1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Plus-size dolls?

Nov 30, 2025 at 2:23 PM

    1. I've been considering making a doll of a character who doesn't have an idealized body, and I realized that I can't think of a single plus-sized/chubby doll body that isn't the Smart Doll Pear, which is OT. Has anyone ever seen a BJD with a more, shall we say, realistic body type? :sweat Of course what I want to do is have that character as an MSD...a 1/4 scale plus-size male body may be a big ask.

If you haven't found such a body, what do you do to make your fat characters...fat? Body padding? I'd be really interested to know!

    2. Impldoll has recently put out "plump" dolls in both 1/4 and 1/3, but they are definitely not what I'd call "fat," they just have bigger hips.

    3. Goblin Tales no longer does BJDs IIRC, but the Cassie doll is a plus-size 1/4-scale doll! You might be able to find one secondhand.

Similarly, I know I've seen a plus-size 1/3 around (Magikademia if I have the name right?) and mmmiiiiigght have seen an artist doing sculpts for such a body recently, but I couldn't remember who if I'm right in the first place.

Ah, but rereading your post, plus-size male dolls specifically? I've not seen them around. I would love to see a greater range of bodies available, since for the guys, it's so hard to find anything beyond various forms of muscle dude from what I see. Maybe a slimmer/broader shoulder option here and there.

As for modding, I haven't done full-body padding, but I've seen someone needlefelt a plus-size doll, and I needlefelted a "bottom surgery" type of mod for one of my dolls. You could probably do similar or sew some padding. It might be fiddly to get all the limbs and such, though.

    4. Argo Dolls has some "plus size" bodies in 1/4 and 1/3, which are a little better than Impldoll's, but not by that much. Hopeful Creation does some chunkier dolls, and I know I've seen some other smaller brands with more realistic bodies, but I can't recall off of the top of my head... In all cases they are "female" bodies though.

Edit: I remembered Of Butterflies & Things. Not currently available to buy anywhere, I don't think.

    5. Thanks all! Of course I have to be difficult about it :sweat Good to know that there are options for female bodies, though!

    6. It's been a long standing criticism in the hobby that non idealized bodies don't really exist. Though that's fairly true in the world of dolls in general. I think it only becomes more of an issue in this corner of doll collecting as we tend to shell our OCs in doll form and those OCs come in way more shapes and sizes than most dolls allow for.

Engineering a bjd with a slim (skinny or muscular) design is pretty straight forward. Engineering a doll with curves is much more challenging. How do you balance the resin to allow it to stand unaided? How to you not create too much bulk around the joints to allow decent movement? It's not impossible but it's more of a puzzle to create that and make it a harmonious in form and function.

A few doll makers have managed it, but I don't know how generally successful their sales were. If someone has a character doll whose thicker all around, or only has a large belly and hips, or carries their weight differently, than you'd almost need a small army of sculpts to really appease the market. And it is a bit of a niche as so very many collectors only want the idealized versions of the human form.

I do think it's a little nutty that we can pretty easily get all kinds of monsters, mythological half human creatures and animals but almost no truly plus sized humans.

I think if I was needing a specific plus size form for a character, I'd make a stuffed nylon bodysuit to go over a resin doll form. That way I'd get the function of the resin form but the specific plushness on the body exactly where I want it. (that would also make dressing way easier than dressing a thick piece of resin as it would squish into clothing properly) Or I'd go completely off topic with the body and make a poseable skeleton armature with an entirely cloth body.
