Owning Various sizes of BJD's

Jan 14, 2013

    1. Hello everyone! For one, I'm sorry if there's already threads pertaining to this, I really did try to search for this question and couldn't find it.

What I'm curious about is when people own different size BJD's, like having a couple of MSD's, SD's, tinies, etc. I've been curious about owning SD's before, but I'm scared to own one because so far I only have MSD's and I don't want the SD to stand out like a sore thumb especially if that SD is part of the storyline my MSD's are in. So here's a list of questions:

      1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

I hope this is relatively clear and again, sorry if this has been answered before, but I really want to know each person's opinion on owning a variety of sizes!

      Thanks in advance!

    2. hello there! :D

      well here's what i have:

      1) variety wise, yes, because I like having different things to look at. If I had only one type of SD, I would get bored pretty quickly xD and nah, I think having different sizes are fine :x

2+3) I don't really have storylines for my dolls, maybe if personality is counted? But I do keep them together regardless of character differences :D

      4) interaction wise I would say they're more like roommates, though i would like to do a picture story of them in future :)

    3. I like having them one scale so they can be grouped together. At first I thought SDs were creepy (having a huge doll in the corner looking at you, you know) but I love the level of detail that comes with an SD and how they generally look more adult than MSDs.

    4. I just really like variety so I kind of want a bjd in every size. Plus it allows me to see which size I prefer. I initially only wanted SD's...til I got a MSD. And I used to be totally against tinys...til I got one.

I don't really have a storyline for them. My drow girl is named after a Drow in a book series and my DD is Power Girl, but that's as far as it goes. They just are. I guess you could say they intermingle. My first MSD's in her box on a shelf on top of my SD's box lol. My Drow girl is hiding in her case in the same dresser as my tiny. And My most recent MSD is hiding in her box under the bed with my DD. So technically, they do intermingle lol. I have put them together sometimes in photos. I mostly like to put my tiny with the others b/c she just begs to be held and whatnot.

    5. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

Yes, I enjoy it a lot! I have three sizes - YoSD, MSD and SD - but only two genders in SD size. I think it is nice to have all sizes, because I feel each size conveys something a little different.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

I do not have story-lines, but I do take photos of my dolls together.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I store my SDs on one shelf and then my MSD on another and my YoSDs will soon be moved to yet another, because I seem to be adding more and more dolls. As a result, I display them separately. For a long time, though, I displayed them all together.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

I photograph them together from time to time which can be challenging yet rewarding. It is fun to see them together.

    6. So far I have two SD boys with one MSD girl on the way. Eventually I'd like to have all kinds of sizes at least once, although I guess I generally prefer sizes from MSD and upwards.

I don't really mind the difference storyvise, as MSDs are smaller it's easy to see them as younger members of the group, ie teens or youths. Or children. ^^
I haven't thought about tinies yet, but I guess I'll find one or two characters that would fit a tiny and fit the group as well. :>

    7. My BJD world is SD sized, 58-70cm. They are all teens and adults. But I do have two MSD sized boys who are eight year old children in my stories. I am not a huge fan of child dolls and am not a fan of baby dolls at all, so I don't collect tinies and don't actively seek out more MSDs to add to my resin family.

I photograph everyone together. I have several different storylines that will eventually all cross over and intermingle. And everyone interacts together.

I wouldn't mind having a separate world of 30cm mature BJDs because I think they are awesome, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

    8. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Hmm variety, i own a lot of different sizes from Puki size to hound size and pretty much everything in between.
I love owning dolls of different sizes, I could not imagine only owning One size of doll.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
Most dolls in my collection have their very own storyline. there is one big story that some of them share but since that story (and all of my other once)is a fantasy story the size difference between the Tiny Fairy and the Hound sized Elf is easily explained.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They all live in the same place in my house and just sit together, I love seeing them all, the biggest and the smallest in the same place.

    9. I own 2 of each size.

I have a Resinsoul SD boy and a Magical Angel SD girl,
an Resinsoul MSD and an ( off-topic ) MSD Goodreau BJD.

Also I have a Realpuki and - on her way - a PukiPuki.

