Leaving your dolls in the box over a period of time

Oct 1, 2009

    1. This is something I'm kind of iffy about. We're moving soon so my boys stay in their box most of the time, wigless and naked. I kind of feel bad about it because lately I hardly ever take them out. How do you feel about leaving your dolls in the box for a certain period of time?

    2. My personal feeling is that they are dolls. That's it, in the end. Yes they're fun to make characters for and to photograph and all that, but they're. Just. Dolls. I know that if I'm moving or otherwise busy and they have to stay put up, then they have to stay put up. No reason to feel bad about it, other than if you have a box that's colored on the inside and worrying about it somehow rubbing off on your doll.

    3. Not a problem as they should be safe inside it. Elfdoll has wonderful foam cut outs to suit each doll and I wished more companies had such fantastic packaging. This way you are ready to move without worrying about damage to the dolls.

    4. They're fine in their boxes. And don't feel guilty. The nice thing about dolls is that you CAN leave them be when you can't play often. They won't wilt like plants, or need litterbox changes, they'll just be nice and comfy in there. And a bonus to leaving them in boxes is that they're out of the reach of dust and any other airborn particles you'll be kicking up in the move. Better they rest than need constant dusting!

    5. And don't forget that they're out of the sunlight, too! Really, their boxes are the safest spots for them, as a general rule.

    6. If I feel guilty about it, it will be because I don't feel like I'm using my investment to best advantage, sort of like how I feel guilty buying an expensive pair of running shoes if I don't go running a few times a week. Whether or not I would play with her enough to make it worth the expense was my major hang-up before I ordered Miriam, so I will probably continue to worry about that for at least a little while.

    7. I do feel guilty about it. My doll hasn't been out of her box in a month or two. I've been so busy, and I know that she's safe in the box. If I don't have time to do anything with my doll, I don't want to leave her out where some kind of damage could happen and perhaps I wouldn't notice immediately. Also, she's a doll, so I don't feel negligent or as if I've offended/wronged her by keeping her safely in storage.

However, I feel guilty when my doll is stored in her box for any extended period of time because I feel like I'm not appreciating my possessions enough--somewhat like what Juice said. I'm not getting enough out of my investment when my doll is packed away. It makes me worry that I've spent my money in less than advantageous manner; I feel better about owning things, especially expensive things, if I get consistent use out of them.

    8. I don't have my dollie's box anymore, due to the way he arrived and the weird packaging of DOD at the time. But I do often leave him at home when I go away. But I think if I had more I'd be more likely to store them somewhere, especially because of the ridiculous amount of moving I do.

    9. I don't think you should feel guilty leaving your dolls in their boxes, especially considering your situation. My BJDs will stay in their box most of the time for their own safety and care as well as practical storage. Personally, I only get concerned if my situation has been perfect for taking my dolls out and redressing and photographing etc but I haven't had an interest in it. If it goes on long enough I take that as a sign that it's probably time to be selling them off.

    10. Nope. I don't feel guilty when my dolls are left in their boxes for a certain period of time. To me, it makes sense to store them when I'm too busy or just don't want dust to settle on them. That way, they stay clean and safe.

I'd rather have them take a break and be safely inside their boxes with their cushions. :kitty1

    11. I don't have the nicest box for my girl so she will sit in with a blanket over the box while I'm off at school~ but I do feel kinda bad when I don't mess with her for over a day, I at least have to take her out and watch tv with her or something lol XD

    12. If you're feeling guilty about them staying in their boxes, you should watch Rozen Maiden sometime. :) On Rozen Maiden they say in their boxes is the only place they can dream as they sleep and that it's the happiest place for them. That's one way not to feel guilty about it. ;) Although really, there is absolutely nothing to feel guilty about, it's the best thing for them right now.

    13. Box is the safest place for my doll, so no I don't feel guilty. But I also have it set up so that the box looks likes a little bed and it looks like my doll is "sleeping".

    14. This.
And I wouldn't feel bad if I were you because you are just keeping them safe from yellowing and other things that can harm them. No need to feel bad for making sure your lovelies are well looked after

    15. Their boxes are the safest places for them. Outside, they could tumble, they could end up in the sun, they could get savaged by cats, they could get savaged by children, they could end up getting stained on things like nail polish... Haaa, boxes are nice places for dolls when you're not doing anything with them.

    16. My two SDs are in their boxes right now because I'm making clothes for the MSD crew and they'll just be in the way. They have fist hands and unpainted heads I put on them when I do clothes for them anyway. It's only around meet-up time that they actually come out to play with their face-uped heads and regular hands. They're safer where they at present. Their turn will come to be sewn for and they'll be out for a little while after the meet-up-I tend to leave them out for about a week before it's back to the box.

If I were doing photostories, I'd probably have them out more. The MSDs tend to stay out all the time-only Fauna actually has a box of her own and she won't let me put her up!:| My hope is that when we get done painting and fixing up the inside of the house, I'll have some room to set up a proper bookcase or dedicated area for them so that the big ones can stay out as well. But I don't get upset about putting them away.

    17. My dolls stay in their boxes to protect them from the sun when I'm not photographing them or messing around with them. It's nothing to feel bad about, since they're safe (which is the main thing) and I always know where they are... and it just makes it even nicer to get them out of their boxes and see them again, really: almost a 'so there you are - I missed you!' feeling :)

    18. Ah I completely agree with you! I'm exactly the same way with my dolls. :]

    19. Since you're moving leaving them in their boxes is probably the safest way to go. But other than a situation like that, I display all my dolls. I figure if I can't see & enjoy them on a daily basis then what's the point in having them?

    20. I think that box is a proper house for a doll. Safely, comfortably :) I make doll's bed (mattress, pillow, quilt) in box and store doll there. I keep them with eyes, wig and night suit as a rule. Especially if I must leave them for a long time.
