. It must be really hard to wait when you don't have an idea when you can even get your doll. I don't want to push you in one direction, after all I am also new to this. However I think that if you wait too long for this one doll in particular you may end up leaving the hobby for good.

Now it's always good to be patient and wait for what you really want, and I am not telling you to give up by any means. Although, perhaps you could try setting a date (could even be a year from now you don't have to give up trying!) , or when you have saved enough money for a doll to stop waiting and get your first doll from another company(that you also love).

After all from what I can tell most people want more than one doll correct? If you are someone who plans on having more than one doll in the future who says you can't get that Soom Idealian 72 as your second or third doll?

Now if that advise isn't what you want you can always do some of the things I posted at the start. Keep pictures of them around (perhaps as your desktop wallpaper), make stories and names for your doll, Try and be active on DoA and keep the love for BJD's around you. Also you can seraphglow's and see if there are any Doll Meets in your area. I'm sure more people will post what they like to do to keep interested in this hobby so just check back every now and then.

Which ever advice you take (or both) I wish you good luck in your search, and remember that you can learn so much just from DoA and other dedicated BJD sites. I hope you can find the answer you are looking for, and I am sorry if my advice came out the wrong way. If you need me to try and explain myself again just ask. (I know I can be hard to understand sometimes)

      Reine-de-scorpion,
Thank you! I know right? It is a terrible circle and one that I am finding hard to break :sweat Even the little experience in waitressing I have is now null and void because now you need a certificate to be one! At least all the places in this town, and I don't have enough money for the course. Talk about a catch 22!:doh Good luck with your job-hunt!

    12. I remember when I was getting my first doll, it was a layaway, I spent the time making up a welcome home box. I'd pick up a tiny toy, as it was a pukipuki I was getting, or a cute hat, make clothes, crochet scarf and hat and put it all in the welcome box. So by the time the doll actually arrived I had a little box filled with toys, hats, clothes, wigs and other gifts ready for it.
I still do it while waiting on dolls. A pair of eyes here, a pair of socks there, a little knitting, a little crochet, an inexpensive wig or two. It keeps me focused on the prize at the end of the wait and makes the wait easier.

    13. That's a great idea! I think a little welcome home box is a cute idea. It would be a lot easier to obtain than a doll, and you would still feel a little bit closer to your goal. I've actually just taken up crochet myself, that would be a good way to learn how to make a lot of things fast rather than making them all full human sized. Thanks for the idea Kelli :)

    14. MissLace,
Thanks for the reply! No worries about the gramar; your points came across clearly. While other dolls have piqued my interest, Soom's Idealian 72 is beyond fascinating to me. The knee joints, the elbow joints, the abdominals...they're just..just...near perfection! Although, when Immortality of Soul releases their new 80 cm body, I may just lose my precious savings. I've always wanted one of their sculpts, especially Jaguar although he's discontinued. As far Doll Meets go, I am pretty S.O.L. where I reside unless I wish to travel a ways away, but I liked some of the other ideas you mentioned. I wish I was more of a crafter and seamster so I could make my own clothes as others do to pass the time.

    15. I'm a writer, and my dolls are all based on characters that I write about. So to mentally prepare myself to hold the resin incarnation of their characters, I write as much as I can. I write profiles of their characters traits and appearance, I write vignettes of them interacting with my other dolls, I write short stories developing their characters.
I also draw them a lot. I look online for a picture of the blank face, then draw it with my own faceup, hair, eyes etc. This helps me to imagine the character more deeply and also helps when it comes to actually painting the faceup and finding the right wigs and eyes.
I also listen to music or read books I associate with that character. For example, if your character comes from a post-apocalyptic setting, you could watch movies in that genre. As most of my characters are from Gothic fiction I read a lot of that, to become inspired with ideas and moods.

    16. Hypnopompicz,
You're welcome; I hope that my advice was useful. If you really do want that doll for your first or are scared about losing your savings to another doll just remember to check here once in a while for new ideas. Perhaps you can try taking up crochet or some other craft. i just started and there are patterns you can find here on DoA. Anyway I wish the best for you and your first doll.

      Harlequin-Elle,
That is good advice. I am not that great at writing really, but I also like to draw my future doll in new outfits and face-ups. Writing is always something fun to try though even if the end result isn't how you planned. It can be very fun and a good way to learn about your doll before they even arrive! Thanks for adding to the conversation.

    17. Good luck with yours as well. :) maybe if I'm lucky I'll be able to earn some money this summer. My parents work in property management and I can probably help clean out a house or something ...

    18. For the first BJD that ever arrived at my home, I knew I would love her and had no doubt in my mind. She met all of my expectations, and I had no regrets. There were a couple of dolls that, even though I liked them, I didn't have that same feeling of excitement. It's hard to explain, but something was missing. As of now, both of those dolls are up for sale. Sometimes it's hard to come to terms with making a mistake about a doll, but it happens to just about everyone. If you end up not liking her after you buy her, don't be afraid to sell. Use that money to try again. But with all of my dolls, I had a gut feeling about them. Sometimes I wanted to like a doll more than I actually did, and I needed to realize that. Do lots of research about BJDs so you know how to care for her, restring her, paint her if you want, there are photography tutorials, etc. Know that you might not always be 100% interested in BJDs 100% of the time, and that's okay! My interests fluctuate, I'll be BJD-obsessed for a couple months, then focus on other things for awhile.

Good luck, you'll know if you have the right doll. If, after months and months you are still in love with her as much as the first day you laid eyes on her picture, then it's right :)

    19. Reine-de-scorpion,
Thanks! :) The summer job sounds like a good way to make some money, help your family, and gain a little experience. I hope that it works out for you.

      AmberLeigh,

Thanks for the advice. It makes sense that one can't always be interested in just one thing. Perhaps losing a little interest every now and then can be a good thing. That way when I pick it up again it may seem just as fresh and new.

I think I understand what you mean about expectations. The doll that I had first chosen was not the one that I am saving for now. I had a hard time deciding that she wasn't the doll for me. Again, thanks for your advice.

    20. Considering I don't have any dolls yet, this thread has helped me a lot <3

It's hard for me to stay focused, especially with the daunting amount of money I need to raise by getting a job x.x