I like it when each of my dolls has a "partner" in her/his size.
And sometimes its quite cute how they interact - for example,
my Realpuki fits perfectly into one hand of my RS boy .. its just too cute :D

All in all I like the variety in sizes,
and thats part of what got me into the hobby in the first place :)

    10. I have 60-70cm dolls and had a pukipuki. None of the dolls interacted unless they were the same size. The two 60cms posed together. The 70cm posed somewhere else, a striking figure of fashion (hah). The pukipuki was always in hand or in its box so I wouldn't lose it. I enjoyed the different sizes for different reasons, but it was fun and a little disconcerting to see the different sizes next to each other.

    11. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Yes. Though they don't look good next to each other due to style differences. Everyone besides my 1/6 dolls are teenagers somehow.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They're apart. My 1/6 and 1/4 are more stylized while my 1/3s (well, one short Zaoll and two 70cm boys) are more realistic.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I store them together. All my dolls live on my desk or on the shelf next to my desk. I don't have the space and resources to give them dedicated dioramas or something.

    12. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

My first dolls (6 or more) were only SD sized, so I understand about wishing to keep dolls looking like they could be together and seem to go together. But then, after that, I felt more like exploring and seeing how different dolls would be, since I do NOT have characters and story to stick to and since I already had dolls that went together.

Even my large-sized dolls no longer go together. I am a bit sensitive to different styles and proportions, so usually my Delf elfs are a group and my Volks humans are a couple by themselves, and my iplehouse dolls are another group. So when I decided to buy some tinies, I bought them to be their own separate group!

It it fun to see how others make whole families with younger kids with their different sizes, but so far, I have not thought of doing that. I just buy dolls I like and they form their own little groups... more friends or lovers or siblings than different ages and sizes. So far, my different sizes have not crossed lines to make groups of their own! I don't know why. It may happen in the future, however! Some of my big dolls may interact with the smaller ones...?

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
So far, they are kept apart. Different characters and storylines (or no storylines!)

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Storage... they get shifted around a lot, so this doesn't matter much. But I do try to keep the different groups somewhat together.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
They don't, or don't have to, since there is no storyline.

    13. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

I started out after seeing an MSD and thinking 'Oh god, this thing is huge- How could I possibly ever have anything this big?' And deciding that MSDs was going to be my niche... Until I became far more comfortable with the idea of the larger-scale dolls and am now working towards my first 70cm. ;3 I'm also on my way to a couple adorable Zuzu's, and have an immense fondness for 'tiny' things so at this point I'd have to say that I like having the varrying sizes... It isn't weird necessarily, but it does make things a tad difficult since not everyone can swap wigs or clothing out with one another as easily as they might if I were only collecting a single size.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

Completely different storylines. The MSDs are not necessarily in the same storyline, but they aren't associated with anything for the 60+dolls either. The coming Zuzu's will also be standing on their own, as I couldn't possibly imagine them running around amongst any of the other dolls with the exception of my biggest Dearmine girl.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I do store them all together set out over the same dresser, but that's more for a current lack of space (until I can get them a nice curio cabinet or the like) than any kind of interconnection between them.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

Most of my dolls were created with a storyline in mind... Though in many circumstances it hasn't made much of a difference and I've ended up scrapping whatever the original idea actually was in the end. While 'resting' as it were, the crew is frequently posistioned together however they'll fit in their little designated space, which means over/and in whoever's lap is availible, leaning against someone else or whathaveyou. They actually seem quite cozy for folks that have no possible way of ever intermingling with one another.

    14. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Its great! My biggest is a Dollmore Lusion (80cm) and the smallest is a pukipuki(10 cm) and I have plans in the works for getting a Dream High Studio super micro (5cm) and Dollmore Trinity (105cm). The pukipuki's head is about the size of the Lusion's eye. Its nice having different sizes for different things. I do alot of sewing for my bigger dolls, and on the off chance I end up going to sleep with one the bigger ones are definitely more cuddly. The midsize ones tend to get carried around to doll meets and friend's houses. My micros are my desk buddies at work since they're small enough for people to think "oh, thats a cute thing to have on your desk" rather than "why are you bringing toys to work?"

