Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Modification you're too scared to do?

Dec 22, 2014

    1. Is there any kind of mod you don't think you could ever do to your doll? Even basic things such as restringing and sueding count.

For example I am waaaay too scared to ever do my dolls face up. I keep thinking that I will use the wrong kind of tools or seal it improperly.

    2. Even though Im quite new to the hobby and dont have my first doll yet, im not too scared to try out different modding techniques since I do a lot of art stuff and modify other non-doll items. Though I dont think I could ever do any drastic mods to my first doll like using epoxy or carving (since It wasn't fully paid by me, more like a gift).:XD:And I guess only if thats what the character required and I knew just what I was going to actually do (I like to plan a lot). I might also feel safer if it was a second hand doll i guess until I gain some real doll modding skills to become fully confident. But I would like to defiantly give face-ups a go!

    3. I was scared thinking about doing piercings for a doll or two, but now that I've seen enough videos I feel pretty confident it'll be super easy. At some point though I want to make a really creepy version of the Crooked Man character. Considering using a DC doll since the bodies would be perfect, but I want a crooked nose and not sure how to go about that. So that'll probably be one of those things I'll be scared of doing for ages. XD

    4. Well, I try almost anything with Apoxie. I am not afraid of adding joints. What still scares me though are face-ups (though I have done some by now), and body blushing. I really do not want my dolls to look like as something has burnt them. I have to do a female face-up soon, and I am really nervous.

    5. I have no experience with modding, but I do have experience in sculpting and I know I'm terrible with mouths (lips) so I wouldn't dare touch that area just yet. lf l mess up it'd be an ugly fix, haha.

    6. At the moment, about the only thing I'm uncomfortable doing (not "scared," as much as "I feel I'd rather leave this to someone with more experience") is mods to the face of a doll. I have no issues with modding the body, and have done some ear mods in the past as well, however, and eventually I'll likely be fine with face mods as well. (Nothing else bothers me; I've even restrung a doll in the middle of a group box opening while the other two people were dressing theirs; I blush, faceup, and suede almost every doll I have, and I don't mind any of it at all.)

    7. No, I've done just about everything, drilled, dremeled, sanded, sculpted, pierced, added apoxie and removed the same. Not afraid of anything as long as it's my doll. I don't think I would work on another person's doll.
Though I haven't actually dyed a doll I did work with one that had been dyed. (My mods are the last two dolls in my signature).

    8. I really want to learn how to do heavy scar and carving mods, but I'm super worried that a lot of the inexpensive 'practice heads' on ebay are actually recasts and I've never gone ahead and bought them as a result.

    9. There is no modification I would be scared to do. I love when the one's who are let me work on their dolls.

    10. My courage is directly related to the cost of the doll, so my goal is to one day buy a neglected secondhand doll and bring it back to life, fixing cracks with epoxy and all that. I'm definitely buying my next doll blank and doing a faceup and body blushing. Not sure I'd ever have the courage to do things like mod something completely new, like elf ears or hooves. I really respect people with the talent for that.

I also plan to suede my current doll, but it seems like enough of a hassle that I don't want to try until her current elastic is worn and needs to be replaced anyway. It's less a matter of fear and more about laziness!

    11. I think if I ever want to try my hand at some, "extreme modding" bjd addition, I would start on a practice heady and cheaper body:sweat

    12. I'm not afraid to mod and restring my dolls, as a matter of fact I'm not even afraid of dyeing them -I just need more technical know-how first-. The one thing I'm being much of a chicken to do is mod a third eye on top of my IoS Sezz's head. It's because he's both limited and discontinued I would guess... But his character is a Hakutaku and he retains his third eye even in his human form... -__-; (technically speaking he has six more on his sides too, but they are sealed shut in his human form so modding them is rather easy...)

    13. Right now, there's something which I rather desperately need to do but am too afraid to do it, and that is to mod my doll's feet smaller. Of course, I could just buy other feet, but that seems more inconvenient right now. Hahaha.

    14. I can see why people are fearful of possibly messing up their dolls but as with everything else in life, time and experience are key to building up confidence and getting in the practice to go ahead with modding. I have only done minor mods myself so far, but I do plan on getting hold of a DC Elizabeth in 2015 and maybe adding extra arms and an additional head! I'm not scared of the idea but looking forward to the challenge and the research I'll have to do to get it to work! :)

    15. Since I've modded my Volks Williams' head to give him dreaming eyes, I'm not afraid of doing any mods on my own dolls. I would however be very hesitant to work on someone else's property, even if it is just a face-up.

    16. Definitely face mods! I am very scared of once and done work. Plus, The more I get nervous, the more likely I am going to make mistakes. Otherwise I think I will be fine. The face is the most important part. I just can't allow any mistakes on it!

    17. I don't have any major mods planned but I would like to pierce a few ears. I have a couple elves that I think would look great with dangling earrings but I'm worried that their ears will break while I do it or that the holes will be crooked, or that the earrings might catch on something and break the ears that way. And what will it look like when they're not wearing earrings? Will the holes be really noticeable? That last part is what bothers me the most about going through with it.

    18. I want to make Kier's legs and hips thinner. His upper body is perfect but his lower body just feels too thick. But I'm afraid to shave him down, since that might make the resin too thin or I might mess him up. He's one of my most expensive dolls, so I'm extra scared.

    19. For me, that would be opening the mouth and integrating some teeth or fangs.

    20. I'm still a newbie, so I'm a bit scared to restring. It's not something that I have to do yet, but for some reason I think I'd do it wrong. I'm sure I will be okay when the time comes since I'll be sure to keep left and rights separated, but it's just one of those first time worries.

I don't want to get rid of my dolls factory face ups, so I know that I'd end up getting a spare head. I'm actually not too worried about face ups now, I've looked up quite a few videos and know what I need to get. I also know that the first one will probably suck, but practice makes perfect!

With other mods, I'd make sure to have spare body parts in case things go wrong. If I didn't have spares, I probably wouldn't go through with it unless I had purchased a doll specifically for modding purposes.
