Limhwa quality - resin lumps, yellowing, and posing?

May 11, 2015

    1. Hi, I've been in love with Limhwa girls for a few years but haven't considered buying one till recently.
Can anyone share their thoughts on the quality of their limhwa princesses?
Some rumors are that their resin is lumpy and that the seams are unsandable. They're french resin so they yellow, but do they yellow or turn green and if so, are they still normalish or are they more fantastical?
      How is their posing?

    2. I have had my girl Aya since November- she is incredible (there is a pic on my profile)! She is an MSD Lily sculpt- she is just beyond beautiful. They are not french resin, however- I think older models were, but they have definitely changed to opaque resin. Thank your lucky stars, too, because french resin isn't a "maybe it'll yellow" deal- it WILL yellow, and FAST, which is why a lot of companies don't do french resin anymore. My girl is white resin, and I think she has yellowed (I just have this feeling, but it could be my yellow room light because she's still hella white in photos), but hardly even a shade. Like, really, you can't notice it- and that's even with me being an idiot and leaving her in the sun for the first month of ownership! She now sits in a dark corner of my room and I get to admire he everyday.

Personally, I think these dolls are great for getting into the hobby. They are beautiful, and everybody envies them (doll owners and non bjd hobbyists alike!), and the sculpting is just fantastic. The face plate system is amazing, their features are sensuous, I love love looove the hands and feet and body sculpting- so beautiful! (Thinking about going and hugging Aya after this <3). The resin does have a tooth to it- maybe better described as a grain, but I think it adds a lot to their charm. She just feels nice, ya' know? :P I wouldn't recommend sanding seams on any doll- 1), I don't care about seams- honestly, I think they are a tribute to the craftsmanship and think they're kinda nice, and 2), I am a huge baby and would never mod a doll that I spent upwards of $500 on- not yet at least ;P So really, I wouldn't recommend it. All dolls will have seams, and I think sanding them can make a doll more unattractive.

I can't say I love her posing though. I really hate the way she sits- Ohmigod I hate it so much. I don't blame her, but damn- the posing as far as sitting down goes sucks. She does have a nice notching system in her back to help her slouch for sitting, but I hate the fact she has to slouch even. All of Limhwa dolls have very arched backs, though, so its necessary to even get her to resemble a seated position. Otherwise she can't even make a 90o angle between the hips and thighs and hold it.

Everything else is great, though, and even though I complain about the posing, she really is a gorgeous angel- and its funny to say, but her flaws make me love her. I just feel crazy bonded to this girl, even though her character isn't really shelled out well, I really fell hard for her and this hobby the first time I saw a pic online. She is double jointed, which makes up for my angst over her sitting- I was messing around with her last month, softly complaining about her single jointed-ness (I thought at the time), and all of a sudden, I popped out her knees and saw that she had a bean in her knee joint not connected to her leg! And the same thing in her arm! I felt so stupid for a long time after that :'P

If you decide to get one from the Junkyspot (where I got mine, and there is a restock on all models! woopwoop!), she'll be here in less than a week. I'm in Oregon and I got Aya in four days! If you decide to get one, let me know, I'd love to see who you decided on!

    3. I bought a limhwa yosd second hand and I love her. She needs new strings but when I got her I could get her to stand on one foot with no problems. It was great. If there is yellowing (I'm sure there is because she is a couple years old) It is nice and even and still looks like a normal skin tone. It's not "yellow" or "green". They are very detailed and the resin just feels nice. I always thought I would hate seeing the seams on a doll, but once I got her, I never really noticed them anyways. Actually after getting her I don't want any of my dolls to be sanded again because I like the "tooth" feel of it and it doesn't have that shine that makes them look/feel like plastic.

    4. Hi! I have a lot of the Limhwa dolls and a very strong opinion of them. I absolutely love Limhwa's style.

The resin is not lumpy. It does have texture, almost like skin. It does not look action figure or lego smooth, like FairyLand. It looks organic, and soft.

The seams are absolutely sandable. I've sanded several dolls myself. Here’s an example of a repair I did to a secondhand Limhwa Mano:

For ANY brand of doll, including Limhwa, my best advice is to sand them when they're brand new. Sanding older resin can cause the newer resin underneath to appear a different color until it ages a bit. I also don’t recommend sanding tan, ever, unless you’re willing to airbrush and work with that forever.

The original dolls from 2008 or so are French resin, which definitely yellows, not greens. It yellows like a stick of butter left on a table.

Here’s a beautiful example of old French resin from user Poptart. I believe all 3 of these dolls are French resin in various ages / yellowing states:

They do NOT do French resin any more, it’s all a beautiful porcelain-looking solid color urethane now. Any doll you order new or through JunkySpot will NOT be French resin. Normal resin will change slightly over time, but oddly I have not noticed this in my Limwha dolls that I bought new. My Dollshe and Doll Chateau dolls have obviously changed over two years, but my Limhwa parts aren’t noticeable yet. I do have a very old white body I bought secondhand that came mellowed, and it matches brand new Lilycat ns.

The 57cm girl posing is a little stilted compared to, say, a Twigling body, but easy compared to Doll Chateau large dolls with extra joints (they never stay ARGH). I suede mine most importantly in the torso and wrists. sejadzak nailed it, they have a sway back. Sueding the torso immediately allows you to control the degree of sway, and they have a beautiful range of torso poses that all look natural. My main fascination with Limhwa is the beauty of the sculpting. These dolls look gorgeous in any pose you can wrangle them into (and you can do quite a lot of magic with the single jointed large dolls - search through Poptart's thread history).

The mid size dolls are double jointed, but the 57cm large dolls are not. I haven’t had the chance to work with the larger EOS 60cm girls, but they are double jointed like the mid size dolls. Lots of good posing examples on Flickr if you search EOSDoll.

I am obviously biased, but I think Limhwa makes the most beautiful dolls out there. I highly recommend getting at least one. The face and hand sculpts are beyond compare.

    5. Yes, I love my Limhwa Lily and I have her in tan (and like most tan, not sandable!). I also have a Mono. They aren't the most inventive posers, but they have a personality all their own. Also, Limhwa is a single person shop! The lovely woman who sculpts them was a student of Bimong who creates Narae/Narin (Supia has another student of his, and their dolls are on my wishlist), so you are truly supporting a single artist who simply loves the work (not that doll companies are really big in this hobby). There are some inconsistencies in resin, but I am with others--it adds naturalness. The roughest patches are honest, at worst, on headcaps, which are covered by wigs. I also love the faceplate system (ooh, if she would release other faceplates!!). The heeled feet on the girls are STUNNING. Honestly, I think I play with my Limhwas more than my other dolls (don't tell poor Gavin, my Iplehouse boy). The simple jointing makes it more approachable for me for now.

    6. i love my limhwa girl and i will always recommend a limhwa... however i don't recommend a french resin... i haven't had any problems with my girl