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
I don't do much with storylines. They are all kept together on a table and it looks great since i have a range of sizes I keep them in 2 rows with the shorter ones in front.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They are stored together for the most part, although since I've gotten a few new SD size the Lusion has spent more time either sitting on my bed or in my chair since the table is getting a bit crowded. I'll have to do the same with the Trinity when I get her since there wouldn't be enough table space for her.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
Even though I don't have specific storys per say there is a level of interaction according to what fits with a specific sculpt. I have a pair of JID twins that tend to stick together and are the same size, and my micros tend to group together. It isn't always based on size though. For my yo-size dolls, one inexplicably seems to pair up with my SD size boy and the other with my Lusion as "her doll" even though that wasn't my intention when I bought either of them. Then there are one or two that don't really pair up with any of the others. It seems to work out well overall though.

    15. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?

I love owning a variety! Just one size gets boring after a while... I own everything from pukifee/lati-yellow size (16cm) all the way up to 70cm~

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

Every single one of my dolls from tiny to huge share one consistent storyline.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

      Yep~ everyone is displayed/stored together c:

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

They tend to interact even out of concept of the main storyline. For example I've found out that my SSDF Avalanche really loves hanging out with my Crobi T-line Wooyu... They're sort-of best buddies and I love posing and photographing them together. It depends on their characters and appointed ages I guess...

    16. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
at the moment I only own one but I'd love to own a variety of sizes someday, I don't think it's weird at all.
      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
my dolls don't have any "story" that they follow so if I had an MSD she wouldn't be kept apart from my SD or YoSD doll(s).
      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I don't think I'd be able to store them together (because I have to keep my doll in her box when I'm not home because of my cat) but if I had a place to safely display them then sure, I'd store all sizes together.
      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
I'm not too sure how to answer this question.
My dolls don't have a "storyline" that they follow and I don't have a second doll yet but if I did and they were different sizes they'd just interact normally.

    17. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I was like you, I wanted to have only MSDs, that was till I found an SD that I just fell in love with, I needed to have him, and now I have bought another, so I have 2 SDs and 6 MSDs combining the ones I have at home and the ones I am waiting for.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
All of my MSD are original characters from different Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying games, the excuse I gave myself for getting my first SD a 5Star Angelo, was that I could make him into Corellon, one of the official gods in the game. That has pretty much become the way I divide my dolls, MSDs are original characters played by me or my friends and the SD represent the gods created by the games publisher.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

They all sit in the same shelf, it does look a bit weird and I rarely take pictures of Corellon together with the other dolls, though there are a few tricks I have learned to make them look more similar in size.

    18. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I like having multiple sizes, but so far I don't have any really tiny dolls (16 cm, for instance) or really large dolls (over 65 cm).

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
      None of them have storylines.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
So far, I don't store them together on the same shelf of my display case. There are three shelves total, and only tinies fit on the first, MSDs fit on the second, and SDs must be stored on the bottom. I have way too many SDs for the case, so the remaining ones share a large couch. I really need more tinies, since the first shelf looks kind of sparse with only three dolls. If I had an overflow of tinies or minis, they'd probably share shelves with the larger dolls since they're too short to block the view of the larger ones - it wouldn't seem weird to me.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
I have taken photos of different sizes together for family shots or sometimes because I think a certain pair looks good together. I never pose them as if they're in a romantic relationship, though.

    19. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I have all sizes :D No Pukis yet, nor any Mecha Angels or those 90 cm dolls. I also won't get dolls in a different scale - Chicline, 52 Idealian, mature MSDs, etc (although I'm thinking to get some Soom tiny Fairies for one of my SD girls who's a doll collector LOL

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
All people from my little town - families etc. It makes me smile when people talk as if a 58/60 cm girl can't have a 70+cm BF - just go out & people watch... So yes, they ALL are in the same story arc.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

Mine sit in family groups (& couples)

    20. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

Yes! I like owning different size dolls. I don't think it's weird at all.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

They intermingle. My MSD size doll is my SD size doll's little sister, and she's overall more of a young girl character. Actually, the little girl is an Iplehouse JID, and her big sister is a Volks Dollfie Dream. I consider my larger dolls to be adults.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I keep them together. They're all in the same scale. Age doesn't matter.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

I don't always do storyline photos for my dolls, so this applies to me, too. They're still under the big sister/little sister dynamic.
