1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

photostories and smackjeeves?

May 23, 2015

    1. Recently I have been following a doll photostory that is being posted on smackjeeves. Now i never thought of that website and dolls before. It is in a comic book style and on going but does this kind of thing really fit in the smackjeeves website? What are your thoughts? Is this a good idea to reach a more diverse audience or do you think people will shy away because the media is not a drawn comics and it features bjds. Also where would you put your story? A blog, deviantart or just here on DoA.

    2. Photo comics are on the experimental side, but as long as it is a comic I think it works fine for Smackjeeves. However, that is probably a topic better suited for their forums.

More generally on the topic of photo comics featuring dolls:
I like comic style photo stories, as long as they are decently made and the author understands how to tell a story with images.
All the regular "rules" for comics applies, regardless of the medium. Show; don't tell. Make use of angles, panel shape and size to lead the eye to the right place on the page and to control pacing and so on.
I have seen photo comics that have suffered from the general feel that the author chose their medium for love of photographing their dolls rather than because of an interest in storytelling and those comics tend to have a very slow pacing.
Another common problem is the author painting him- or herself into a corner quickly, because of the limitations that the doll hobby itself sets. Dolls available limit how many characters the story can have and if there is a need for background characters or crowds even a large collection quickly becomes used and seen. Many doll owners also have a need to show and present every single doll they own and the storytelling aspect can become a victim of the character building aspect. Available backgrounds and the environment for the story to takes place in are also usually limited.

The main strength of traditional comics as a form of storytelling has always been the fact that when you draw, anything is possible. You don’t need a higher budget for a superhero on mars than you do for a high school drama. Traditionally comics tend to be heavily centered on the supernatural, superpowers, extravagant adventures and other “big” things like that.
When doing a photo comic you lose a lot of the “anything can happen”-factor. And even if you can make up for it with photo editing it will add an extra step that can force the creator to make choices based on what is possible and available, rather then what will tell the story best.

The right person can still do it well, work with what is available and make it a good photo comic.

    3. This is a well thought out response. I have read many photostories both in comic and others styles some are better then others. Supernatural stuff can still happen if you are good with photoshop, I suppose. I guess this is a new style of comic on smackjeeves and i have only seen two doll photostories and one is deffently all over the place and hard to read. The other one i am following is very well put together and seems to be thought out.
